Hi I am new to this site and getting back to controlling my overeating habits. Apart from the eating I am struggling with trying to dring 8 glasses of water per day. I can cope with about 4 but then get fed up with the taste. I put a bit of fruit squash in one so that gets me to 5. Even when I am thirsty I struggle with drinking water. I have a soda a day - diet of course but 8 glasses seems unreachable at the moment.

I found that ice water made it taste better and was easier for me to drink. Also, the crystal light (or walmart brand) water flavorings were great options for me to up my water while replacing soda. Hope that helps!

I know what you mean - before i was diagnosed with Diabetes II, two weeks ago, there would be days when I didn't have one drop of water!!! all soda! I am surprised I am still alive.

I got a Leave the Paper, Take the Cup™ Insulated Travel Cup, please check it out - I got mine of www.animalrescuesite.com (they have many cool styles).

it comes with a straw that locks into place with a the screw on lid! and I fill it up and because i am dinking through a straw i found myself effortlessly drinking on average 50 ounces of water a day! now yesterday was an off day for me but that's okay! compared to my dehydrated state of being I was in before.

This site of course also helps. Sometimes someone will post --- drink your water challenge! and they will challenge everyone to drink a full glass of water at that moment. I thought was so helpful - because I was busy working and when I saw that challenge -- drank down another glass and was off to refill for my next challenge!!!

I think I babbled but - purchasing something as cheap and simple as a "eco-friendly, that provided 14 bowls of dog food to shelter dogs, insulated cup could make me drink all that water! BTW it has been about 15 days since I have drank a soda and I truly truly don't miss it.

Don't forget to do a search in the Nutrition posts for drinking water - many helpful tips.

    Take care, Melody

hey i struggle to drink lots of water too, and i know this might sound silly but what i have found works for me is to drink it out of a bottle instead of a glass (straight from the tap)
i use an empty cordial bottle 1 litre, fill it up in the morning when i get up and take a good few gulps out of it, then set in down, when i go to get my breakfast i take a few more gulps (before eating) then the same before snaks, lunch and dinner, i dont know why it works but it does, i drink this plus my five cups of tea (one with each meal a little skimmed milk/no sugar) and then one to two glasses of cordial after my evening meal , it just seems to go down a lot easier and doesnt make it such a task , then at least you know you have had at least 1 litre of plain water a day, (if nothing or besides whatever else you drink)
    try it and see,

    Interesting Water Facts

We all know that water is important, but I’ve never seen it described like this before!!!!

75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. ( Likely applies to half the world population). In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for Hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of dieters studied in a U- Washington study. Lack of water, the 1# trigger of daytime fatigue. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should everyday???

I have trouble drinking enough water too, and I actually like how it tastes. It just seems an excessive amount to me. What I do now is fill up one of my husband's pint glasses and just kind of sip it. I fill it up a few times a day with ice and water and at least get seven glasses that way. Sometimes, I add the juice from a wedge of lemon or lime and that seems to help. Squash is good too, but I don't drink it, because I try to watch my sugar since lots of my family are diabetic.
  • glad to see alot of us are not alone in having issues drinking our daily recomended water! i usually drink ice water, it just tastes better but i also read somehwere that it helps you burn more calories  now what i also do at times is but in a crystal light or something like that just to add flavor . also remember that when you exercise you NEED water. but i would highly suggest ice water.

good luck with this. hope everybody's ideas are helpful to you.

I keep a jug of (sugar free) squash in my fridge door, and when ever I pass I fill up my glass. I don't like plain water, so as long as I log the cals in my squash (next to nothing) then I feel as if I'm doing better than all the tea and coffee I used to drink before. Tea and coffee used to be the only thing I ever drank. I NEVER drunk water with or without squash in it, so this has to be better than that. Right?
  • I have a 1.5ltr bottle of water next to me.

I constantly sip during the day, and by the end of the working day it's gone, then I head home and do the same.

Usually drink about 3ltr's of water a day. Which is good for me as a few weeks ago I was drinking 4ltr's of Pepsi Max a day and hardly any water. Good change I think :)

I spoke to a nutritional specialist to help me with my diet and I have to drink 108 oz of water a day. I can get to 3 liters and quit. That 1 gallon a day is still out of my reach!

