Walking around the office barefoot

Eh, it doesn't bother me, unless the person has bad foot odor.
A friend of mine at work does this though, and she will sit cross-legged in her seat, or slouch in her seat while on her phone....then complains that no one takes her seriously. Myself and a few others have told her that if she wants to be taken seriously and advance in her career, then she needs to be more professional, not a college student.
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
That's funny to be so put off by how someone sits in their seat LOL. Maybe if a client comes in its nice to be in a good posture to face them attentively but otherwise unless you ruin the furniture who cares?
I ask because I sit all sorts of ways at work and NOBODY sees me...... I've never gotten commented on that and my professionalism is still there.0 -

- so, what she wears (or not) is a clear indicator of what she has inside herself to advance in her career? :noway:
it shouldn't matter.
Unfortunately in Corporate America it is. If someone is looking to climb the ladder then they had better be dressing and playing the part. If they're not then they won't be considered "corporate" material. It's all about politics.
Understood. I don't think I want what's at the top of the ladder so I'll just bumble around at the bottom in my bare feet - suits me and I think I will be healthier and happier for it!
edit: Just an afterthought - when you actually get to the top of the ladder and get your own office, I guess you can kick off your shoes and go barefoot then? Managers, eh!0 -
That would be nice...having my own office to do what I want. I work for the government and all my levels of management are very professional, even on "jean day" they wear business. Where I work, we never know if we will be called in to brief a General or an SES(civilian at a General Officer level).
In fact I am preparing to brief a General next week about disposing $10M worth of equipment. yay..0 -
They're feet... 99.99% of humans are born with two of them.
Get over it.
THIS
BTW Female feet are BEAUTIFUL
+1
Why do you care so much about other people's feet??? Germs are EVERYWHERE.
Well since you quoted me, please elaborate on how you arrived at that conclusion. I merely agreed with a statement posted by someone else. The women I know look after their feet and they look great. At no point did I endorse splashing around in a stranger's urine.
Clearly many of you have severe footphobia
I was agreeing with you...sorry I wasn't clear that was directed to the OP! :flowerforyou:0 -
When did it every become OKAY to be unprofessional?! This is work. Put on your shoes and be a grownup. It is not your home.

I hate shoes and will go barefoot whenever and wherever I can get away with it. Feet are no more gross than hands. Do you think feet are gross when you're at the beach or the pool? They don't change physiologically when they're anywhere else. It's funny what the mind can do-- create issues where there really aren't any. You poor people.0
-
I hate the high heeled clomping that I hear nfrom the women in my office everyday. Its like the Budweiser team of Clydsdales.
However, this is worse!0 -
I work in a medium size "corporate" office. In the summer months there seems to be an epidemic of people walking around the office without shoes. Not only around the office, but also to the bathroom and back. I can't stand it !! I hate feet. I have gone to my supservisor but she is one of the offending people.
What would you do? Am I overreacting? Do people in your office do the same thing?
Well not even OSHA regulates footwear in the workplace unless it relates to safety.

It would pretty much be up to the organization that you work for. Are there any local policies on this as far as a dress code in an employee handbook or something?0 -
I slip my shoes off under the desk, my feet tend to swell when I walk to work in the heat. I always put them back on before I go walking around though.
Same here too.0 -
Not for walking around but if your feet hurt from your shoes then just take them off when you're seated and wear them back on when you get up. Someone with a fungal infection could be walking around the office and someone else might get it. http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/guide/fungal-infections-skin0

I work for the Commonwealth of PA and during my first job with them I was written up because one day my feet were swelling so I took off my shoes and got up and walked to the file cabinets to get a file. Now 13 years later I work in a department where everyone walks around in stocking feet all the time and while it doesn't bother me (and we do not work with the public), I can't get over that first experience so I keep my shoes on.0

Personally, I find nothing gross about feet. But whether it is appropriate or not to go barefoot depends entirely upon the environment.
An office where one has a business dress code, bare feet are probably a bad idea unless it's just at your desk. In a more laid back environment, it could be no problem. I've worked in both types of places.
Where I am now, the female staff will go around barefoot if there are no customers in the place, but definitely not up to the warehouse or lumber yard. But it's not uncommon to have customers come in barefoot.
~edited to add~ I don't really like wearing shoes, so mine are off at any opportunity.0 -
It's unprofessional, but it's not gross. They're feet, they evolved to walk on dirt long before humans had enough intelligence to make and wear shoes. The concern about bacteria is overblown.0
-
Thank goodness I work from home, I dont wear shoes. Heck, half the time I dont wear clothes LOL0
-
definately a no no the only places you should walk barefoot are in your own place or on the sand0

You can't teach class, it's either you have it or you don't. Some people are retarded. I would step on there feet with my shoes to teach them a lesson.
Pot, meet kettle.0 -

