Are meal replacement shakes like slim fast healthy?

I see the little label that boasts about all the vitamins and minerals so would you guys consider them healthy? I like to incorporate one into my day as a snack sometimes and I feel awesome

I think they're ok. I wouldn't have them every day, but that's just because I don't personally prefer them.

Well, it's health-ish. Those vitamins and minerals are added, so they're good, but not as good as natural. But incorporating one is not a bad idea, provided that you still eat a variety of unprocessed foods. You know, it's always better to eat an apple than pop a vitamin pill, but if you don't have an apple at hand, a pill is better than no vitamin at all.

I don't think you can call them healthy as they are high in sugar. But they aren't the worst thing you can have. I did slim fast for a couple of weeks (while they were half price) and I found the shakes more filling for breakfast than my usual porridge!

You can get all the vitamins and minerals from real food. Also worth noting, eating real food is a sustainable practice.

No they're seriously not, think about it this way: "Is this sustainable?", if the answer is no then it's also not healthy. Unnecessarily large amount of sugar, and fru fru filler. They're actually pretty bad health wise. Better off getting in a good habit of preparing meals

Real food? A sustainable healthy lifestyle? Get out with your common sense approach!

I don't see a problem with using it as a snack. But actually calling it a meal is probably not the best idea. There's no reason to drink shakes as food unless you have your jaw wired shut or can't consume whole food.

    Stop labeling foods as healthy/unhealthy.

    It's silly.

I have Celiac Disease and if I am in a flare and can't eat I will do Ensure to at least stay hydrated and get some vitamins in. So I think they are good if it's all you can do or if you are a frail elderly person in the nursing home and need something to give you some calories/ nutrients. Otherwise food is better.

sadly it took me much longer than I'm willing to admit before I got the joke. I'm definitely not running on all cylinders yet this morning.

As for my contribution to the actual discussion...

I, too, have considered meal replacement shakes as I wake up early enough as it is in the morning, I don't have time to cook breakfast so I generally eat cereal with toast or a bagel.... both which leave me rather hungry about an hour before my scheduled lunch break (which is at 9:30 or 10 AM... quite an early lunch lol). I've debated cooking scrambled eggs in bulk and freezing them so I can pop them in the microwave while I'm in the shower... do scrambled eggs freeze well? I feel like they'd be more filling... and less... carby
