hippies aka veggies and vegans always look sickly to me. Pale and are constantly having health issues. Plus they tend to grow this gland that randomly sprouts out to everyone they talk to that they are a veggie.

person a: man, my car broke down
veggie: that sucks. im e a vegetarian

person b: so my dog died
veggie: well thats said. i wouldnt eat him anyways cuase im a veggie

person a is sleeping very soundly
veggie: *tap tap* hey, im a vegetarian. nite nite

People who talk like that are NOOBS, fyi. I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years now, and you will not hear me bringing it up unless I am asked if I want some hamburgers.

As for sickly looking people, I would like to share with you some very healthy looking vegetarians:

Probably this. I chose beans as my primary protein intake, which also meant increased fiber. I had some other medical issues a few years ago and some doctors recommended taking out meat to try and solve it. Didn't work, just hurt like hell. I'm not a fan of pain.

I also think unless you are weight training (which you may very well be!) there isn't quite as much protein needed as we think. You may have overdone the beans!

I have some issues when I eat raw foods. I think it's mostly the sprouted beans make me feel all nasty. And some of the food is just too rich. The only way I managed to be a raw foodist was to stick to eating things like carrots and salad and avocadoes and not bother with any of the fancy schmancy stuff. If I tried fancy meals or desserts, I would just wanna vomit. And day of fruit and veggies and some nuts was alright though.

That's some sexy veggies right there!

And I too know veggies aren't sickly looking. They can be rather overweight. My little sister was veggie for a long time, and consistently about 50 lbs overweight. A corn an gluten allergy has been discovered, so she's gone back to some meats (just chicken and fish).

It's definitely not a solid weight loss plan. I agree with that!

I did a vegan diet for over a year and ovo-vegetarian for a few years after that. I slowly gained weight and now have some health problems that may or may not be from my years of alternating vegan or vegetarian diets.

I think they can be great, but you need to do them right. I eat a little poulty and greek yogurt and feel better. My mind is on board with veganism, but my body is not.

I should note that I am less hungry with a little protein. I think I was eating too many empty carbs. Again, I was not doing it right (should have been having tofu and tempeh, etc.).

All I can say is make Trader Joe's your best friend/ They have the best vegetarian options by far and they're cheaper than Whole Foods. Trader Joe's is the only place I know where you can find quality soy cheese and yogurt, along with vegan cookies that taste amazing! They have a variety of tofu options and even veggie chicken and beef strips, but I wouldn't recommend those unless you're really good at seasoning. My best friend has definitely become the veggie burgers. They have morning star burgers, bacon, and sausage for breakfast. There's also vegan icecream and a variety of other options to make vegetarian living a blast.

  • I have been vegetarian for years without any health problems, I didn't even think about what I could be loosing out on :) only now have I started eating healthy to lose weight ... still no health problems because of it. BUT I have heard of a lot of people with health problems. Ultimately no matter what your diet choice, you should always make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need.

I'm going on year 4 of no longer eating any flesh. This came from my doctor as I was having major digestive issues. I feel great and it was an awesome decision. No more bloating, stomach pains, digestive problems, I have clear skin and it had dramatically improved my quality of life. I was in chronic pain. Seriously. But that's me.

Anyways, I started with Alicia Silverstone's website called the kind life to give me an ideas as to where I should start. I still conssume eggs and goat cheese (rennet free) on a regular basis.

B12 is going to be the most difficult to find but as others have mentioned it's not impossible either. There's some great posts here, so you can learn a lot from the vegans/vegetarians here. I turned a lot to Indian food as it is super flavorful and usually fulfills macros. it's just a little longer to prepare but oh so yummy!

Everyone's different. It may or may nor help you. So give it and try for 30 days. That's what I did. And I never looked back
  • elvensnow
    elvensnow Posts: 154 Member
We also lack the ability to make our own B12 which only comes from meat. We're not designed for grains of any kind, our insulin profile suggests we should minimize fruits, we can handle vegetables but our food of choice is always meat. our systems are designed for high fat, high protein and low carbohydrate diets. Sorry to burst your bubble. but stick with the bacon.

B12 doesn't only come from meat. Nutritional yeast has a great deal of B12 for a small amount.

And sorry but I dont' agree with everything else you wrote. We are humans and have the ability to choose what we want to eat. We don't have to eat meat. We can get by and be perfectly healthy without meat or animal products.

OP, in addition to my post expect people will make comments like the one above where the only proper human diet is a meat eating diet.

I admittedly stopped reading here because I think most everything else will just be repeats.

But I just wanted to point out that he said we are designed for an omnivorous diet, which is without a doubt 100% factually true. As evidenced by our inability to make our own B12 etc etc. Sure, you can choose to eat vegan, that doesn't mean humans were meant for it or that it's good for you. The amount of supplements and careful nutrition you have to do in order not to, you know, die is evidence of that. (So be thankful you live in the age you do where you have those supplements and such available to prevent you from dying for arbitrary reasons)

If you want to eat vegan fine. But don't act like it's somehow the "right" way to eat. And if you want to feel morally superior for doing so, I guess that's your prerogative too. But as far as human biology is concerned, the right way to eat is to eat a balance of everything.

And to the OP: if you're going to do vegan I highly suggest getting some doctor/nutritionists advice. It's very easy for people to think they can just cut this stuff out and not suffer any consequences. I had a friend whose teeth all rotted and fell out because she was using vegan toothpaste. Little did she know that she had a fluoride deficiency, and fluoride being something in high quantities in normal toothpaste but not so much in vegan....

I went vegan for 3+ years because of those "movies" and I ended up feeling great at first and then got horribly ill because of lack of B12 (the ONLY source we can absorb easily is from meat/eggs) and I had an EXTREME deficiency of vitamin D.

I did some research and found out that these "movies" are backed by PETA. They will state whatever to get people to stop eating meat.

Here is a critique of the science behind the FOK movie by a vegan that uncovers the BS: http://rawfoodsos.com/2011/09/22/forks-over-knives-is-the-science-legit-a-review-and-critique/

After I changed my diet to Paleo, and my health has dramatically improved. I even was asked to do a blog post about it on a health blog:

So I watched the documentary "Vegucated" and I have decided to slowly cut meat out of my diet. I am almost a week in and I feel GREAT!!!! Is there anyone else out there decide to go vegetarian/vegan that can offer tips on going forward would be much appreciated.

I did not watch the documentary, and in the UK there has been a lot of press reports some months back about horse meat being passed in food labelled as beef etc.

There is also in the UK lots of press about animals with illnesses that have been slaughtered and now being put in school dinners etc. But the supermarkets will not accept this meat.

That all to one side. I have been a real advocate of eating meat and used to love it. Around 3 or 4 months ago I just lost my appetite for it (I was a big fan of bacon also) an I would never have imagined that I would stop eating meat, but I did.

Weight wise I have been in maintenance for around 8 months and nothing has changed.

Health wise my nails, hair and skin feel so much better.

I think it is a personal choice to eat meat or not. Personally, I do not think you will lose any more weight, but if you feel better (as I do) then enjoy your new lifestyle (I know I am)

the same is actually true of people who eat meat. Everyone should be mindful of proper nutrition and fitness. I agree it's a mistake to think vegetarian is an easy path to being healthy- not if you have celiac's or diabetes.
