my first 70 lbs lost were at home workouts only... and mostly on the Elliptical. I did 30 min every day on it and sometimes 20 min in the evening to if i was going to have a high calorie day. Also would do a les miles combat every now and then. just started going to the gym 6 weeks ago but that is for heavy lifting... i still do all cardio at home. anyone feel free to add me if you are active on MFP0

So far I've lost almost 30 pounds since April by working out at home and I plan to do at home workouts for probably the next 6-9 months of my journey. Currently I'm doing Turbo Jam and I plan to later do Chalene Extreme,Turbo Fire and C25K in the future. The hardest part about at home workouts for me is to motivate myself not to stop (I'm still working on it). I'm satisfied with workout at home but I do plan to join a gym in order to do some heavy lifting.0

I've lost nearly sixty pounds, just stepping out my door and hiking. However it was my food choices that are responsible for my success.1

I only workout at home.
I've done so many different things from Walk At Home DVD's, Wii games to Insanity and Brazil Butt Lift0 -
I've ditched about 36-ish pounds since January and haven't set foot in a gym. I run, swim and lift weights...got to enjoying that so much, my hubby hooked me up with an Oly bar and plates. I also tried 30DS (did NOT like it, but got through the first two levels, which was when I discovered lifting).0

I only workout at home and have hundreds of dvd's and I have lost weight . I also have an elliptical and an "urban rebounder" (trampoline). I have such a wide variety of cardio and strength training dvds , that I never get bored.
Yes you can lose weight and stay fit by working out at home !
I buy most of my workout dvd's at collagevideo.com ... GREAT customer service and you can preview a clip of the workout on their website before you purchase it. They have so many varieties of workouts ! You can also call their customer service number and talk to someone who can help you pick a workout based on what you are looking for... . They're very knowledgeable on their products. Hope this helps you .0 -
Yes, though I did not have a lot to lose. Wii My Fitness Coach and now doing Insanity. Also play soccer in the fall and tennis mid-June to mid-August, bith 1x per week. QWe just got an elliptical and will use it once I am done with Insanity.0

I stick to at-home workouts only. I started with elliptical only, then added in some body-weight exercises (push-ups, pull-ups), and eventually moved onto some workout DVD programs (Insanity, Body Beast) and running with C25k. As you can see, I have exercise ADD, but that's besides the point...There are plenty of options out there and as long as you stick with it and watch your nutrition, you can definitely get results.0

I haven't stepped inside a gym since January 2012. I have lost 70lbs.1

I go to the gym now, but I lost my first 70 lbs doing home workouts and using MFP. :flowerforyou:0

This time round I am doing a home exercise routine, so that I can do a low inpact and lower intensity cardio workout, without getting well-intentioned feedback to take it up a notch and go for the burn--which DOES NOT WORK FOR ME.
I am rebounding w free-weights and a floor routine that combines ballet, pilates, yoga, and various toning exercises. Some use a weighted ball or elastic band. In addition to weight loss, I have lost 20+inches.
I still need more work on my lats and obliques, so purchased a book, "Strength Training for Women" by Joan Pagano. It is not a 6-pack approach. Still some exercises suggest gym equipment.
My hair stylist's brother is a personal trainer, I am contemplating paying for a few hours of consultation. Then checking back in with him every 2 months or so.0 -
The majority of my exercise consists of running, walking, bike riding, and yoga. All done in the comfort of my own neighborhood/home. 52 lbs down as of today, in 6 months.0

