I workout in the morning before work, and I still have trouble sleeping sometimes. I take melatonin a half hour before bed and I can usually fall asleep pretty easily.

I have that same problem but I start around 630pm; I think its just that extra boost of energy from the workout and that time of the year. Plus its hot as heck here in Texas where I live..

Can you pinpoint what it is that isn't letting you sleep? Is your body wired from a workout? Are you stressed? Mind won't shut off? I have trouble sleeping and the only thing that helps me is taking a few mg of melatonin. I wouldn't recommend it to someone I don't know, but it's what works for me.

I tried yoga, acupuncture, working out earlier, meditation, relaxing music, etc. My body just wouldn't shut off and I need my rest to get up for the gym at 6am.

Drugs? Booze? Sorry, I can't relate since I can fall asleep anywhere at any time in any position. But I think you may be on to something that working out too close to bedtime might be an issue - maybe try switching it up and workout in the morning? It always wakes me up.

You have to look into your habits closely. I found some surprising reasons behind my sleep issues. One was that I was taking magnesium supplements before bedtime. It's actually encouraged to do so, as it's supposed to make you sleep better, but some people, including myself, react the opposite way. The other reason was... well, just silly. I was using skin tightening cream that contained caffeine, guarana and cayenne pepper extract after my evening shower... Yes, I didn't check the label and every day before going to bed I was covering my entire body with caffeine... Go figure...

If it fits into my calories and I can't sleep I have a glass of wine. Gives me that "ooooooohhhh I'm tired now" feeling.

I also work out in the evenings and have long suffered with insomnia. I like taking a hot shower about an hour before I go to sleep. I also have a guided meditation/deep breathing program that I do for 20 minutes right before bedtime. I've been doing it for a while now and haven't had a sleepless night since!

I didn't realize magnesium could do that!!!!!! I take it before bed, also!!!! I do have ADD and take meds for it in the mornings. Melatonin usually helps, but not lately. Thanks for all the advice!!

I've also taken valerian root and it helps til about 2 am. Then I'm restless. I've stopped drinking diet pop after 6pm. Could too much water keep me up??

Just found this list today .........

    10 YOGA POSES FOR SLEEP

Easy Forward Bend (variation of Sukhasana) The easy forward bend pose (sitting, ankles crossed) is accessible even to beginners, and it's a great one to try before bedtime. If you're tight in the hips, Bielkus advises sitting on top of a pillow to make the pose a bit more relaxing.

Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana) To perform this pose, stand with the feet about six inches apart and fold the torso to the ground, reaching toward the ground or bending the arms and grabbing opposite hand to opposite elbow. In addition to helping to relieve headaches and insomnia.

Child's Pose (Balasana) Fold the torso over the legs with the arms extended or by the sides, and rest the forehead on the ground. Take long deep breaths," Bielkus suggests. "Massage the forehead left to right easing tension at the brow point."

Plow Pose (Halasana) Yoga Journal recommends staying in the plow pose for one to five minutes to fall asleep easier. Lie down on your back, lifting your legs over your head and then to the ground behind you, with your hands either on your back for support or on the floor.

Legs Up The Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) This simple pose, performed against a wall, is excellent for evening relaxation and stress relief. Bielkus recommends staying in the pose for as long as five minutes, with the eyes closed and using a soothing eye pillow if desired.

Corpse Pose (Savasana) Get your body into sleep mode with a simple corpse pose, focusing the attention on the body and breath, and letting go of the day's worries.

Supine Spinal Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana) This reclining twisted pose can easily be performed in bed before you fall asleep. Lie down on your back and bring the right knee into your chest and then across your left side.

Seated Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana) Like the supine twist, the seated spinal twist (also known as the half lord of the fishes pose) can create a sense of relaxation in the body while gently stretching the spine. The stretch can be practiced with both legs bent or with one outstretched.

Reclining Butterfly (Supta Baddha Konasana) A variation of the basic butterfly pose (pictured at left), the reclining butterfly can help the body get into rest mode. Lie down on your back -- on your bed or on a mat -- and bring the feet together, splaying out the knees in a diamond. If your hips are tight and the pose feels too intense, Bielkus suggests putting a folded blanket or cushion under each of the knees.

Left Nostril Breathing (Surya Bhedana) To try this relaxing breathing exercise (pranayama), you can either sit up crossed-legged or lie down on your right side. Cover the right nostril with your thumb and extend the fingers out. Then take five to 10 deep breathes out of your left nostril.

You should try melatonin tabs (3mg) if you haven't already. :) You can find them on any vitamin isle.

A cool shower, or at least a cold shot at the end. It brings down your core temp.

I over an over active mind so I can never sleep when I need to. I take ZQuil (It's NyQuil's version of a sleeping aid). Don't worry it's not cold medicine lol it's only for sleeping. I get the pill form (I hate liquid medicine). It says to take 2 but if I do that I will still want to sleep when I need to get up for work lol so I just take 1 and that works great. I am out in 30-45mins. It's not strong either, I still wake up from sounds or to go pee lol so it is a nice sleeping aid for me. I tried Melotonin but it never worked for me. Now if my husband takes Melatonin, he is out in 20 mins lol! Everyone is different. Hope that helps!

I am going to try this. I've wondered how it works. I know NyQuil knocks me out and if I'm desperate I will take it!!

Your comment about diet pop led me to respond. I've become more caffeine sensitive as I age and you may be going through the same thing. My cutoff time is noon and if I have any caffeine after that, it's pretty much guaranteed that I'll be up half the night. Just a thought...you may want to either switch to decaf diet pop or stop drinking it earlier in the day.

My favorite sleep aid is Tylenol PM (or the store brand equivalent) but I only take half to avoid that hungover feeling the next morning.

Yea I hate that hangover feeling from that and Benadryl. I hadn't considered pop earlier than 5 pm being an issue, but it sure may!! I will experiment and see!

I have had the same problem since my hysterectomy 2 years ago. My doctor gave me Ambien, which was amazing until I started doing some pretty weird things in my sleep. (My hubby was quite happy, but that's another story...)
I have since started using a generic nighttime sleep aid and it is working great. Good luck!
