Starting is the hardest part. You are here now. Ping me a friend request if you would like some positive support :flowerforyou:0

Hi. I just want to offer my best wishes to you as you start your new path. Just some cautionary words:
1. You will encounter both positive AND negative people on here. You will have to learn to differentiate between the two.
2. Just because someone offers unhealthy advice with a friendly smile, DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Magic pills, fad diets, detox cleanses, and very low calorie diets DO NOT WORK. Don't let anyone try to convince you they do, because they don't.
3. Just becomes someone's "diet" or "exercise program" works for them, that doesn't mean it will work for YOU. You need to find what works for you, because everyone is different.
4. Don't throw out the "bully" or "rude" card, just because someone with more expertise and experience doesn't agree with your methods, or is telling you not to do "xyz". See #2 for further explanation.
5. Understand there are no quick fixes, and that exercise and eating right are the keys to success. You will NOT lose 15 lbs in one week, you probably won't even lose much weight to begin with. It took you a long time to put on the weight, prepare for a long time of working hard and eating right to lose the weight.
6. If you do wish to listen to the advice of people here, choose the ones who show significant weight loss by eating right and exercising. Ask them how THEY did it, because they know what they're doing, and they're worthy of the respect. NOTE: I do not wish to belittle those folks on MFP who have undergone GBS to help them lose weight, but this is the LAST option for many who have struggled to lose weight through other means. Listen to their stories, but take the advice of those who worked it off the hard way - because they have "walked the walk and talked the talk".
Good luck and get going - you can do this.

be kind to yourself. Best advice i can give you. You're worth taking care of.0

Hi, please feel free to add me as a friend also, I have only recently joined, I am about 3 weeks in and have managed to lose 6.8 pound. So far I love MFP and would like to have others to provide support to and to support me in my journey also!0

I, personally, have never struggled with my weight. It has been happily increasing, unchecked, for some time.
Two months ago I just decided to change that. I found MFP, began tracking, and the pounds have been steadily decreasing. It's like anything else: if you decide to do it, really do it, jump in with both feet and no regrets. Just make it happen. Tracking gets easy after a bit and since you're counting calories, not just eating "diet food" you don't have to feel cheated. It's all a big puzzle to find what you like, how to change your cooking in little ways, just to make the numbers add up.
I'm a breakfast fan. I love my bacon and eggs. Now an omelette has more veggies, less meat, no cheese. Minor adjustments all, but significant calorie reduction. And if I really want biscuits and gravy, lunch and/or dinner will be proportionally lighter that day. Or over the next couple of days. One occasional splurge need not be made up in one day. You're in it for the long haul.
You'll be just fine. If I can make this work, it can't be all that hard or annoying.
What he said!
There is so much help and advice available here, as well as humour and a few wackos (as with any online forum:bigsmile: ) You're not alone, but you also don't have to bore everyone around you with the "best low calorie snack I've found" and such like.
You can totally lose weight here. With MFP there's no need to set yourself unrealistic goals, or endure boring food or disagreeable exercise - that is what makes poeple give up on diet and fitness. This journey is totally doable, and it can open up whole new habits of eating and activity. If you'd told me six months ago I'd get up at 5.30 so I could do 45 minutes of Zumba before work (because it would be too hot later) I would have laughed at you or had you put away:noway: But that's what I did this morning. (yesterday I got up the same time and did 40 minutes of aerobics). In fact if you told me an exercise class would be my favourite hour of the week I would have edged away with a nervous smile:bigsmile:
Before this the most I'd ever aimed to lose was 14lb, and I'd generally stop around 10lb because I was bored and hungry.:ohwell: In 3lb I'll be on maintenance (unless my vacation is REALLY good:blushing:  ) but I'll still be here because I know "fat lazy me" is not going to go away that easily, she's still there saying "its too hot for a walk, have an ice cream instead". Feel free to add me for support for the long haul.:flowerforyou:0 -
Hi. Well done on joining. I've also struggled but I've found this quite a liberating and unshackled way to lose weight so keep focused and positive0
-
I've been a member for longer than I'd like to admit, I need a swift kick in the pants just about every day. Feel free to add me too!0
-
You mean when you lose then we become friends??? Ok, your pick, pistol, rifle, black powder. You should know.... I don't go easy on anyone...0
-
I sent a friend request too! I would love to have support too!0

