Nike running

I like the app but being frugal and not having unlimited data on my cell phone is a problem for me. I am thinking of getting the little thing you put in your sneakers but wondering does it transmit to your phone the whole time? Does this use data ? Or will it upload once I get home and have wifi available? Thanks for any knowledge you can impart :flowerforyou:

What is the difference between using the item that goes on your shoe or just using the nikeplus app with the gps built in reader?0
-
When you use the app it uses my phones gps to track my run thus using my data. I am trying to find out how the tracker you attach to the shoe works, if it will track my run then upload the info to my phone when I am back home and have wifi, therefore not using my cell phones data plan?
Any one know?0 -
Bump anyone?0

Are you sure the GPS uses data ... The GPS is a satellite function that's why you can still use your GPS even when you don't have service on your phone... the only time the Nike app uses data should be when you tell it to sync your runs to the nike plus website so you can track all your stats. I think, you might want to call your service provider and see if it actually uses data to use the GPS.
And I have never used the shoe piece but a guy I work with and my girlfriend both used it and they weren't huge fans of it.0 -
I don't think the GPS uses data, well i know it doesn't on my iphone and my garmin forerunner is gps and doesn't have a data connection so unless your app is transmitting live data back to a website your data should be untouched.0

Exactly. I am not familiar with the Nike app but Endomondo requires a data connection but this is only for pulling down map data, not GPS data (and probably ads as well since the app is free, but not sure). There is a low power version in Endo Pro that I am assuming would turn off the cell radio to conserve battery.
The foot pod OP is mentioning is going to be a pedometer that tracks steps. It would be used in conjunction with the GPS data to get a better estimate for calories burned (GPS data is only going to show speed, altitude, and distance, foot pods will show how far a stride the runner has and how often they strike).
If the Nike app uses cell data during the run adding the foot pod is not going to make any difference to data usage.0 -
I use the Nike + app and I can confirm it doesn't use data when tracking you with the GPS.
It does however use Data when pulling data when you initially open the app and when you finish your run, but it's minimal0 -
I use the shoe pod for running indoors or when it's cloudy outside and GPS is hit or miss. I don't use the phone app but use it with the watch. The watch plugs into your computer to charge and to upload your run data.0

I know the app definitely uses data, maybe not from using the gps I could be wrong on that but it uses data. If the thing you put on the shoe doesn't connect to the phone until I get home where I have wifi instead of while I am out using my data that is what I am trying to figure out but they don't really explain how it works when I try to look it up. I was hoping some one here used it and could tell me. I just don't want to waste my money on something that isn't going to solve my problem .0

Every time I use it it uses a lot of my data and I only go on a twenty minute run. I start it when I leave my drive way and end the run when I get back. Then I go inside where my phone connects to my wifi.0 -

Then I would suggest looking at a running watch like the Garmin, Polar, Nike, or TomTom watches that have GPS built in. You can use GPS, HRM, and some can use foot pods. They store everything locally and when you get home you can upload the data wherever you want. I personally am using the TomTom Multisport.0 -

The foot pod SHOULD connect to your phone via BlueTooth. That will depend on the phone you have.
Your data issue is related to a transfer of information between your phone and the Nike website. I haven't looked into turning it off because I am unlimited but if you can disconnect the sync you should be able to stop that data usage.0 -
I believe you can use the nike+ sensor with a regular ipod so I would have to think it will not use data and it will upload to the computer through itunes or something. Not 100% sure though I have never used one. A heart rate monitor is great for tracking calories burned if that is what your looking for or the fitbit flex can estimate fairly well for distance providing you have the correct user defined data input.0

Ok that makes sense I will look into my set up thank you. Also I will see if the pod will work with the iPod I have that could fix my problem thank you0 -

Even if you run the iPod with the Nike+ running app and no foot pod that would fix your problem because you are't using your phone. I don't believe you need the pod to use the app on any device.0 -

Thank you I will see if it will work with my I pod. I have a body media that tracks my calories, I am using the app to see my progression in running not so much for calorie burns but thank you for the suggestion it may help some one else0 -

I will look into that also thank you, I do have a little bit older I pod so I will have to see if it can use the app thank you0 -
I use the app and the watch that is connected to my shoe pod, I don't use them both at one, just depending on where I am or if I want music and such.
The app has never caused me a problem with data as I start it up when I am still connected to my wifi at home and I complete my run when I am back at home.
If you don't have the pod, don't buy if you use the app, I find it useless to use them together.0 -
Dont get the sensor, its a waste of money :grumble:
It connects via bluetooth and just like any other pedometer, it registered your steps via the motion.
I found it quite tempramental... sometimes it would connect, sometimes it wouldnt, and I kept having to do a hard reset on it.. Then it stood no chance when I connected my bluetooth headphones... the readings also appeared to be inacurate (I would do the same thing every day and it would vary a huge amount.
The.. the ball breaker... you cant replace the battery when it dies (it is a sealed unit) so you must replace the sensor every time the battery dies.. and they arent that cheap. :explode:
I would stik with your Nike+ on your phone IMO :drinker:0 -
Nike plus doesnt use data during the run only the GPS. You can simply be frugal and turn off your 4g until after you upload your run on your wifi..... The upload of the run is what eats up your data. The app works with your 4g turned off.0

So I talked to the app support and he said some cell companies use data to boost your gps if the signal isn't strong and that may be what is happening. He suggested I put my phone on airplane mode that way it cannot use data. Worked like a charm. Thank you all for your help, if so many of you hadnt told me it shouldn't be using much data I might not have called tech.0

now i'm going to have to have a look at my data usage, because my gps is pretty bad (never occurred to me that it might use data...).
i got the shoe sensor, and it works quite well, but overestimates my runs by about 10-15%. maybe i need to re-calibrate it...0
