Please do not ridde horses if you are 300lbs, there backs are not able to handle that weight.. If you feel like you can walk 5k go for it!! Good luck
Actually there are a lot of factors to consider: horse size, muscling, bone, age, fitness as well as rider size, experience, balance, etc.
I have not ridden lately because I had 2 kids back to back, but rode my horses regularly weighing 280. There were never problems or issues- and I even had chiropractic check-ups done regularly. My trainer has been encouraging me to get back out there as this is the longest riding hiatus I have had in my life.
Thanks for the PSA on behalf of horses, but as you can see there is a lot more to it than, "you are too fat, you will crush your horse."

I walked my first 5k a few months ago just after I had my baby. I did it with him in his stroller too. He was two months old at the time.
No shame and not lame at all if you want to walk it! Everyone does things at their own pace, and there's no reason for you not to go and enjoy yourself. There were a lot of older women and women who weren't comfortable running right with me the whole time, and we all had a great time! You might even make some new less-obnoxious friends while you're at it.

sorry but why would you want to be friends with someone that would call you lame for wanting to walk a 5k. Go out there and do it, all my weight loss has been through walking and all i could manage to start with was 15 minutes at a time, it will be so worth it for you so go for it and get better friends that will encourage you, not call you lame for wanting to change your life.

It's lame to not do your best, whatever that may be. Could mean you should run it in under 20 minutes, could mean you walk and take sit breaks!0

Most 5K's are done to raise money/awareness for some kind of issue/disease/etc. walking or running you are out there showing support and helping out the community.
Why would it be lame to walk it? Doing it is the important part, and any exercise is better than none.0 -

Nothing lame about walking the race. You're doing more than the people who stayed in bed! I'm also against wearing the race shirt at race day but that's a personal thing...the real etiquette you need to follow as a walker is start in the back. If you turn around and there are people behind you before you start...you're too far forward 8) (Unless they have an area for walkers to start in) In crowded races there's nothing worse for the runners than needed to zig zag around people walking! But I've never thought anyone walking was lame, be it at a race or just out on the trails.0

Not at all! I would not listen to your friends! Good for you for wanting to do a 5K, and your right to think about things like your joints in not wanting to run. And when you complete your 5K be proud! It's all about improving ourselves not beating other people.0

I walked a 5K because of an injury. Lots of people walk 5Ks....it doesn't make you any less of an athlete :-). I plan on walking another one in September (if my injury is better I will wog it lol)0

Once again, thanks for the encouragement. Your shared pictures are SO motivating!
I feel a bit like continuing to wait for the "right time" to do things will have me waiting forever. But just jumping in can be very motivating, encouraging me to keep at it.
Thanks for sharing the race tips. I will make sure that walking is ok and that I know pace time when I pick a race. If I can hoof it in the hills with a 20 min average for 4.5 miles I would think I can shave time off that on the flat, for less time. But, we shall see. I would definitely do the best job I could. I figured to start at the back, nobody needs to pass me!
I am not in the Bay, but north of it. It will take planning to get to just about any race- but I think that is worth it, too.0 -
Nothing lame about it! Walking is great exercise. Even if one isn't overweight, walking instead of running a 5k can be fantastic.0

Your friend is lame. When I started doing 5k's, I walked. Lots of people do. And GOOD FOR YOU for wanting to do it. My sister walked a 5k over the weekend and it was quite the accomplishment for her. Go and do it and have a good time.0

Don't let your friends bring you down. Do what you feel comfortable doing. Running is difficult and if you aren't ready to do it you won't stick with it.0

Do it! Just be aware that some races are more walker friendly than others. I always look at race websites or races I'm not familiar with and compare last years results with my average time to see where I'd stack up. More times than not, there appear to be tons of walkers. But I have come across a few where everyone ran a 12min/mile or faster so as a walker, you might not want to sign up for something like that. But trust me, most of the 5K races I've seen online and actually raced in are very walker friendly. The best part about 5Ks is that many are built around fun themes, so they're meant to be fun or raise awareness. The fast runners can take off running ahead and try for that new PR, while the rest can jog or walk and just enjoy the morning. You are by no way lame. I started out walking a few 5Ks (and still do depending on the people I go with), and I can walk it in around 52 minutes. Now I run/walk them in about 32. Trying to get faster without killing myself. I've already graduated to 10Ks which I can do in 75-80 minutes, and just starting to train to attempt a half marathon for early next year mainly just to see if I can do it. But just in case, I'm looking for halfs with a generous time limit of 4 hours although the plan is to finish in 3.
I've heard the Bay to Breakers is fun, maybe sort of on the line of our Crescent City Classic I did this past March. Many people (in costume) took 2 hours or more to finish the 10K race, mainly because it was one big drinking party. Haha.0 -

Every 5k I've done has a considerable amount of walkers. It's not lame at all!
In fact, even the half marathons I've done have a chunk of walkers.....which I think is pretty amazing because I don't think I could stand walking that long even though I can run it. Also, I've seen race walkers that can lap some runners (race walking being a specific type of walking, not just people who walk the race).0 -
Walk it, skip it, crawl it, prancercise it, just do it! Have fun and feel proud when you're done. I'm guessing the "lame" calling friend will be home, on the couch, eating ice cream?0

Definitely do NOT give up...walk, run, crawl...whatever makes YOU feel good. The one 5K I did years ago...I walked most of it. I have some issues with one of my feet, I had club foot when I was born and had to have surgery so running could be a problem. If the doctor won't ok running, I'm not giving up on doing 5K's...I will just look for ones like Fun Walk/Runs...

Don't be silly. If your comfortable walking, do the walk. If you can run next year do the run. The important thing is to participate and get the level of exercise that is appropriate for you -- not for your buddies.0