Hi there! Feel free to add me! I'm on MFP every single day, and as long as you are committed and willing to put your back into losing weight without the fad crap, I will support you and cheer you on every step of the way. I tell it like it is - I figure that honesty is the only way to make this all happen. But you also need to be honest with yourself - it's important to log every single thing you eat, and not lie to yourself about how much and what you eat. If you do that, you are cheating nobody but yourself - which is stupid if you think about it!
I've managed to surround myself with a lot of the right kind of friends on here who, like me, will tell it like it is. They have been an integral part of helping me see where my weaknesses lie, what I'm doing wrong, and what I'm doing right. They have encouraged me, called me out, and been there when I had questions or felt weak. Without the support of the people that I have found on MFP; if I didn't feel accountable to them as well as myself, if I didn't feel like I would let them down if I gave up, well, then I may not be where I am today.
So anyway, add me if I'm the kind of friend that you want to surround yourself with on here... and don't if I'm not. Good luck either way! If I can do it, anyone can do it!0 -
Definitely know the feeling! ADDING YOU!0

:flowerforyou: don't feel depressed and don't beat yourself up over it.If you do bad one day just pull up ur socks and start over the next day.thats what I learned in weight watches and you got to stick to a plan to make it work after all we didn't gain the weight overnight.Me I had bad car accident in 2001 and couldn't walk for one year ,lost my job,ate for comfort and gained 70 pounds in one year, then than god in 2003 I walked again and in January 2007 I decided I had enough of being overweight and joined weight watchers in june 2008 I lost the 70 pounds I had gained, and started gaining weight again in 2011 and put on 50 pounds again.but I started program and I know I can do it and I know you can do it too,,never give up I don't,it will happen for you oneday0

I have been on my journey for six weeks...began june 4th. I have lost 15lbs.I have a family and surrounded by people that have no issues with weight problems, so I joined here a few days ago. I find that eliminating most grains I lose weight better. And exercise all the time, of course. I am NOT hard on myself when I eat a food I shouldnt....I just do better next meal. I too need friends that I can share this journey with....the good and bad!0

Wait, I just re-read this! I'm now a little scared lol.
There's nothing to fear but fear itself.
And those giant spiders that live under your bed. Oh, and meteors, too. They come out of nowhere. Although they do occasionally kill a spider, so maybe they're not so bad. Not always.0 -

I think we all forget that the weight gain is just as hard as the weight loss but for totally different and negative reasons. We see weight loss as a great achievement and see the loss quickly more in the way we feel and the confidence, yet weight gain is gradual and detrimental to most. We have two choices here, loss or gain and most of the time it is a seesaw. 6 months will go by regardless of your choice, time to make it a loss for 6 months and see how you feel then xxx0

I have had this app for awhile, but just started actually using it. Thought that it might help me better track some calories and encourage my weight loss some more. It looks like you all are beginning to have allot of success with this app? Don't really have to many friends on here to share progress with. My only friend on here is my wife and her friend HAHAHA! Anyways, I am in the same boat as you thought you may want to trade some tips. I have lost 42 lbs. since January almost 20 lbs. in the last 30 days! Exercise and Diet combined. I really just want MFP to keep me more disciplined.0
-
That is so sad she left us. I wonder why. I wanted to help too.0

Yeah, i's depressing to be stuck 20# away from my goal so I share your angst. You're welcome to drop me a note any time if you want free advice or a shoulder to punch. Keep at it, we'll both break through.0

Hello & Welcome!
I see this post was made in July, so I hope things are still going well for you! I was one of those people who constantly dieted and always gained the weight back, and for some reason it worked this time, I lost 137lbs and have maintained that for 8 and a half months now.
So if you ever want to chat, feel free to send me a message .
Lots of love,
Gemma xx0 -

Does no one read what anyone before said? She has deactivated! :laugh:0 -
Aw I've been at that point and didn't know what to do bc I kept failing. Try something new. Going keto for about a month helped me knock those first 10 pounds. Just keep telling yourself as you're losing that you will not reach that starting # again.0
