Intermittent fasting, how to?
Replies

I do the fasting on days where I don't work out with my trainer and eat regular times on training days. It works very well for me0

He has linked you to thee 5 days eating, 2 days eating 600 calories per day, it is just a fad, unnecessary, and really, you just don't want to introduce that into your life, I promise you, lol. I have spent the last year and a half training people and testing numerous things on my life, and that is definitely not something you want to be doing.
Find this surprising! I'm used to the "hate" from people that haven't tried any form of IF but promoting 16:8 and dismissing 5:2 is unusual.
So if I work out my weekly food intake and divide it over seven days of 16:8 or take exactly the same weekly food intake and divide it into 5:2 you would enthusiastically promote one and dismiss the other?
Why?
Background - I've been doing 5:2 for a year and found it to be entirely positive for me. That's in terms of health, fitness, strength and weight control by the way.0 -
I will tell you why.

How can fasting for 16 hours be the way to go, but fasting for 24 hours is a big no-no? If you follow EatStopEat you don't have to stick to 500/600 kcal, you can break your fast with a "normal" meal.0 -

(a lot of credit went to leangains )
As fas as I can see that should really read "all credit goes to leangains" as I can't see anything original in your forum post. Also when you say you just "published" this... it's just another post on another forum??? Like I am "publishing" this now... bit of a big word for a few plagiarised sentences don't you think?
So, you're 24, started training a grand total of 2 years ago (as per your own website) and now you want to be an online coach. You say you're a "fully qualified" personal trainer with "expertise" in nutrition. I would be interested to see exactly what that means in terms of formal qualifications. Anyone can do a 6-week course with Premier Global and call themselves a PT, then set up a website, join a few forums and spout "ask me anything".
:huh:0 -

Thank you everyone! I am now on my second day of the 16:8. I think this is perfect for my schedule. I am so far loving it! I get to eat a little more in the evening and seem a little happier at night! But, it is only day 2! Tomorrow is Saturday, so i normally go to the gym in the morning instead of the evening. Will it be ok for me to work out during the fasting time? I dont want to pass out. I wont get to it till noon. Let me know what you think. Or do I do this for 7 days straight?0

Some people (like me) can workout completely fasted and others can't.I have a friend who tried to workout fasted and he felt really dizzy.Try it for yourself and see if you can handle it.Personally I workout with nothing but black coffee in my stomach.0

Glad that it's working for you! I have no problems what so ever working out fasted, I even had some of my best workouts at the end of a 24-hour fast. You just have to try it so see how it works for you. Good luck!0 -
Hi there, I am looking into doing the IF thing. I like big meals and I love dinner. It sounds like I would like to do the 16:8 deal. But I have a few questions.
1. When Do I workout during the fasting days? I normally come home from an 11 hour day, go to gym, then eat dinner, then bed.
2. Do you not eat for 16 hours every day and then eat for 8? Or do you do this every other day?
3. How many days a week?
4. Do I stay in my 1500-1600 calories on the 8 hour eating days?
5. Do you really eat and drink nothing during the 16 hours?
Thank you!
Age 31
195lbs
Lost 40 pounds
Gym 5 days a week, try to lift in 2-3 of those days
1) I workout first thing in the morning but you need to do what works for you, some people like to workout right before their first meal, etc:)
2) I do 20/4 on work days so only tuesday-thursday and 16/8 on my weekends. Yep I don't eat until my 'feeding window.'
3) Seven days a week, I enjoy it:)
4) If that's a suitable deficit for your goals yeah you should stick with those calories during the feeding window.
5) You generally don't eat anything until your feeding window (so the eight hours) but can drink diet drinks and such, I just stick to water:)0 -

Yep, 7 days straight, 365 days a year - obviously it won't hurt if some days you just don't do it0 -
I'd skip doing fasting, just messes with metabolism in the end, along with severely restricting calories. Unless it's a religious mandate, don't worry about the how to, just don't participate in it.0

Fasting does no such thing as "messing" with the metabolism, sorry dude, back to the research!0 -
So I am in day 3, and I have drank a coffee every day. I hope this doesnt screw anything up. I just couldnt start my day with out it. Yes, I do use creamer and sugar..........but just one cup, most of the times dont even finish it. Is this screwing it up?0

If it's more than 50 calories yes..
I do the intermittent fasting with an 8 hour window + the 5:2 (or 4:3 depends). It works for me, it's been a month and I've lost +10 pounds already (including one week holiday in Spain so I basically didn't lose anything there haha).
It works for me because I found out that I eat more when I have breakfast.. I snack more and I keep snacking! So jumping until lunch hour it's perfect for me. Also, I'm not really used to eat late at night, so for me stopping at 8 pm (unless a special ocassion) is quite perfect.
About the 5:2... I like it.. It's easier for me to maintain my weekly calories goal and to include social gatherings in my diet, I just move it around so I can have both my weight loss and my cake . I know it doesn't work for all people, but for me it's perfect.0 -

Coffee is fine, sugar and cream are going to break your fast.0 -

Not really, I wouldnt even drink it if I had to do black. I made my normal coffee this morining, measured the creamer and sugar and drank about a quarter of it. At least I can have a little taste of it. So a the whole thing would of been 50 calories, and drank just a small amount of it.....hows that?0 -
I'll refer you to the leangains site. 50 cals may or may not break your fast, I'm not sure. I would tend to think yes it will.
I drink it black so I haven't really researched this.0 -

Everyone that has worked with Martin and Martin himself have referred to 50 cals or less is okay.0 -

There you have it!
I was worried there for a minute, because coffee should be a universal human right.0 -
May I suggest that before reading and relying on the postings of a bodybuilder / coach you also try reading the reams of medical research into Intermittent Fasting.
As an exercise physiologist with access to a medical library I have spent about 18 months reading high quality medical research into the physiological and psychological benefits of IF. They are real, measurable and, for most people, achieved safely.
So when doin the lean gains 16:8 can u take a pre-workout when working out or lifting in a fasted state?0 -
