Why can't I lose weight?

I'm really frustrated... I have been working out regularly the last couple of months (at least 4-6 hours a week) and I am eating about 1,400 calories a day. I have pretty much cut out soda and the fast food. I don't eat a whole lot junk food, other than a bit of dark chocolate and the occasional treat. Honestly, I've worked really hard to cut back on the crap food. I also do weight training now. I'm not losing ANY weight though. I haven't lost weight in over a year. I weighed 155 eating nothing but fast food, binging on diet coke like there was not tomorrow and doing zumba 6 times per week. Now, on average I weigh 168, work out almost as much, eat healthy food mostly at home and almost no soda. What is going on? Oh, and I got my blood checked earlier this year and there are no hormone issues holding me back from losing weight either.

You are either a) not accurately counting and measuring and weighing your food b) eating back your calories c) not getting the proper nutrition or d) not eating enough.
Use www.iifym.com specifically the IIFYM calculator to help you calculate your TDEE and then eat at a 20-25% deficit from that. Example TDEE is 2760 and I eat at 25% of that which is 2000 and some change for a 1.5lb/week loss.0 -
Thanks. I'll check it out.0

I agree with TDEE - 25%
I ate 1200 - 1400 cals when i first started and wound up plateauing after about 5 pounds lost. I eat 1700 ish per day now and lose consistently.0 -
If you are working out that much you probably are not eating enough. Your metabolism might be slowing down. Look at my diaries. Ive been eating a ton and have been losing 2-3lb a week. I do Zumba 2-3x a week (though I havent for the last week because Ive been sick) and weightlifting 3x a week.
(P.S... I am breastfeeding so that's why my calories are a little higher, but I only added 400cal to my TDEE - 20% to get my caloric number...)0 -

you can lose weight eating fast food, and diet coke has very few calories, so maybe your zumba was a better workout than you are doing now, so you lost weight?
maybe you need to have a look at your workouts - think quality not quantity, and make sure you are weighign and measuring everything you eat. plus, you should NET your calories goal (ie eat back exercise cals)0 -
I'm still working out just as hard... doing zumba and weights a couple of times a week. I am getting about 4-6 hours in a week. I'm just wondering if I need to up my calories? It's all so confusing. lol!0

Your first step should be using a food scale and being really really anal about controlling everything that goes in your mouth for 2-3 weeks, no cheat.
You might be eating more than you think.
If that is not the problem, I would see what upping your calories would do.
The main thing is to try just one thing at a time and for long enought to see if it work or not.
Lastly, take pictures every few weeks and also measurements, the scale does not tell the whole story.
Good luck0 -
Sometimes when you've been doing the same exercise routine for a prolonged period of time your body gets accustomed to it and your heart rate is not nearly as high as when you first started. You might want to consider trying a new type of cardio like taking a cycling class and switching up your weight lifting routine.
I agree with the calories possibly being too low, but I cannot see your dairy so wouldnt be abe to tell you for sure.
Do you use a heart rate monitor when you exercise, it can give you a better idea of your calories burned and the rate at which your body is working. The body can adapt fairy quickly. Your heart rate during Zumba might have been 160 when you first started but could now be 130-140 because your body has adjusted.
You also might also benefit from just taking a few days off. I don't however recommend going back to your previous diet of fast food and diet cokes. Sure you can still lose weight if you properly control your calorie deficit but 1. its unhealthy 2. if you're loading up all your calories from fast food you'll have to eat less throughout the day. I'd prefer eating a lot, from healthy foods, and not watsing the calories on a Big Mac.0 -
Yeah, I feel a lot better not eating like that! I should have mentioned, I am doing cycling now and trying to mix up my workout routine throughout the week by doing different classes every day. I only do body pump 2-3 times a week. I tried to make my diary public awhile ago, but it wouldn't let me. I think I will give the TDEE a try. It seems really high in calories to me, but 1,400 might be too low for what I am doing.0

