Lifting while wearing HRM question

I wore my new HRM (Polar FT40) at the gym while lifting, and was surprised by the amount of calories it said I burned. For example, 2 sets of 5 deadlifts= 44 calories. Can that be right? Seems high for such a short amount of time. I know that HRM's are typically for steady state cardio, but my thinking is that it goes by your HR, so it should work for lifting too, or am I wrong?

It really depends how much you're deadlifting at the time and how much strain you're putting on your body. For example, deadlifting 10 lbs vs 80 lbs is going to be much less taxing on your body.

If you're lifting with intensity and weight, I wouldn't be surprised.

165 lbs. My HR was 174 immediately after I was done.
