Walking around the office barefoot
I work in a medium size "corporate" office. In the summer months there seems to be an epidemic of people walking around the office without shoes. Not only around the office, but also to the bathroom and back. I can't stand it !! I hate feet. I have gone to my supservisor but she is one of the offending people.
What would you do? Am I overreacting? Do people in your office do the same thing?

I think that is disgusting. I work in an office where a lady does this as well. It is beyond unprofessional!0

People in my office, myself included, do it all the time. But our office is tiny and only has 4 people in it. And to the bathroom? EEEWWWW! No, shoes go on for that.0
-
Gross and unprofessional IMHO belhhhhh0

I slip my shoes off under the desk, my feet tend to swell when I walk to work in the heat. I always put them back on before I go walking around though.0

Hey, I have a rep to maintain here! I'm originally from West Virginia!
But to go into a public restroom? Ewwwwww, that is beyond nasty.0 -
I sit at my desk with my shoes off but as soon as i stand up the shoes go on!! U never know what kind of germs on lurking on the floor!!0
-
It's unprofessional. I can see doing it if it's a small, laid-back company. Or, your the old guy from Mad Man who makes you take off your shoes in his office.0
-
I've done it... guilty. Mind you, I have a pair of slippers now under my desk so I can put them on whenever I get up and go anywhere other then to the printer (20 feet away).0

This IS strange. It becomes Not Okay, if everyone is not okay with it.0
-
To the lady who posted that she only does it at her desk. I can see that. But the GERMS! No telling what has been dragged in.0
-
They're feet... 99.99% of humans are born with two of them.
Get over it.0 -
Luckily it is against the rules at my office to be barefoot.0
-
GROSS!. Take an extra pair of flip flops to work.0
-
People in my office do it, too!! Several of them...and yes, to the bathroom, too!! I guess they don't realize what is on the bottoms of shoes when we walk outside then inside. The nasty-ness that is probably in the carpets...I NEVER walk barefoot!!! Ugh...the bathroom is what gets me the most, though. Seriously...put shoes on for that, if nothing else!!!0
-
no... just no. I don't like feet... that's why I disguise mine with fancy shoes all the time, lol0
-
I ususally take mine off at my desk, and work around my cubicle with them off, I put them on if someone comes to my desk or I need to get up0

In my opinion, you are not overreacting. It is not only kind of gross but could result in some owies! What if someone stepped on a staple or someone wearing shoes stepped on a toe? Plus if you have that cheap carpet they have in offices it's going to smell like stinky feet really quickly. I remember having to vacuum that kind of carpet at my old job and it just held onto that smell like you wouldn't believe! Plus it doesn't seem like a professional environment if people are walking around barefoot. I mean, unless it's normal in your job, which it doesn't sound like.0

When did it every become OKAY to be unprofessional?! This is work. Put on your shoes and be a grownup. It is not your home.0
-
Wait until its people walking around the office with no pants....0
-
That's really weird.
I take off my shoes at my desk because I sit on my feet while I work (gives me a better angle to see the screen), but I work in a back corner and would NEVER walk around without shoes.0 -
Here in AUstralia it would be against Occupational Safety & Health rules - besides being unprofessional!0
-
Ill take my shoes off at my desk but if I have to get up... they go on...0
-
I take off my shoes too... but usually only at my desk. I don't go walking around without any shoes... and I wouldn't take them off if we were allowed to wear flipflops... or even tennis shoes...0

In my office, as all USPS offices, the rule was leather shoes only, no sandals, flip flops or canvas shoes allowed, and never barefoot. Safety rules.0

its unprofessional here (america) because we have culturally decided and agreed upon the unprofessionalness of it. so keep your shoes ON in an american office, please.
in other countries they take their shoes off whenever they go into a building, so they don't care. in places like that it's considered gross to keep your shoes on. 'over there' they don't get grossed out by feet--they are accepted as a part of life.
i do as the romans do but i often wish i didn't live in rome. often elsewhere there are better attitudes about things...0 -

Meh... it probably shouldn't bother you so much. It's just feet. It's not like they're walking around naked. Keep your shoes on if it bothers you and ignore it.
I used to work with a woman who would get all bent out of shape because she couldn't stand that this one girl sat with her legs, up in her chair, crossed. She made a HUGE fuss about it even though it really didn't effect her at all... in the end the girl was told to sit with her feet on the floor and the other woman was happy but everyone just thought the other woman was an insufferable nag.0 -
I'll give you that it's gross and borederline unprofessional (depending on company environment) but I honestly don't understand why it's a reason to complain to management. Seems like that's the norm and generally accepted. Every office has it's own vibe.
We happen to be very casual here and can wear jeans and shorts and even flip flops and hats on certain days as long as there aren't any clients visiting. I've even seen people wearing crocs! On the other hand, others still dress very professionally year round. As far as I'm concerned, if you're getting your work done and all your vital bits are covered, I could care less what you're wearing.0 -

High 5 West Virginia!
I don't wear shoes most of the day, but I work from my house and often from on top of my bed (like right now!). I don't like getting my shoes on the furniture so I just don't wear them most of the day. Or out to my mailbox, even though I stepped on a bee once and I'm mildly allergic and my foot swelled up huge. You think I'd learn...
But public areas, especially bathrooms, ALWAYS shoes. Not even flip flops: if I'm wearing sandals they have to push me a good inch off the floor with thick soles.0 -
Someone at my university takes his shoes off and walks around during lectures. I find it strange especially seeing as he only ever ears flip flops anyway!0