Maybe it is a mental thing, but I have noticed that when I can't see whats in the glass I drink more. I am using a thermal travel type tumbler with a lid and straw. I fill it with ice and water and off I go. It even goes on the headboard at night. I have small magnets on my fridge just above the water dispenser and I move one from right to left when I refill my tumbler. The tumbler itself holds 24 oz, I figure I fill it to maybe 22, so I need to fill it 5 times a day. With a clear tumbler I was averaging 3-4 fills, with the dark blue one I am getting 5-6. See?? I'm mental! :drinker:

I was never a big water drinker before either. I could go all day w/o having any. For the past few months now, I've been filling my water bottle w/ fresh lemons & ice... way more tollerable to drink.
  • i used to HATE drinking water. i started forcing myself to drink it, slowly adding a glass everyday. i now drink over 3 liters a day (usually 4!)- i find my body is CRAVING water now. its definitely annoying to have to use the bathroom more often but i know how good it is for me. it honestly makes me feel so much better and more alert! ice water is the best!

One way to increase your water intake is to drink it through a straw. Don't sip when your body says that you are thirsty, because if you are getting that signal, it means that you are already dehydtrated. Just sip it all day long through that straw. You can actually drink more that way because you may not even realize how much you are having when you do that.

Also, do some intense exercise...especially some interval cardio training...and you will see that your body craves more and more water. If you drink other things like diet soda, you will not be able to perform that exercise as efficiently, and you will feel even more thirsty than if you had been drinking water.

I used to not drink ANY pure water in a day. I was drinking sodas, fruit juices, etc. The thought of drinking water repulsed me. When I started to exercise, I knew that I had to have water before, during, and after the workout, so I did. But then I decided to replace the other stuff with healthier drinks until finally I gave up the other stuff altogether (I still have it as a "cheat" every now and then). I have noticed increased energy, better athletic performance, better sleep when I go to bed, better moods with less swings, and less bloating!

Sounds weird, but drinking MORE water makes you LESS bloated. This can instantly make you look thinner, and the scale will actually drop for most people about 2-5 pounds.

I didn't even realize how dehydrated my body was...until I started drinking only water.

when I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes it was CRITICAL that I get enough water and not eat too many calories. I dropped the pop completely ( I don't drink diet bc I hate the way it tastes and no effin way I was going to expose my baby to those chemicals!). I also started drinking water when I was hungry. If that didnt' kill the hunger with in a half an hour, then i would have some type of healthy snack. If you are not on salt restrictions adding a lightly salted snack will make you thirsty.

Also tap water is icky, blech. I find I love distilled water. It tastes sweet to me, almost like there's sugar in it!. A good compromise is water that has been run through a 2 or 3 stage filter. Pur is the one I use bc they donate water cleaning funds to 3rd world countries. There's also something called true lime and true lemon, if you add that when you are bored of the taste it helps and it's no calorie, basically it's a powdered form of the peel of the lime/lemon. If I need electolites or can afford calories I have either a vitamin water 50 cal a serving, don't remember servings/bottle, or smartwater which has no calories.

I keep a bottle on my desk at work. Whenever I want a "brain-break"" I have to take a drink of water first. I think it is about 750 ml's which means I am drinking 2 - 3 litres of water at work every day. Plus I only buy water for home, no juice, pop or lemonaide. If we are thirsty, we have to drink water because that is all that there is!

    Things that help me:

1--Always drink ice water. I put a 20 oz bottle of water in the freezer for a few hours to make it slushy.
2--Keep a bottle of water in the fridge, every time you walk through, take a few long swigs. I usually get about 40 oz this way between going in and out of the house, stopping when I'm cooking dinner or running in to get something
3--Replace your meal drinks with water
4--Flavored water--Sugar free kool aid packets give water flavor for 10 calories.

    8 glasses is unnecessary.

I'd focus on weaning off the soda before I worried about chugging water you don't want or need.
