Meal replacements don't teach you about proper nutrition and calorie manipulation. Once you start eating real food after losing the weight, because you haven't learned about calories and nutrition, you will gain the weight back. Statistics show you probably will gain even more than you initially lost.

Eat real food and track your macros and calories. That is sustainable and won't change when you are done losing weight. You just learn to adjust the correct amounts to maintain.

ETA: I actually did Slimfast for a while back in college, and I did lose 10 pounds. However, just like I said, once I stopped with the shakes and started trying to eat real food, I gained the weight back plus about 5 more after that. I didn't lose weight and consistently keep it off until I started logging real food and exercising. There are lots of "short cut promises" available, but no real short cuts to fat loss. Do the work...learn about calories and macros...exercise...and you will have much better success.

Rather buy whey protein, gives you the option to add carbs or have a shake without carbs.

I've been doing this since April 2013. My first month I used Slim Fast shakes for breakfast and sometimes a snack because I wasn't sure what I was going to eat, plus the chocolate and sugar in the Slim Fast gave me something sweet every day (I was cutting out sugar and junk food because I couldn't moderate myself). They helped me transition to a healthier diet. I cut the Slim Fast after 30 days and replaced them with steel cut oats and apples for snacks because of the high sugar (18 units per shake) plus the shakes are expensive over time (about $7 for 4).

My opinion: they're fine short term or if you're traveling, but real food is so far superior -- less sugar, less expensive, more filling. Plus if you depend on these shakes all the time, what happens when you quit using them? You haven't learned how to eat and will probably gain the weight back.

nay. For so many reasons nay.
  • Hello, I started slim fast around a week or so ago and I have already lost 6 pounds
So I'd say it's a great move, especially short term, for example I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and want to feel bikini ready! also I believe slim fast gets you used to consuming less! So when you come of it, you will have self taught about calorie control and portion restriction, of course this is all personal to me and only my opinion, but irregardless I think anything is worth a shot! :) Good Luck  xx

I have just started slimfast. I love the shakes and would rather a chocolate one than actual food. I am using them in a slightly different way as I am doing 3 shakes and one high protein meal and a light snack later.
I exercise and I am fully aware of how to work out real meals in %. What I found lacking in real food was all the extra vitamins. I am hypothyroid and slim fast seems to have a pick up on my fatigue due to overloading the vitamins and minerals.

I have just brought enough to last me into the new year (120days) on 3 shakes a day. I don't get why people are on about cost. To me slimfast is a cost effective way to loose weight and actually save me money. A tub of power does 12 shakes, on offer they are like £3 each. Then milk is £1 for 2 litres. The cost of 3 shakes a day is a total of £1.13 and shakes are £0.375 each. So to people who say its more expensive than real food. Can you tell me how can get the same nutrition, vitamins and minerals for that cost?