My husband's boss told him that, once. My husband's response?
"Does that mean I can come in wearing a robe and carrying a lightsaber?"0 -
Disgusting!
I wear my stilettos all day.0 -
I only ever when I was on night shift would slip my shoes off UNDER my desk but as soon as I got up I would put them back on. It's gross & an occ health & safety hazard. What if you step on something, stub your toe, have something dropped on etc. etc.0
-
That is kinda gross. I have flip flops in my office so when my feet are screaming from my tall heels, I can switch to flip flops to give them a rest.0

Doesn't mean I have to like them.
I don't even like looking/touching my OWN feet. *shudders*
Why?
Serious question. Hell, anyone who doesn't like feet, please feel free to answer, because I honestly don't understand what makes them inherently "gross," especially any more than things like shoes. Assuming a reasonable amount of hygiene and care, here, what, exactly, is it that make feet so terrible?0 -
I walk around barefoot! Not to the toilet though, and ours is a small office. Plus we have carpet0
-
This is a workers comp liability. Hope the company doesn't mind their insurance premiums going up
What's the difference between walking around in socks or what have you to go to the printer or talk to someone at their desk and walking around in open toed shoes?
stepping on something sharp
What? Never have a nail go through your shoe before? For that matter, ever see what passes for "professional footwear" these days? About an eighth of an inch of foam or cork. Some good that will do against a tack or staple that's longer than that.0 -
It just boggles my mind at all the uneducated, unfounded, untrue statements. With the exception of a personal viewpoint on weather feet are ugly or not... Most of these nasty, safety, gross, dangerous, etc... statements being made are just societal stereotypes that have been pounded into our brains over time.
Bare feet used to be socially acceptable and nobody would bat an eye to see it.
1. Stinky feet... Are a byproduct of bacteria which grow and thrive in dark moist places. (Shoes!) Anyone who is barefoot much of the time can attest to the fact that bare feet do not stink unless encased in sweaty socks and shoes.
2. Unprofessional... This one is merely an environment, and dress code issue. (which were probably created because of uptight individuals and their unfounded fears) If I work in a place that does not deal with the public then who cares?
3. Dangerous, safety issue... Oh please! This is the most non issue one. If you work in an environment where protection is needed then ok, (think factory floor) but I can guarantee most people (especially office people) are in no more danger of injuring their bare feet as they are of injuring their bare hands. I mean you people make it sound like you're walking through mine fields of broken glass and rusty nails. (What the hell kind of offices are you working in?)
4. Health code... Only if you are serving food, but then there are rules for your hair, face, hands (hygiene in general) in that situation too. As for most other places of work... There is no health code referencing bare feet. In fact there are practically no laws on the books restricting bare feet in general. Not one state in the U.S. has a driving barefoot restriction law. (Hell it's far more dangerous to drive with flip flops than bare foot!) Most rules concerning bare feet are implemented at the company / business level, not the government level. (personal / company rules... Not laws!)
5. Gross, nasty, etc... (especially in regards to bathrooms.) Unless you have an open cut on your foot, you are no more likely to contract anything from walking on a bathroom floor than anywhere else. We have this really cool thing around our bodies called skin and it keeps out a lot of stuff. You are far more likely to contract something from exposed hands in a bathroom than from your feet. Plus... My feet don't have tread and grooves and cavities for all that nasty bacteria you are so scared of to cling to and catch a ride on like your shoes do. You people with shoes are tracking things far greater distances than us bare foot people. I also shower and clean myself (including my feet) daily. How often to you clean the bottom of your shoes?
6. Feet are ugly... That's your opinion, and what's more feet that are squeezed into sweaty, pinching, confining, bacteria ridden little coffins every day tend to be much uglier than the ones that are out getting tanned and beautiful in the fresh air.
And finally let me say that so many people are missing out. Going barefoot is one of the best feeling in the world. Go for a barefoot hike some day the textures and sensations are incredible. Think about walking around every day all day with gloves on. All the tactile sensations you would be missing out on. I don't think too many people would enjoy doing that and would take those gloves off the first chance they got. Well that's how I feel about shoes. Put them on when you need to or have to, but as soon as it's possible... Kick them off and feel the world around you!
Thank you for your time. :-)

I'm a bit guilty of this I started working in an office about 9 months ago and within a week I was spending my days barefoot.
I actually find it quite nice not having shoes on, just got to remember to try not to wear flats to work as each time iv taken them off my feet have majorley stunk and some colleague's were making fun of me. Only bad thing about going barefoot is your feet get dirty quite quickly and I always found if I didn't have a shower for two days and went in work and took my shoes off my feet would be horrendously mucky from the previous two days.
Oh and also remember that some men have foot fetishes and you could find yourself in a situation similar to me where some guy at my work was taking photos and videos of me at work barefoot. I told my bf and he said we should find him on facebook and we evebtually tracked him down and he luckily for us wasn't set to private and saw an album titled.."the work days" and there was loads of pics of me sitting in my chair and one of me where I was kneeling going through paperwork and zoomed in on my feet...among others it was pretty disturbing and we got him sacked lol.
So remember girls if you do shed the shoes, make sure some weirdo isn't recording you lol0 -
It's not something I would do. I don't know how often my office cleans the carpet. I do take off my shoes once in a while only when I'm in my cubicle, though.0
