7 day, 10 pounds?

Hi there!
I was doing math on my way back from vacation. According to my math, please correct me if I am wrong...
If I eat: 4500 calories per day or 31,500 per week. Minus 1500 calories per day (due to my BMR) times 7 would be 10,500. This would equal 6 pounds. Showing almost a pound a day of weight gain.
If I eat 4000 calories per day or 28,000 calories per week. Minus 1500 calories per day that would be 10,500 in a week. Showing a 5 pound gain.
If I ate 3000 calories per day 21,000 calories per week minus 10,500 calories per week that would mean a total of 3 pounds gained.
Is it really probable to gain 6 pounds in a week? I mean, wouldn't it be hard to eat over 4500 calories per day? I am just worried because I have been eating a lot that the weight will not come off. I just want to cry and eat then cry and repeat (while I am not doing this, i feel so upset).
Any suggestions?

You need to eat 3500 calories over your TDEE to gain 1lb, not your BMR. So it would in fact be more than that.
But in answer to your question, yes it is possible, if you can physically eat that much.
The rest of it I don't understand; are you saying you have gained this much?0 -
You're probably retaining fluid from traveling and eating high sodium foods.
And, if your intake was not "normal" then there's a chance your digestive system is not "normal" at the moment and that can cause a spike on the scale as well.
Give yourself a few days to get back in your routine and then weigh yourself again. Most, if not all, of that should be gone.0 -
I am sorry- that would be my TDEE my BMR is 1325, and I put my TDEE as higher! Excuse me, I was wrong I am saying that I gained about 7-10 pounds on vacation in one week.0

Weight can vary for a lot of reasons outside of calories too, like water weight.0

It takes 3500 calories of surplus over your TDEE, not your BMR, to gain a pound of fat. I don't think anyone can physically gain a more than a couple of pounds of fat in a week unless they are all out binging for 7 days. You can easily put on 5-10 pounds in water weight from changing up your diet, eating out more, excessive sodium, etc. but those pounds will come off fairly quickly as soon as you get back to your normal routine.
I gain 5 pounds every time I travel a week for work. I finally stopped weighing myself the day I got back. I wait until I've been back on my normal food and water intake for at about 3 days and I typically weigh what I did before I left or a little less.0 -
Thank you for your responses- I appreciate your time to get back. How much should I give myself before weighing in again? Should I do some kind of quick diet to lose the vacation weight?0

You did not gain that amount of fat in one week, unless you ate the amount of calories you mentioned, which I'd say is highly unlikely. It's going to be mostly water weight with maybe a tiny bit of fat.
If it's any consolation, I gained 10lb in 5 days when I came back from my holiday on the 1st July. It's now the 12th and I've lost that plus some.
Keep doing what you were doing and it will come off as quickly as it went on.0 -

oh yes EASY!!!!!!!!0 -
Sodium and Alcohol are not your friends. I know they are not mine. I gained like 6 lbs because I ate a lot of salt it took about a week to go down to my weight.0

Don't worry! I weighed myself one morning and I was 172lbs, weighed myself again (out of curiosity) that night after I ate/drank a bunch I was 180lbs!!! It just goes to show how much your weight can fluctuate!0

Great blog info! Thanks!0 -
Here's a trick I found on this site but can't remember from whom (Thank you whomever you are). Try drinking water today until it comes out completely clear. You'll likely end up sending out more than you drank and feel like you are going to the restroom every five minutes. When you weigh yourself in the morning you should be much happier.
The idea is that your body is hoarding water. When you give it as much or more than it needs, it's not so stingy and you stop being a camel.
I'm sure that someone will say that this is total nonsense. But it works for me, otherwise I wouldn't be passing it on.
Good Luck!0 -

I wouldn't, just get back into the routine and things should even back out.0 -
I wouldn't sweat it too much. A couple of months ago, I gained 3 pounds in 20 minutes. Impossible you say? Not at all.
I was treating myself after a long hard week of being really strict on the diet and exercise to a nice long soak in the jacuzzi at home. I stepped on the scales just before I got in. 169 pounds. I stepped out 20 minutes later. Nothing to eat or drink and completelyl dried off. 172 pounds. My skin had absorbed almost 3 pounds of water because it was so dry.
Water weight can screw you up every time. I'd wait at least a week after being back to a normal routine before weighing and worrying about it. Weigh before then if you want to but don't sweat it.0 -
I haven't read all of the responses yet, but I just wanted to let you know that it is possible. Years ago at Weight Watchers we were told the average person gains about 8 pounds during a 1 week vacation. I know I do, but I would say it's mostly from sodium from too much eating out and alcohol0
-
Thank you- I am HOPING that I only gained one pound.. however, I am feeling like this is so unlikely!0

Honestly it shouldn't really matter that much. Just get back with the program. If it's water weight it will resolve itself in time. If it's actual weight gain you'll lose it again. The only option is to get back to it.0
