Hi everyone, I've been doing MFP for over a year and I can't believe I've only just realised there are message boards on here. Usually I just use the App on my phone. Anyway I thought I'd pop on and say hello.

My name is Katie and I'm 30. Over a year ago my friend posted a picture of me on facebook and I barely recognised myself, that week I went out and bought a set of scales (and cried) I was at the highest weight I have ever been at 257lb. I've since lost 90lb but I keep yoyoing at this weight and cant seem to break through the invisible barrier. I've tried varying the way I eat and added more exercise but nothing seems to make the scales budge. I have about 18lb til I reach my first main goal and then possibly another 10 after that depending on how I feel/look. Frustrating being so close yet so far!

I hope everyone is well

Hi Jez, you've done great! I too see this as a lifestyle change. I dread to think where I could have ended up if I had carried on the way I was. I feel so great right now, energy and fitness levels are through the roof compared to where I used to be. Just that extra little push now

Hi... My name is Daryl.... Just wanted to introduce myself... and also ask a question....

I have been on the shakes and bars before... but kind of dropped off due to a busy lifestyle and laziness... ;-)

I am determined this time as I am now as I am nearly 50... have young kids... and want to be leaner and fitter...

I am a paramedic so I see a lot of what carrying a lot of weight can do

I am also a former competitive body builder that ate A LOT... but since then I have had trouble with over eating.

So... here I go... I have been on the VLCD for 4 days... 3kg's lost... but that will slow down a bit as I go along.

    I started at 107 and now 104...

My question is.... if this is supposed to be a low carb program.... why when I stick to the shakes, bars and soups.... does my pie on MFP say that over half is carbs ??

    Cheers

    Daryl

Depending on how many calories you have been eating, you may need to "up" your calories. You could have hit a plateau.

Are you lifting weights? If so, that could contribute to no weight loss on the scales, but you will be losing inches. IF you aren't weight lifting, then I suggest you start!

MFP macros can be adjusted to suit your personal preferences. I have mine set to 40/30/30 carbs/protein/fat, but plenty of people set it up for low carb (I like my carbs, personally). The default is set to about 50% carbs, as I recall. You can change it fairly easily.
My Home -> Goals -> Change Goals

As for the shakes and bars, a lot of them are fairly high in carbs and may not be a great option if you're trying to go low-carb. I'm not low-carb myself, so I don't have great alternatives for you unfortunately, but there is a lot of information in the forums.

Hi Katie. Wow you're doing so well! I so get what you mean about recognising yourself in photos (or not) - isn't it great to finally look at them and see the chick you know you are :)

Hi Katie, firstly well done, that is an incredible journey you have been on. With me also a photo was my turning point, seeing myself in a few at a wedding, I looked so overweight and felt so uncomfortable and self-conscious but it was the wake up call I needed. I joined in April and have lost 9.9kg..22lbs with a further 12kgs to go. I see this as a life style change as I have done the shakes and put that weight back on, but MFP makes me accountable and I can still eat my favorites. The support here and my MFP friends are encouraging and supportive, I'm glad my friend introduced me to MFP.

After calculating my BMR it says I should be eating an extra 350 calories a day. I don't lift weights, I wouldn't even know where to start. I might be able to look at joining a gym in january but what about until then? If I got a couple of small dumbbells at home would that be a good idea?
  • Hello All,
I'm new here and to the getting 20 lbs off. I'm 38 female, 5'4 155lbs. I'd like to be 137lbs. I am changing my eating habits and portion size. I have started walking 1.7 miles 5 days a week. Is walking 5 days a week enough to reach my goal or should I include other exercise? Thanks Nicole :)
