Why am I more hungry after eating breakfast?

So today was my first official day of eating right and I had a piece of whole wheat toast with one fried egg for breakfast. I found now that I am experiencing hunger pangs 4 hours later after drinking 3 glasses of water and a handful of almonds at work. Is this happening because my metabolism kicked in after eating breakfast (which I normally do not have)? Should I focus on a slightly bigger snack between 8am and noon? Any advice on getting over these pre-lunch hunger pangs would be appreciated! I am not too worried but I definitely want to be comfortable at work.

You should be eating every 3-4 hours, so your hunger is to be expected! I eat breakfast around 6:30, (bigger) snack around 9, another (small) snack around 11:30 and then lunch at 1. Drink lots of water and make sure you're getting enough protein + fiber in during breakfast because that's the key to staying fuller for longer!

It really is trial and error and you have to give your body time to adjust to your eating changes! Good luck!

Because your fueling the fire! lol eating breakfast gets your metabolism going so you get hungry shortly after because you have burned up all your breakfast and your body needs more fuel. Its a good thing :) I eat again 2-3 hours after breakfast. You could even eat a little more for breakfast if you wanted to :) If you want to stay fuller longer add in some more protein, egg whites are super lox cal and full of good stuff, I dont like pure egg white so I mix one whole egg with 1 or 2 more whites :)
  • You might want to try to eat more for breakfast. From what I've been told, you lose weight faster and feel full for longer if you make breakfast your highest calorie meal of the day!

You probably need to eat MORE!!! 300-400 calories for breakfest and possibly more depending on you caloric needs. I eat 300-400calories for breakfest lunch and dinner. I eat about 3-4 hours and have snacks in there at about 100-200 calories. Eat more hun and it should be fine :-)

Maybe it's not enough protein. Try adding a cup of low fat yogurt or a slice of turkey bacon. Or add something with more bulk to it like an apple or some oatmeal.
  • Maybe a little larger breakfast, morning snack, or both could help. It's only your first day, and getting the right portions at the right time for your body will take some tweaking on your part. Fiber and protein will keep you full longer they say, so make sure you get that. I like kashi cereal for breakfast, and sometimes I won't be hungry for my snack. Lately I been having oatmeal, boiled egg, and milk, then a banana at snacktime does me good. Rumor is too, that you want to eat most of your carbs/calories in the AM to sustain your energy through the day. So, there's some ideas, nothing definitive cause nobody knows what exactly will work for you and your body. Have fun with it and good luck :)

THANK YOU EVERYONE! I love the quick and detailed responses on this site. Definitely feeling the support. I think I will try to eat a slightly bigger breakfast and also incorporate more fiber into my diet earlier in the day. I am happy that my body is responding though! It is a good sign that I am hungry and ready for more fuel.

I am really excited to work out later today. After joining this site I have made getting healthy a hobby in a few short days. It is almost as if the gym can't get here soon enough.

    Thanks again!

I can last a good 5 hours if needed on a breakfast of 1/2c (dry wt) otameal fixed with water, cinn, nutmeg and sweetner and a couple hard boiled eggs. I also have 3 cups of coffee in the morning with low fat half and half. Comes in at just over 400 cals.

Lunch and dinner are 300-400 cals and that leaves me with a few hundred cals to sneak in as needed for snacks. I eat something every 3.5 to 4 hours up until bedtime.

I'd say try out different things and see what works for you. I stick to a lighter breakfast because I get just as hungry later with a big breakfast as I do with a small one. There's enough milk protein in my home made mocha and fiber in my oatmeal to keep me satisfied for awhile. A bigger breakfast, with eggs and whatever else, is somewhat wasted on me.

Being hungry four hours later is natural, so I'd say go ahead and fit a snack in there.
  • Great job! It's funny how exercising can become addictive... you don't feel yourself unless you work out :-) I eat A LOT for breakfast as well. Usually 500-600 calories including my coffee, then I have 300-400 for the other meals and a few low cal snacks. I always have peanut butter for breakfast so that really keeps me full and satisfied! Good luck
