Could someone recommend a post workout bar/shake?

Options
Hello fellow MFP members,

I've been doing insanity and eating healthier since Monday, while trying to get in a habit of cooking healthy for myself I haven't been eating enough calories. I thought one way I could help with this would be a post workout bar/shake of some kind. I would try cooking something but I have 2 young children that need lots of attention so spending too long in the kitchen isn't really something I'd like to do after a 40 minute workout.

This is what I need from a shake/bar:
Low cost - I'm trying to keep to a tight budget, I don't like the idea of spending £1-£2 a day on myself just for a post workout shake/bar
Calories - Something in the region of 200 - 300 would be good, I'm trying to lose weight at the moment so I don't want anything too high
Taste - Anything other than nut or coffee.

Thanks
Ryan

Pure Protein bars are great. With 20gms of protein at just 180-200 calories per bar its "pure protein". I love the flavor too. For a drink I like GNC AMP Protein powder.

I go to a bar called MacDinton's, great drink specials and a live DJ that I can shake my booty to!

Hmmmmm....on a second look at the context, I may be off

If you buy bars in bulk they are usually a little cheaper. I like Clif Bars and Kind bars, you can buy either of those by the box. I know you said you don't have a lot of time, but if you took a little time once a week you could make granola or protein bars or prep smoothie ingredients for the week for cheaper!

For example, fruit and/or PB pre-portioned in a baggie so you can throw it together in the blender with some milk after your workout. Here is a recipe for three ingredient energy bars you could make that would last all week: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-easy-3-ingredient-energy-bars-at-home-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-184306

I usually make myself a protein smoothie. It consists, roughly, of 1 cup of strawberries (or whatever fruit or fruit combo you like), half a cup of ice, quarter cup of milk, and a scoop of pure protein vanilla. You can try whatever protein powder you like, of course. Put it all together in a blender or magic bullet, whatever tool you have. Sometimes I make blueberry & raspberry, or strawberry & banana, sometimes straight up banana. If I have the calories left, I'll add two scoops of protein. The vanilla powder is so mild, that really all you taste is the fruit. Yum!

I drink EAS AdvantEdge shakes. They are high protein, low carb, and the chocolate only has 110 calories. My friend with diabetes recommended them because she uses them for blood sugar control, and I have found they are wonderful after-workout drinks. I can get them as a 4-pack for $6.50. Not sure what that converts to in pounds.

Find a good vanilla protein powder at your local store. Mix 6 ounces of pineapple juice w/1 scoop of protein powder in a mixer. After that blends well add ice to make it slushy. Tastes great. Another alternative - if you are doing the Insanity workout you should know about Shakeology. Shakeology is pricey for a month supply but it does taste great. I mix a 1/2 scoop of chocolate shakeology, 1/2 scoop of my regular vanilla protein & 1 cup of skim milk. Blend well and then add ice. This one tastes like a Wendy's chocolate frosty. Both recipes are between 200-300 calories. There are also more recipe ideas on the Beachbody website. You could try those w/a protein powder of your choice.

Depends on your type of workout and what your nutritional needs are after a workout...

-More cardio intensive workouts I go with 2:1:1 Recovery by Optimum Nutrition. 30 servings per tub, $40-49. You can mix with any type of milk or just water. 210 calories + whatever you mix it in. The cheaper version would be chocolate milk as someone else said. Its 4:1 Carb to Protein ratio is widely seen as the perfect post cardio intensive drink.

-If your workouts are more strength based and you want to help your muscles, a whey protein powder (again, I tend to prefer the Optimum Nutrition brand for quality and taste) mixed in water or milk might be a good solution as well.

I normally use the chocolate flavors in both of these, but also tend to keep PB2 in the cabinet right next to my powders and mix in 1-1/2 teaspoons to give it a peanut butter flavor as well!

Well I didn't expect this many replies over such a short space of time! I'll look into each recommendation and see what fits my needs the best.

thebigcb: Will this really work well with insanity while trying to lose weight? I actually love chocolate milk and I have a tub of nesquik sitting in the cupboard hiding away since I started trying to lose weight.

Thank you all ever so much for the speedy replies!

depending on what I am using it for I will either eat a PR Bar or make a smoothie with strawberries, bluberries, spinach , ice , non fat milk and protein powder. I used to use the expensive powder from GNC but now I just use the powder from Walmart . A lot cheaper and works just as well.....but the chocolate milk is also a good idea as long as you get the lower calorie milk so you are not drinking all your calories

Low fat milk and chocolate nesquick is a good recovery drink. Its not going to have the same amount of protein as a specialised PROTEIN powder, but its fine

I use and recommend the Herbalife 24 Rebuild Strength shake after workouts. For a 190 kcal you get 24g protein (milk, whey and whey isolate). Tastes like chocolate milk. For an additional 90 kcal and 8g protein, use 8oz of fat free milk. Provides immeditate and sustained muscle recovery.
