I think something is wrong is the system.

Hi

My name is Lisa, and I just join this site. I'm 22 female, 155.0 and 5'1. I want to loose 2 pounds a week and it says to loose 1 pound a week, I would need to eat 1,200. But if I want to loose 2 pounds wouldn't I take 500 calories off. Can someone please, help me. My goal weight is 105.

Thanks

MFP does not allow you to go below 1200/day. Kinda wish it wouldn't allow small people to choose 2 lbs/week either, but oh well.

The site limits you to 1200 calories so that your body can get the necessary number of calories without damaging your body. I am sure that multitude of others will pop in and explain it better than me.

It wont' allow you to go below 1200 per day because that's not healthy. You shouldn't be losing 2 lbs per week unless you're got at least ?75 lbs to lose, so leave it at 1 pounds per week and lose it for good instead of quickly.

MyFitnessPal will not let you eat less than 1200 calories a day, because it's not sustainable. Do not try to cheat the system by eating less than that - it won't do you any good. At our height and weight (I'm 5'1'', 147 lbs.) we need to be losing weight more slowly, so stick with 1 lb. or even a 1/2 lb. a week, and eat back exercise calories.

1,200 is the absolute minimum recommended intake for adult women. MFP will never set anyone lower than that number. Also, unless you are very overweight, 2 pounds a week is simply not realistic.

Take a look at this thread. It's an excellent explanation for how to set a calorie goal and reasonable expectations.

MFP almost always sets your net calories at 1200. Read and try this to determine what your calorie intake should be based on your level of activity, current size and goals.

You don't weigh enough to safely lose 2lbs/wk or your activity settings are wrong.

    Exercise.
  • I track all my calories for today including dinner, and it came to 767. I find when eating at home, I could do less calories. But going out to eat, well then every calorie counts. Haha

Unless you have a substantial amount to lose 2 lbs a week isn't a very realistic or sustainable goal. Especially if you're wanting to be healthy about it.

Depending on how much you have left to lose, 2lbs a week isn't realistic or safe.

People who bang straight into the 1200 limit. OP (you) is hitting 1200 with 1 lb/week. Silly and confusing to allow her (you) to choose 2 lb/week (hence the OP).

    1. You don't have enough to lose to chose 2 lbs a week. At 155lbs at 5'5 you are about 5 lbs from a healthy weight. While some prefer to be lower than that, the most you can realistically expect to lose is closer to .5lbs a week, 1 lb at most.
    2. 105 is underweight for your size.
    3. MFP also expects you to log any exercise and eat that back.

Its not the system, you have to properly use it - ie the correct activity level and appropriate weight loss goal along with logging exercise and it works just fine.
  • Maybe I should eat some cookies and not complain that I have extra calories that I didn't use. Haha

Just because MFP limits you to 1200 calories, doesn't mean you have to eat that many. One of my friends did that, but she got her doctor's approval first, and she had to send him weekly menu and progress reports.

My bad, misread. Most still apply, except #2. #1 still applies except the underweight part.

1200 calories a day is the absolute minimum a person can consume without problems with malnutrition. All you need to do is just exercise more to increase your calorie deficit every day, and you'll be able to reach your 2 pound a week deficit.

Be warned, though, it is really, really hard to lose 2 pounds a week when you only have 10-20 to lose overall. You'll be more successful if you aim for more like 1/2 pound a week.
