What is 2 oz?

I made some rice noodles and the package says 2 oz is 46 carbs. 2 oz by volume is 1/4 cup...that's not going to fill me up. 2 oz by weight is about 1/2 cup.....still didn't fill me up. Most other carbs, rice and noodles, are 42-48 carbs for a cup, so I got another 1/2 cup of rice noodles...not sure what to put in my diary though.

    It is 2 oz. by weight. Pasta servings are MUCH smaller than most people realize. It's a hard lesson to learn!

  • Hmmm....yeah it is. I just looked on the back of another box (mac and cheese) and a cup is 49 carbs....my guess is the 2 oz by weight is as packaged, before cooked.

    I measured it afterward, once it had the water in it, so that cup was probably about right. Thanks for the help.

    So...this has been confusing to me also. If it says 2 oz dry...do I measure 2 ounces of dry pasta and cook it to equal my serving? Or do I cook the pasta, then measure out 2 ounces as my serving???
  • Recommendation - Next time you're at walmart, invest in a "diet scale" ... cheapest one is $5 and does the job. It's the serving size by weight. Roughly about 3/4 - 1 cup of uncooked pasta.

    Yes. :)
    2 oz dry means that the serving is however much pasta equals 2 oz before you cook it.

    You weight 2 oz. dry before cooking. I use a cup - put that on the scale and zero it out, then put the pasta in. If you don't have a kitchen scale, you can get a pretty cheap one walmart or target, like Taylor said.

    Love my scale. Best 5.00 gift I've ever gotten. My boyfriend got it for me to weight cheese. Now I weight everything.

    Yeah, 2 oz. of pasta is NOT a lot, especially compared to the portion sizes most of us are used to and restaurants serve us. I was estimating with a half a cup of dry pasta before I got my scale (which is a life saver!). Weigh the 2 oz. out dry and then cook it; doesn't matter what it weighs afterwards but you will definitely notice that it is NOT a lot!! lol

    I've actually gotten used to it ok. When I make my homemade sauce, I generally tend to eat it with more sauce than pasta anyways, so this just justifies that, lol.

    Also for those who would like to know. 2 oz of dry pasta averages about 4.7 oz after it is cooked. I weighed several different kinds dry and cooked so I would be able to cook a whole box and still be able to portion it out. Hope this helps those of you cooking for more than yourselves it sure helped me.

    Psssst.... you get to eat much more spaghetti squash than actual pasta spaghetti! I love spaghetti squash with cubed chicken breast all covered with homemade spaghetti sauce and a couple tablespoons of parm/romano on top. Just have to remember to "pat dry" the squash or you have soup.

    ...That doesn't make any sense. One piece of pasta is bigger than the size of a nickel, and it obviously does not weight 2 oz... Trying to match pasta to the size of a nickel doesn't make any sense!

    Now, maybe it is the WEIGHT of a nickel, and that would be a totally different thing than the SIZE of the nickel. But trying to match the weights I don't think is particularly helpful, either, unless you have a "justice" scale, as it were...

    Where are you from? I had been on the lookout for over a year but after an internet search decided that at $7-$8 a pop it wouldn't be worth it. Your comment leads me to believe I was correct.

    This is what I've always read as well. When I weight out a quarter size amount it is around 2 ounces.
