    if not hungry-> workout first
  • Hey,

Funny I was thinking this last night. I found the following article.

    http://m.mensfitness.com/nutrition/what-to-eat/breakfast-before-or-after-a-workout

I just went to the gym this morning and thought I would feel bad without anything in my belly but I felt great. Better then days I had oats or fruit for breakfast.

Now I'm sitting down for a well earned scrambled eggs..

I need a little time to digest in order to really work.

If this is a question relating to IF, probably want to focus on that aspect. Otherwise, it's completely personal preference.

Comes down strictly to personal preference, I eat a big breakfast (1400 calories) an hour before I hit the gym at 7 a.m. but if I work out in the the evenings then I prefer to eat after...... Best of Luck

I personally don't like to eat much if I am going to work out.. I found out that it makes me slower and sometimes tired! I thought it would be the other way around... but it is not!

I've been wondering about this (only started exercising 2 weeks ago). I'm trying to lose weight but I usually like to eat beforehand so I feel like I have a bit of energy. I prefer not being on an empty stomach for prolong amount of time, otherwise I won't want to eat.

This is what I've found on the ausport.gov.au website http://www.ausport.gov.au/ais/nutrition/factsheets/competition_and_training/eating_before_exercise

"To make a decision about eating before your workout, it is useful to consider the goals of the session. If your primary goal is to improve performance, have something to eat before exercise. If your primary goal is weight loss, and you will do the same amount of exercise regardless of whether you eat or not, save your meal until after the session".

I work out late at night, so it's always after I eat. I think it just depends on what you prefer or what time of the day you work out.

I work out after work, and I eat after I work out. Just personal preference. I've tried working out after eating, and I just end up feeling sluggish and icky (that's a medical term).

    It depends.

I usually have a light breakfast, then exercise, then eat something more substantial.

Whatever works for you is best though.

I personally rather eat after a workout. For one I tend not to over eat after a good workout and on a light tummy I can get a good workout in.

I eat after so I can have a massive feast
  • I think it's just up to you. Try both and see which one you like. I personally can't workout without eating first (in the morning). I feel super lightheaded and can't make it through my workouts. And when I eat first, I never have that problem. I see others on here feel sick when they do eat first so it's just whatever is right for your body.

Whatever your preference. Mine depends on schedule. Usually that means fasted.

I have to knock out my workout first thing in the morning (4am) so it's just a big glass of water and off I go. I follow up the workout with more water and eat when I get to work which is ~1 hour after. It works well for me and I am far from hungry, I know I need to "feed the machine" so I try and make good choices and get something in there soon after.

I would, no doubt, have a different approach if I worked out at lunch or after work.

I exercise first unless I am just starving. tomorrow is my weigh in day so I will wake up and exercise before weighing. This works for me.

Exercise first, eat after. Can't do jumping jacks otherwise...

I eat after, too. I know food stays in the stomach for several hours during mechanical breakdown and I don't like feeling full while I'm jogging.

If I'm training in the afternoon then it's after lunch and before dinner.
    Or I might train fasted.
Or if I'm cycling then I eat before, during and afterwards.

Summary - eat and train when it suits you.

    I'll counter that with this.

I usually work out first thing in the morning, which often involves a run. I have to run on an empty stomach, otherwise I'll be sick in someone's bushes. If your stomach can handle it, go for it and eat ahead of time. If not, then don't.