Weight loss happens in the kitchen. Fitness happens by working out. You don't have to do anything to lose weight except maintain a deficit.
Agreed! As long as you are eating at a deficit, you will lose weight. If you'd like to maintain lean body mass and get stronger while you eat at a deficit to lose, then by all means you can do that at home vs. a gym. The bonus is that you get to eat more calories when you exercise to fuel your workouts.
My focus is fitness, fat loss, and strength training. Although it's nice to see the number go down on the scale, it's even more exciting (for me, at least) to go down a pants size. I've only lost a pound since November but have lost almost two pants sizes in that time. No one else sees my number on the scale, but they sure do notice when I have to buy smaller clothes!
To answer your question, though: I do not belong to gym and although sometimes I think about it, I just can't justify the expense. So yes, I've had great success getting smaller and stronger by just working out at home.
I've gotten all the way through one DVD program (ChaLean Extreme), and have dabbled in others - Turbo Jam, Turbo Fire, 10 Minute Trainer (at the beginning), and several Jillian Michaels programs. I get bored doing the same workouts over and over, so I've started blazing my own trail.
Fitness Blender is, indeed, brilliant. I can't wait to do their new HIIT workout that just came out today. It's easy to put together their workouts to get what you want. I like that I can cobble together about an hour's worth of workouts and incoroporate the elements I want for that day - bodyweight, weights, HIIT, Pilates, stretching, etc. I enjoy shorter, more intense workouts with a short rest in between.
I also run outdoors a couple of times a week.
You Are Your Own Gym has a lot of bodyweight workouts, and you can always check out come of the Crossfit- type WODs that you can do at home, or in a regular park.
I've slowly built my own "home gym" over time as I find new things I want to try. I have adjustable dumbbells that go up to 25 lbs, resistance bands, a physioball, and a yoga mat. I'm in the market for a pull up bar, a speed rope, and a medicine ball.0 -
With the exception of a few months of using the gym in my apartment complex, I have been an at home exerciser for 20 years. I have nothing personal against gyms, but it's about convenience. I have no desire to commute to a workout.
With that being said, I pretty much slacked off completely for the past year and a half and got really out of shape for the first time in my life. I went from having 15 vanity pounds to lose in 2011 to being 40 pounds away from my ideal weight. I got back on the wagon toward the end of April and have lost almost two sizes so far. I do Turbo Fire or Turbo Jam for cardio six days per week. I also do resistance work 6 days per week alternating upper and lower body using DVDs I've accumulated over the years. It works and always has, so I don't overthink it.0 -
I have access to one of the BEST gyms anywhere, for free - the Navy gym at the base 2 mins from my house - and yet, I workout at home 99% of the time.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Navy gym, but the hours (especially now with the effing "sequester") suck with my crazy schedule, so I have invested in my own home gym, a pair or two of good shoes, and some fun apps on my phone. All for a LOT less than a yearly membership to a commercial gym.
Bodyweight exercise (along with my Strong Lifts) has become my new favorite thing....because it's HARD. Try it....
Some of my apps:
Strong Lifts (have to have equipment for this one)
Pocket Yoga
5K runner (a different version of C25K)
Ab Trainer X
Kettlebell Shred Workouts
iCross WOD (Crossfit workouts...)
SEAL challenge (I love this one!!! I get to pretend to be a SEAL-in-training, and fail miserably at it!!!!)
RunKeeper
YAYOG (You Are Your Own Gym!)0 -
I've not set foot in a gym nor stepped outside to run on my weight loss journey so far. Can't afford the gym and I dislike running.
I lost the first 40-odd pounds through diet alone anyhow.
all my exercise has been through dvds, it suits me and I like it. I know it doesn't suit everyone, but I seem to prefer building an imaginary relationship with a DVD presenter!!
My dvds are the usual suspects: jillian michaels, insanity, tae bo. They work; I guess the only issue is sometimes it takes a while to find dvds you like.1 -
I haven't stepped foot in a gym in over 20 years.
I do push-ups, tricep-pushups, squats, and reverse crunches. I also have a variety of household items that I have weighed in order to practice lifting until I can afford to buy equipment.0 -
I usually do workouts at home, gym is too expensive. Walking around the neighborhood for 30-60 minutes in the evening, yoga, other workout videos. You can find a lot online and on fitness websites. It just depends what you are into. Like dancing? Put on some good tunes and dance around your house for half an hour You'd be surprised how many calories you can burn doing simple stuff like that!0
-
Does anyone just strictly do just different types of home workouts only and if so have you seen a successful weight loss?
yes
Please google ZGYM ZuzanaLight.com0 -
I lost 40 pounds about 6 years ago with only a stationary recumbent bike in my basement & a few different exercise videos. I've expanded my equipment selection a bit since then, but other than a 7 lb. gain, I've maintained my loss all these years without stepping foot in a gym.
I too have lost all my weight counting calories and riding the stationary bike (15-30 minutes almost every day). I also work out through silly dance parties with my young son, walking and shooting baskets at the park (though that has stopped due to the summer heat). I just recently started trying some aerobic DVDs, but I have two left feet and can't imagine attempting aerobics classes!0 -
I only work out at home. Down 20lbs. Use mainly the FitnessBlender workouts plus some neighborhood walking.0
-
No, you need to have a commercial gym membership to lose weight0
-
I did before I started lifting weights. I still work out at home two days per week. At home, I train with kettlebells, do bodyweight workouts, and go out for walks. You can certainly get an excellent workout done from home.0
-
Absolutely! I only recently got a gym membership to keep my husband and son moving.0
-
Love Turbofire but have been doing Slim in 6 for the last few months and am getting very toned and tight.0
-
At home only:
treadmill
zumba
hip hop abs
tae bo
resistance bands0 -
Me! Weights only at home calorie deficit.0
-
Lost all my weight through home workouts: Jillian Michaels, Turbo Fire, Fitness Blender, cheap dumbbells.0
-
Yep I've lost 19lbs so far with mfp and working out at home. I have a treadmill, use Jillian michaels dvds and the you are your own gym app. Going to a regular gym is not an option for me right now.0
