I really like slivered almonds & salad pizzazz. Threw some mozzarella pearls on my salad today for protein. I don't need no stinkin' dressing!
  • I have a cucumber salad where I only add lime juice and even the junk food eaters like it:)
  • I like a glob of cottage cheese and if I want more flavor, it only takes a dab of dressing because it already has a nice creamy coating!

I make my own with a base of fat free mayo and rice wine vinegar...very, very low calorie and satisfies the "ranch" dressing craving to some extent. I think it usually amounts to about 10 calories per serving...maybe 20 if you use 2 TBS fat free mayo.

    Salad dressing spritzers!
  • I also use salsa. Sometimes I just add things like beans, hard boiled eggs, and cheese. If you make a salad interesting enough, it doesn't even need dressing.

I use just straight balsamic vinegar. You have to be careful not to over due. But now that I do it this way, I'm not sure what the olive oil was for. I only ever wanted the tangy of the vinegar anyway.

If I want something creamy, I just crush my avocado and use it as a dressing all by it's self.

I use plain vinegar (balsamic or red wine), or occasionally a vinegar and olive oil mix. Some people don't like the taste of plain vinegar, though, so it depends on your taste buds. Something I want to try is a mix of yogurt and tahini (I made my own tahini recently) - it won't be super low in calories since the tahini is made of sesame seeds and olive oil, but if you use it sparingly it will probably still be better than a lot of the dressings out there!
  • Lemon juice or fat free dressings, I also put the dressing on the side and dunk the salad into the dressing use way less that way and definitely ask for the dressing on the side if I go to a restaurant

I've discovered this, too. The less processed food I eat, the more I like the taste of raw veggies all by themselves. I don't use dressing (or a dressing alternative) too often these days. I like adding meat/protein, beans, eggs, seeds, etc. to salads. Yum!!

those are all good. thank you
  • But now that I do it this way, I'm not sure what the olive oil was for.

Eating a bit of fat with green veggies helps your body absorb the oil soluble vitamins and minerals (which in turn means you get more out of it).

Edit: Oops, almost forgot. Balsamic vinegar is one of my favorites too. And of course a good grind or five of pepper.

    Salad dressing spritzers!
    this sounds good and light
  • Depending on the time of year (and depending on where you live), if you can get fresh tomatoes, rather than cutting them up and putting IN the salad, an old family secret of my husbands Italian family is........you SQUEEZE the tomato into a bowl, infuse with fresh garlic, salt and pepper.....they also add oil/vinegar, but I prefer just the plain "tomato juice" w/out oil or vin......summertime is great for the juicy tomatoes.....I'm getting hungry for salad now!!!!!

I bought a spray bottle, washed it and poured lime juice in it. I use that to spritz on my salads and then sprinkle with Mrs. Dash's Fiesta Lime. I don't even log it in because it's virtually zero in every category.
  • One tablespoon of no sugar added raspberry jam and a little water mixed together. Tastes great over spinach leaves and low fat blue cheese.....yum

The more I've been exposed to fresh salads with high-quality greens, the more I find I do not even need dressing. I can hardly believe it, but the flavor of the greens and other vegetables you could put in are so great, I often feel that dressing covers them up! sometimes I make my own dressing, but if I used it at all, it's very, very sparingly, like 2 teaspoons for a smallish salad: extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, (add vinegar first then add oil to it slowly and whisk) and minced garlic is a good start. If you like more tangyness, add a good mustard that you like. Lemon is nice, too. I like vinaigrettes over creamy dressings, because I find them to be more light and refreshing (and they're better for losing weight, too, obviously)...another good thing to put on salads is pickled green beans with fresh dill and maybe a few crumbles of reduced fat feta cheese in addition to tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli. You might find with such flavorful ingredients such as dill and feta, you won't miss the dressing!
  • If you can't find anything you like and decide to keep using salad dressings my friend had a great tip for me. When you order of make a salad, keep the dressing on the side and dip your fork once before picking up the salad, you use WAY LESS dressing but it seems to be the perfect amount taste wise.
