    If it's truly fat, then it's significant. If it's one pound the next day, it's water. I teach clients not to rely on the scale, but on how they look and how their clothes fit. That's when one can really tell if fat is being lost.

    Sometimes I lose "just one pound" and I get bummed. Then I find a can of soup in my pantry -- a can of soup weighs close to a pound -- and I carry it around in my pocket for a while. This reminds me that even a small weight loss can be significant when I don't have to carry it around anymore. And when I feel low that my weight loss has stalled and I still have so much to lose, I go to the pet store and find a 40-lb bag of dog food and carry that around the store. It helps keep things in perspective!
