So much for not judging people. LOL way to go MFP.

uhm with that being said i will give u the advice i follow when wanting a naughty snack:

Buy it and hold on to it until you are around friends.
Open it in front of them.
They WILL ask you for a piece (its scientifically proven fact).
You will be forced to share because its rude not to and everyone will benefit: You will still get your tasty treat without eating the entire thing and getting the cals. Sharing will make the friends happy and it will make them like u more. u will lose weight over time by sharing method. and everyone will be happier in the long run. =)

Nobody here was judgmental. What you saw was a lot of different people being SUPPORTIVE. Which is the point of this place.

This girl is standing on a cliff threatening to jump and we're all trying very hard to talk her down. A lot of folks on this board have been there - otherwise, why are there whole discussion groups here dedicated to people with terrible relationships with food? She's young and has a whole lifetime's worth of choices to make. This is an opportunity for her to make some critical ones that will affect the rest of her life either positively or negatively. We're all hoping to help her make the positive choice.

Would definitely not do the Chew and Spit for the reason others have said. Instead, make a list of 100 calorie snacks that would satisfy your cravings and be sure to keep some measured for easy access. The snack size baggies are good for this. Salty: FF pretzels, crackers, ff popcorn, crunchy: celery sticks, carrot sticks, apple slices, or any of the salty snacks. Sweet: Apple, fruit, sf pudding, chocolate chips, cookie, hard candy, etc. 100 cals is not very much but can be a lifesaver when you have a craving. A short walk will give you the extra calories you need to accommodate your program.

hit your calories. eat a sustainable diet. don't spit, swallow. if you're not planning to swallow then don't put it in your mouth.

    I giggled.

    Sorry, I'll see myself out.

You giggled? I damn near had tears running down my legs!!!

When you have to specify "no judging" in the thread title I think you know the answer. It's not a healthy or sustainable plan. It won't help you learn to eat better or make substitutions for your cravings. It won't help you build the healthy habits that are important for long term success once you reach your goal. And it's certainly not going to help you develop a healthy relationship with food.

I don't think that there are any calories in chewing something but not swallowing it. A lot of creamy and sugary things probably dissolve on the tongue, but it's not enough to care about.

Although chewing and spitting is associated with eating disorders, I think it's pretty tame. There's no stomach acid destroying the lining of the esophagus or dissolving the enamel of the teeth as with bulimics. As a habit it's unpleasant.

But if you spit something out to interrupt a binge, I think it's fine. I've been known to dive into a piece of cake and then come to my senses after the second or third bite, and spit the last bite out before tossing. My thought process is "this doesn't taste as good as I thought, so why waste the calories?" If it's really good though, then I'll eat the slice. The act of spitting out the last bite (not the whole thing) grosses me out a little, which reduces the craving. I have prevented some mistakes this way. If you don't have the calories to waste and put something random in your mouth just to spit it out, that sounds kind of unpleasant and restrictive. Better to eat a couple bites of it and save the rest for later. Or don't eat it in the first place.

My best advice is this: don't feel pressure to eat if you don't want to. When losing weight one has to get used to wasting food. If I put too much food on my plate at a buffet, or a relative forces a heaping desert at the table, something is going in the trash or in a rubber maid. But you don't want to be too restrictive either. Eat whatever you want once every few days as long as it doesn't blow your calories.

Ahhh && this is why i stopped posting on the forums.... No one ever gets my sarcasm over writing. lol.

To spell it out JoyJoy, i was being sarcastic with the non judging portion, Honestly chances are if you ask not to be judged, it something terribly judge worthy. With that being said i think OP is smart enough to know that what she is asking is judge worthy, otherwise she wouldn't have asked not to be judged. She already knows in her heart that this is unhealthy behavior so i dont have to say that to her.

OP asked for judgement free zone, So i chose to keep my personal opinion to myself and instead of telling her what to do and what not to do, im sharing a healthier alternate approach for her to enjoy her snacks. Everybody wins.
  • It sounds like you're really struggling with food right now, it sounds like an awfully hard place to be.

Number one, be kind to yourself!

