hey all!
with breast cancer awareness month slowly aproaching us, and being that this walk means so much to me I decided to put on my big girl pants and just do it! It feels so good to officailly sign up for my first 5k. I was the girl to always be "sick" on the day of the mile run back in school during gym class. so now its time to face my own fears, and get over this small hurtle so give back to so many who deal with a much bigger hurtle of fighting for their life.
so i am posting on here for any TIPS!!! favorite ear buds? music playlist? tracking milage? favorite outfit to wear? sneakers?
tell me all!!!!

my one and only suggestion.....just keep moving. I did a 5k at 400lbs on June1 of this year and as long as I kept moving I was ok. Its your first one, have some fun with it, dont worry about time, just worry about finishing. Get some friends to go along with you. I had a fewpeople along with me that could have done the 5k no problem at a much faste time, but they stayed with me and kept me going.
So just keep moving and get to the end. Oh and ear buds help if its just you. Keep them low enough you can hear the cheers from the spectators but loud enough to keep you motivated.
Good luck!0 -
Are you wanting to run it or walk it? If you want to run it, checkout Couch to 5K. If you want to walk it, just get our butt out there and walk a little each night. MayMyRun is a pretty decent (free) app for tracking your routes and stuff. Wear whatever you're comfortable in, make sure you have good shoes. Listen to music that makes you want to move! Also, make sure that whatever you plan to run/walk in, especially bottoms, you've run/walked in before. I've raced in the race shirt without trying it out with it being no big deal, but definitely test out your bottoms with all accessories (arm band, waist clip, whatever you'll be wanting with you) ahead of time.0

For clothes, I suggest compression shorts/capris. I went so long without them and now it feels awesome to wear them. They keep you from chafing...(since most women do NOT have a thigh gap). Also, I bought a SPIbelt-its a running belt that is meant to be worn tight along your waist so it doesn't bounce and you can carry your phone, keys, etc. I bought it with the water proof sleeve but its basically just a ziploc bag haha.
I use Runkeeper to track runs, but have used Nike+ as well (I like Runkeeper more only because I can track indoor cardio as well). As for music, check out www.rockmyrun.com. Its not free, but I've gotten offers to get several songs for free. Its basically DJs make remixes of various songs (pretty much every genre you could want) and they tell you the length, BPM, etc. I love them (I hate that gap between songs you get and these mash them altogether to avoid that)0 -

Can you have your earbuds plugged into your phone and use them while your phone is in the SPIbelt? (Hope that makes sense. )0 -
Oh!!! Time to use my favorite all time quote!! "THE MIRACLE ISN'T THAT I FINISHED. THE MIRACLE IS THAT I HAD THE COURAGE TO START!" John Bingham--

I do, its a zipper pouch so you just run it through the zipper. Even when I use the water proof sleeve (if it looks like it could rain) I still run my earbuds through it and just hope that its not a massive downpour that sudden pops up. I haven't had any problems though.0 -
Good luck, I'm running my first 5K in September with my daughter. Neither of us are really runners, but have been practicing, and ready or not come September, we will be running it. I'm very excited about it, my daughter is obese and I'm more excited for her then for me, but it will be an accomplishment for both of us0

I would suggest going to a good running store in your area to get fitted for proper shoes. The store in my area actually looks at how you bear your weight and then they have you run outside the store while they watch so they can see if the shoes are appropriate for your specific needs.0
