I think they can be helpful in extreme cases.
For example if someone is suffering from constiparion so extreme, the pressure it causes on other organs causes risk of internal injury...
Or if they have buildup of toxic chemicals which are causing painful symptoms due to recycling of stagnant waste matter.

Or, if someone finds out they have been ingesting poisonous matter which is having a negative effect due to a bad reaction in the colon.

But for most of us healthy folk, they will probably do more harm than good. Change in diet is a better option for colon health.
You don't see a colonic specialist for this, you see a gastroenterologist.

A waste of time & money.
When you get old like me, you have the privilege of having a camera shoved up your colon to look for the onset of colon problems.
Polyps are removed and the colon wall is cauterized while the polyps are still benign.
I usually watch the TV screen for the first few inches, then the drugs do their thing, and I miss the remainder of the 'show.'
My wife tells me that the view highly resembles the pic that someone posted earlier.
And no gunk is clinging to the walls.

Colonics are really UNhealthy, IMHO. Yes, a few people may people NEED them, but only once, and using them as a weight loss method, especially ever 3-6mths, hack even yearly, is dangerous. Your skin in that area is EXTREMELY sensitive and being exposed to elements and materials that it shouldn't be. Just eat right.

Sounds really stressful, expensive, harsh, humiliating, etc etc etc.
I would opt to take a fiber supplement and drink some extra water.
    No. Thank-you:)

There's no buildup to remove. The only thing that gets removed is the food being processed through your digestive system and the gut bacteria that keeps your system functioning properly. It's a huge waste of time, money, and gut bacteria that you have to recolonize anew.

This is what a colon looks like after a colon prep (not a colonic)

    Where's the buildup?
A colon prep cleans you out thoroughly. I was 16 years old and had to do one of those. I assure you if there was build up in there, a prep will make you squeaky clean.
And yes, people who have a problem in their gut due to stress, improper eating etc, can have residue up in there and it is VERY uncomfortable for them, they really seek out a solution.

What's all this talk about "gunk" and "build up"? That's not good, folks. Go see a gastroenterologist instead of wasting precious time, money, and health.

Someone mentioned extreme constipation putting pressure on organs. Chronic constipation is also an issue for a medical professional.

poor example. this colon has been subjected to possibly the most dreadful two words ever uttered.. "bowel prep"

clears everything out so the docs can get a nice clear view of the horizon.

I had no idea OP until now but I was born to bring this movie quote to the world!

    Serge: Do you do colonics?
    Axel: Excuse me?
    Serge: Do you do colonics?
    Axel: Colonics? No. Never....
Serge: ...it's my new favoreet thing!
Axel: Oh, you did the colonics?
Serge: Oh I gotta tell you what it's like, because they stick a hose up inside you...
    Axel: I know.
Serge: You've got to understand. Out comes... a candy bar from when you were 5!
Axel: Get the f outta here!
    Serge: No I cannot!

A CANDY BAR? You are one twisted person - but you knew that already....

I have had these before. They aren't pleasant when they're in progress, but you'll feel wonderful afterwards. I don't know what the benefit would be for a healthy person with regular BMs, though. Usually older people and people with IBS (like me) get the most from hydrotherapy.
