I usually stay away from tempura, because, well...it's fried. Spicy tuna rolls are the best. You can't go wrong with tuna and rice imo. Be weary of sauce too, as it usually has a mayonnaise base, which as well know is the opposite of eating healthy. Good luck!

I'm definitly one for sushi rolls - not a big fan of Nigiri (block of rice topped with piece of fish). Here's a good website for approximate calories. Note: a roll is not one piece, it usually consists of 5 or 6 pieces.

    http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-health/calories-in-sushi/

In general, it's like going out to eat anywhere else. Avoid fried (tempura) and sauces when possible. The spicy rolls tend to contain mayo or cream cheese - while delicious, it's a big punch to the calorie count. If your roll comes with a sauce you don't want to use calories on, just scrape it off.

I typically start with the seaweed salad (yummy but definitely need floss after) and then 2 or 3 rolls depending on how hungry I am. My faves are - unagi (eel), california and salmon. For me, the dangerous part is the drinks - yummy rum and fruit juices. Mmmm While I'm not a fan of miso soup, most people I know love it.

Oh and be VERY careful of the wasabi - green stuff - it's pretty powerful! Definitely try it but just a tiny bit. The pink stuff is pickled ginger. I think it's pretty tasty and adds a nice zing.

Just stay away from the rolls with all the crap on them.

    I eat
    california rolls
    yellowtail w/ scallion
    spicy tuna
    tuna

if you want to get REALLY picky- just get the sashimi and get seaweed paper on the side (I have eaten with my body building buddies- adn while they were heavy cutting that's what they eat)

otherwise- they eat pretty much any variety of what i listed- nothing with crap on it- just straight hand rolls.

Rice and fish- easy peasey. :D

Godzerralllllla roll is derrrricious but not so good for you.

I love California rolls. but they're full of mayo, avocado and white rice. Try for a brown rice version if they have it, and log it.

Stick with sashimi or nigiri and you should be fine. Simple rolls are okay but it can be hard to judge what you're eating with some of the specialty ones.

And the rice is fine. That said, it is rice and vinegar with some sugar, so it is not just rice.

I am going out for sushi tonight. I love sashimi (no rice) and fill up quickly. The best roll to get is Naruto Maki
It is a very thin slice of cucumber that they roll crab meat in it and while it has a tiny bit of cream cheese, it far outweighs the white rice.
Also, order Edamame (I ask for it with no salt). I can munch on these while everyone else is having their apps and not feel neglected. Ask for the green tea...lots of healthy benefits. Also, if you use soy sauce, choose the bottle with the green lid, it's lower salt. I try to be careful that day with my other meals and work out.
One last suggestion. My hubby loves the fresh tuna salad...tuna, avocados, lettuce, carrots and ask for the kimchi dressing on the side.
    Enjoy!
You can check out my diary, it's open.

Dude, the rice is ****e. It's not just rice. They put crap in it to make it the way it is. I guess people don't know this. You might as well eat fish and chips. This like a salad versus a ha,burger argument. The rolls are made with crap. Mayo all over them. CA rolls are probably one of the top worst. Do I eat them? Yes. I'm just saying dont fool yourself. Go have a cheeseburger, it's probably better for you.

Honestly, it sounds like you go to a pretty crappy sushi place.

when i have sushi, i really don't care to "stay within limits."

i go crayyyyyzayyyyy. and that's fine with me. because sushi is OM NOM NOM.

    edamame
    seaweed salad
    california roll
    spicy tuna roll
anything with eel or soft shell crab
    a specialty roll
    sashimi, oh sashimi
    tempura--come at me, bro!!

i'll eat whatever. cuz it's so freaking good.

If you can't handle the fish low-cal, consider viewing edamame and other tofus (not swimming in calorie sauce, obviously) as the central protein.

Have plenty of miso soup- the liquid will fill you up and it clocks in at like 80 cals a bowl.

If you get rolls, ask for no sauce or sauce on the side. Look for rolls rolled in cucumber or rice paper (without rice), and see if there are any you like.

You have to get a little creative at sushi restaurants to fit them in your macros! Good luck and have fun!

Also, sake's gives you quite an alcohol bang for the calorie buck ;)

Avoid tempura and sweet sauces, or anything crunchy.

That said, my favorite roll has tempura shrimp and cream cheese and is doused in eel sauce.

    Benefits of green tea
There are four primary polyphenols in green tea and they are often collectively referred to as catechins.  Powerful antioxidants, catechins have been shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and have a beneficial effect on health. Clinical tests have shown that catechins destroy free radicals and have far-reaching positive effects on the entire body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can damage the body at the cellular level leaving the body susceptible to cancer, heart disease and other degenerative diseases.

No way is it worse calorie and fat wise as a cheeseburger. The place I go to hardly uses mayo in their CA rolls and the rice has vinegar and a little sugar to make it sticky and give it flavor. Plus, the sashimi is just fish and said rice, pretty clean for a restraint food.

I am one of those people who doesn't eat real sushi.

Cali rolls, tempura, fried. I don't care. As long as their is imitation crab and no real raw fish, I dig it.

When I go for sushi, I go all out. I don't care what the calories are. I go for the dynamite roll and the avocado maki with extra ginger. Thank god I barely get sushi anymore. The odd time I get the miso soup too. I have stopped myself from getting tempura though, that's the one thing I will say. Although if someone I'm eating out with gets tempura, I always ask for a bite lol

I can't be trusted near sushi. Or sashimi. A sushi run for me can go into the quadruple calories (hence I only do them as a special day, and with some heavy workouts to counteract).

A big pile of sashimi (I usually go for 16 oz of a variety) is always a good run, with some seaweed salad and miso soup.
