Oh good, more people focusing on the wrong things and who will eventually wonder why they're not losing weight. Have fun!
I don't understand how wanting to eliminate processed food from my diet is focusing on the wrong thing?
I will still get all the food elements, protein, carbs, sugar etc... Just from natural, unprocessed food. And I certainly won't be starving myself!0 -

It isn't necessarily focusing on the wrong things.
My weight loss is from a caloric deficit to be sure, but the caloric deficit I've achieved is from eating "clean". I eat vegetables, meat, some fruit, raw nuts, olive and coconut oil and that's pretty much it. I get the nutrients I need and I can pretty much eat all I want of those things and still be at a reasonable number of calories. (I am logging food though, so if my weight loss stalls, I can, for example cut back on the nuts to lower total intake as necessary.) Plus I feel amazing when I eat foods like that.
Is it the only way to lose weight? Of course not. But some of us enjoy it. And it works just fine. If you don't like it, don't do it.
Search the forums and take a look at the number of people confused because they're "eating clean" and yet not losing weight. If you're focused on a calorie deficit that's pretty much all you need for weight loss. Being healthy is a combination of nutrient intake and exercise. None of that has anything to do with "eating clean." That is a bunch of pseudoscientific garbage with zero basis in science.0 -
Unprocessed meat? Does that mean I have to slaughter my own chicken or just eat the chicken while it's still alive?
I buy my meat fresh from my butcher on the day I plan on eating it. I don't buy mass produced chicken etc. from supermarkets.
But that's what I'm saying... the butcher had to process it.0 -
Not if I buy organic meat. Which I do.
Well that sounds doable, but you do realize that your definition of "processed" would actually preclude meat, right?
I'm really not trying to derail this... but you have to process meat in order to make it edible.
Naw man. I hunt my meat alive and eat them on the spot.

I'm in...I'll start the rebound group "7 Day Binge" for after!
Can I just join the rebound group instead? That one sounds like way more fun.0 -

Because "processed" is a loaded term and once you go down that road you'll be encouraged by your fellow "clean eaters" to start cutting out entire food groups. I get eating fresh vegetables, fruits and meats. I get making sure your macros are sufficient and that you're getting sufficient micronutrients and fiber. What I don't get is even bothering with the terms "processed" or "clean." Cooking is processing, preparing olive oil is processing, baking bread is processing, pasteurizing milk is processing, etc. Focus on what matters and don't get drawn into the morass which is the clean eating/paleo movements.
First - I totally agree that "clean" and "processed" and "chemicals" are all terms that are subjective and that can be confusing. (or in the case of "chemicals" include everything...)
Personally - I've found by doing my version of clean eating (no grains, no dairy, no added sugar) that I'm sensitive to gluten. Eat it and my joints swell up and I'm in pain. My doctors previously told me it was just arthritis from old injuries and to take pain killers, but when I cut gluten from my diet I discovered that I don't need the pain killers and feel great. Eat gluten (like one beer) and the pain comes back for several days. Obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone, but had I not cut grains out of my diet for a few months I never would have found this out.
If you're not interested, if you have no issues like this - that's cool! I'm glad you don't have inflammation issues and food sensitivities. But once I know I have them, reading labels on packaged/prepared food can be a pain in the butt. It's easier to just cook "clean" foods for myself. If I buy raw ingredients (i.e. my grocery cart is filled with fresh produce, fresh/frozen meat and fish and raw nuts and coconut/olive oil) and cook them myself I know there's no gluten or whatever hidden in some ingredient. I still go out to eat but try to stick to things that I can identify - grilled fish and steamed veggies, for example.
I agree that 7 days is arbitrary - I eat this way permanently. It probably takes longer than 7 days to see a significant difference if you do have food sensitivities, but I'm all for encouraging people to eat fresh produce and meats and cook for themselves. And maybe doing it for a while makes people see it's less difficult that you'd think, or they discover some new recipes or add parts of it in to their permanent diet. I think any of that is beneficial.
Plus - not everyone's goal is weight loss. I'm very close to being happy with my weight and just wanting to keep feeling the best I can feel. Eating minimally processed foods is one of the things that makes me feel good, so that's what I do.0 -
I just went and looked at the rules, no chemicals. Looks like a 7 day fast to me.
But but but, all foods are made of chemicals.
I is confused.0 -

No one pooped on her idea. But not everyone can do it this way and perhaps someone new such as yourself read this thread first and thought that this is the only method that works. Then they discover they can't do it and develop negative feelings about weight loss in general, then give up.
To be objective, all sides and POV's should be considered relevant. And support is not always about a pat on the back for your efforts. Sometimes support is about providing people with more plausible alternatives.0 -

Unless your client is doing nothing but sleeping all day it still is a negative balance. BMR is what it would take for her body to function if she did absolutely nothing. I assume she's doing something throughout the day so she's still not eating at maintenance which would explain the loss...DAMN THAT SCIENCE.0 -

Her TDEE is probably 3000 calories a day which is why she is losing on 2500 - 2700 calories a day.
BMR is the minimum your body requires to perform automatic functions such as breathing and pumping blood. Any concious activity such as getting up and walking around puts the energy requirement above BMR.0 -

it's nothing personal directed at the OP.
it's the mindset and the incorrect logic behind the mindset that is the issue.
nobody really cares if you decide you only want to eat carrots and kale that you grow in your backyard. they do care that incorrect information and assumptions are posted and left without rebuttal. if somebody posted a diet challenge that forbade eating fruit and vegetables as "bad", they would also be rebutting that diet as unnecessary.
also, this is a public forum. if this was posted in a private group, you'd not have seen any responses dismissing it.
in the end, all i care about is accurate and complete information. if i see something that i know is wrong or unnecessary and i'm not so annoyed at the forum derp that day, i'll usually say something. information is power. if you're armed with all of the information you need to make a choice, then most of us don't begrudge you that choice no matter what it is.0 -

So what's your method? I'm assuming you're just talking counting calories/macros, but to me, that's the difficult way if I just eat whatever to get there. I can fit a donut or ice cream into my calories and macros every day, but if I eat that, it triggers me to crave junk food constantly. (my gluten issues aside on the donut). Then it's like torture to stay within my calorie counts/macros. On the other hand, I find it rare to go much over 1600 calories a day of meat/fish/veggies, even if I'm eating all I want.
So to me - eating clean is the easy way to stay withing the "science" parameters for weight loss.0 -