Chewing and spitting is a terrible idea. But the answer is possibly, you can possibly get calories from chewing and spitting. Carbohydrates begin breaking down the second they hit saliva. It would be minimal though. But it is still a terrible idea.

My suggestion, if you are craving food. Check in with yourself on if you are hungry. If it is true hunger. There is emotional hunger or anxiety that can feel like hunger, or just general emptyness. There is also just cravings for food, that can be like an addiction.

Really check in about it, learn to feel if your hunger is real for that specific food. And if you are REALLY truely hungry for it, EAT IT. Not a huge binge or over eating portion, but not only three bites either. Have a reasonable portion that is satiating and good.

Learn to trust yourself, you're not your enemy. At least you don't have to be.

If it doesn't make it to your stomach you aren't getting any of calories. But I think this isn't the best idea. Maybe if you want some some cake or chips or whatever it is. Have it, just take a couple bites and enjoy it. Remember you saw someone doing this on a show about ED so in my opinion it could lead to one. I know sometime I just want to do extreme stuff too but I tell myself that will not last and I will gain it back. Best of luck to you!

Plan a maintenance day once a week when you can have the things you're craving. For the rest of the week, find some salty/sweet things that satisfy you without putting you over your goal. The whole chewing and spitting thing? No.

I think it's a bad idea to emulate something you saw on tv as a general rule. I think it's a very, very, bad idea to emulate something you saw a woman suffering from anorexia do on a show called Intervention. Whether it's the gate way to an eating disorder or just a bit ew it's a bad idea. If you have cravings indulge them. Fit whatever it is into your day. If nothing else you can lower your weight loss goal from 2 lbs to 1 lb or .5 lbs and have the extra room to actually eat foods.

That is an extremely bad idea unless you are working on having an eating disorder. Plan your calories for the day so you can have a little treat, completely chewed and swallowed. Losing weight isn't about depriving yourself of everything, it's about learning to eat in a sensible way that you can live with the rest of your life.

    Solid good advice.

Serious answer ... please don't mess with food and guilt. That only takes you to a bad place. I struggled with anorexia for years. those sorts of "tricks" are fallacious and only serve to make your relationship with food ever more depraved.

As per above, allow a little room every day for something that will satisfy those cravings and learn to appreciate them as treats in a healthy balanced way that you can sustain for life.

    :)

Just eat something low calorie instead. Try fresh cut veggies with salsa, air popped popcorn, baked pita triangles, or rice cakes when you want something crunchy and salty.

By the way, if you are drinking fluids more than eating, your salt cravings could be valid. We need a certain amount of sodium and it can be thrown off by overconsumption of beverages without enough salt to offset it. Don't take risks with your electrolytes. (I have no idea if imbalance is a problem for you, but based on the limited info in your post, thought it might be worth a mention.)

A friend of mine's daughter had this very issue when she was a teen and ended up in the hospital. I would actually suggest speaking to a medical professional about this.

Additionally, if you are not ingesting the food, you aren't taking in the calories. However, this method you are suggesting is not a healthy view of food and fueling your body. I wouldn't take eating or nutrition advice from an active anorexic. And I mean that in the sincerest way....it just makes more sense to get healthy by following the examples of others who are healthy or improving in their health, don't you think?

I saw the same thing on a different program. I even thought, "Hmmmm, maybe I should just do that." I didn't though.

Trust me, you don't want to go down that road!!!! You really do need to feel the guilt of eating something you shouldn't. You need to learn the self control that it takes to beat this.

You don't want this "chew and spit" to be your crutch. Learn how to take care of yourself.

You cannot ****ing ask for people not to judge you or ot to tell you what you're doing isnt okay because it,s not. Asking for advices on your eating disorder here is disgusting. This pisses me off so much. I'm a recovering bulimic trying to get healthy and I came on here because it was focused on HEALTH. Promoting eating disorders is wrong and all you people giving her advices on how to lose weight with this diet should be ashamed..

Food is food crunch it then swallow....
Why would you spit it into a cup?
You can get all those flavours in your calorie allowence. Or try cold pickled veg, Korean/Japanese style are delicious. You can get others in jars from the store...they are yum and no spitting out required as they are rather low cals.