1400 could definitely be too low, because if you burn say 600 calories on your workout days, you are only actually consuming 800 calories..thats not nearly enough. I think switching up your exercise classes is a great idea and if you don't already use a HRM, I suggest getting one, they can help. You may be underestimating your calories burned.0 -
Thanks! What hrm do you like to use? I know a lot of ladies who use Garmin.0
-
I did some research and decided to go with the Polar FT7 it had really great reviews. I also use the RunKeeper App on my phone when I go walking or hiking to track my distance, pace, & calories. I think the Garmin is great for outdoor activities and Polar is great for gym use, I am primarily in the gym0

I use a polar f6. It's great. Just enough features for me. You said you haven't lost weight, but do your clothes fit differently at all? Could your body composition be changing even though the scale stays the same?0

I have just taken a look at your dairy and there is not one single vegetable or fruit, salad etc. Your always high on your sugar intake and fat intake and you eat all processed foods, all junk food. It is not just about loosing weight it is also about making healthier food choices in order to keep the weight off. You need to make more of an effort.0

With all due respect I am not surprised that you don't lose weight, because your eating regimen is not very good. You seem to live of waffle fries, curly fries ( sometimes for two meals a day ), salmon patties " which I wonder if they are fried ) nacho chips, French Vanilla Coffee creamer, American cheese and chocolate chips. I went back two weeks and apart from skipped meals I could only find one occasion when you had any fruit or vegetable at all....that was half a cucumber under snacks. I am not saying you need to eat super clean, but in order to lose weight you need to eat better than that, especially healthful protein instead of empty carbs. You also need to be more conscious. You say you eat the occasional treat. As far as I could see you eat several treats a day almost every day. You do ok most of the time with your calories ( even though you don't eat as little as you say ) , but the quality of what you eat imo is really bad.0 -
I agree, some will say eat whatever you want if you are under your calorie goals, but in my professional opinion that is just not the case. You can still have the occasional snacks you enjoy, but the majority of your food intake should be from unprocessed foods meaning lean meats, seafood, lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains that are high in fiber. Try to find foods you enjoy and choose healthier options. Instead of fries how about a baked potato topped with chili. For lunch how about actual salmon with veggies and wild rice.
I've opened my diary for you. I still enjoy treats in moderation and try to eat well balanced. I still splurge on a starbucks, but I also eat a quinoa salad for lunch and make my own dinners. There has to be a balance and it will make a huge difference.0 -
Just so you know, the waffle fries are organic sweet potato fries... so it's not just empty calories. I admit, I was eating too much fast food for a while, and I actually eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I just wasn't putting them in my reports. I LOVE fruits and veggies. I'm definitely going to be cutting back on the chocolate and cut out any regular soda.0
-
Looking at your diary, I would say that you are not eating nearly enough protein and way too many carbs.0
-
1) Majority of your food is not food that you prepared at home. Calorie counts at restaurants are often inaccurate and inconsistent from place to place, particularly if it's not a large chain like McDonalds or something like that.
2) You have a lot of blank entries. Are you skipping meals or just not logging?
3) A lot of your entries seems wonky to me. What exactly is "0.5" of a grilled chicken club sandwich from Jack 'N the Box with no bun? Half of a piece of chicken? How do you measure 0.75 of Jack 'N the Box curly fries? How do you measure "0.8" or "0.6" of a salmon patty from Costco? How do you measure how many sweet potato fries you're eating? Inaccurate logging on a regular basis means you easily can be consuming more than you think.
If you're not losing weight, you are either underestimating your consumption, overestimating your exercise/output, or both. Given your diary, I'm going to guess your issue is mostly just underestimating your consumption.
You don't have to eat clean or perfectly healthy or anything like that, but really the majority of your diet seems to be soda, creamer, fries, Baker's nachos, and hershey's chocolate. Buy a food scale. Weigh all your food. Quit eating out so often. Be 100% honest with your diary.0 -

Thank you... I don't skip meals. Sometimes, I just use them in other categories since they already there, but I definitely eat at every meal. I am cutting back on the fast food and the soda and trying to eat mostly at home. I'll look into the food scales.0
