Something with protein, carbs and fats.
If you're new, you don't need to "optimise" anything, just eat healthily and eat for energy.
Personally I like heavy compound lifts 3x a week, working the full body (similar to the Starting Strength program). I think for the ultimate newbies, and this is just my opinion, that a program like that is best. Mostly because of the "newbie gains" phenomenon... but do whatever you feel most comfortable with, and do it consistently.0 -
Starting Strength is awesome. I did it for about six months and got my Bench + Squat + Deadlift total from a starting point of around 400 lbs to around 600 lbs before I switched to 5/3/1.0

Have you seen a decent increase in your lifts since switching to 5/3/1?
I've been doing SS since just before December, and I keep progressing on 3x5. The only difference is I've gone from deadlifting 2x a week to a variation of the PPNP with BB rows and hang cleans instead of power cleans, because my home gym is too small to power clean in.
My progression is slower than I imagine it would be if I could power clean, but I'm not worried.0 -
I haven't done 5/3/1 as continuously/strictly as a did Starting Strength, mainly because that coincided with the same time I started doing Crossfit (which I also really enjoy, but is better for Olympic Lifting rather than Powerlifting). However, my powerlifting total is now up to 620 (140 bench, 175 squat, and 305 deadlift). The thing I did prefer about Starting Strength is how much squatting there was, which I think might be part of the reason my squat really hasn't progressed.0
