Say you want to do a workout routine with free weights ---say doing a circuit twice --- and there apparently is a high demand for some specific ones. Is it better to collect all the weights you want to do for you routine, complete the routine, and put them all back, or take one at a time, and increase the chance that you'll have to wait for a long time for someone to finish using it?

Take what you're using, use it, put it back, repeat. Hogging weights is 1) rude and 2) dangerous because it causes a tripping hazard.0

I think it's rude to hoard more than 2 pairs of dumbbells, or keeping weights that you aren't going to use in the next few minutes. Try to learn alternatives - for example, holding plates instead of dumbbells.. or squatting with a single heavy dumbbell instead of 2 light ones. Creativity comes in handy here.
If you do hoard a lot of freeweights, at least let others share if they ask to.0 -
Pet hate: guys that circuit around the machines like flies on ****. Lat pull 5 reps, to low cable row 5 reps, to assisted dips , 5 reps, dude you are taking up 3 machines at once. Or am I being a ****head?0

LOL i do this sometimes but i do more than 5 reps so anyone has time to cut in while i am on something else. Also , i go quite early so im usually not hogging.0 -
Yep circuit training when it's busy is a bit of a no no for me. Why not try doing supersets, I often do these when it's busy which I think are fairly acceptable.0

Gym etiquette is VERY important. Take what you need for a set, use them and put them back even if it means you wait a bit. Go on to something else and don't let the guys push you around or hog the weights. You have just as much right to use them as they do! This happens to me several times a week and I have to get ugly sometimes.0

This is actually a great idea. I had only done this once awhile ago, mainly because I was working with a trainer at the time, with her taking all the weights needed for the routine, and I was replicating said routine on my own. A girl asked if she could use the weights and I did let her take them. I guess its kind of sad that at the time it didn't cross my mind that what I was doing could be considered rude. But I see that now. Thanks for the creative suggestions to use other things besides the weights0 -
Gym etiquette 101: Don't steal someone's dumbbells.
Happened to me today.......had my dumbbells hid under my stinky towel, beside my gym bag...during a cardio class....the whole class left the enclosed room to go workout for 15 min in the open gym. Skank swiped my dumbbells while I was gone. I know it was a girl because the room next door was full of Yoga women with the same dumbbells. The token 2 males in the class had bigger weights. And no, there weren't anymore of "my size" cuz I went all over looking for an extra pair. I was pissed. And no I can't use bigger weights due to injury.0 -
Were they your personal set of dumbbells or the gyms? If the latter, you weren't using them anyway.
Of course, I have a solution for you. Go to the free weight rack and use the plates. I am guessing you are not using heavy weights, so, the 5 and 10 pound plates are easy to use and plentiful.
When I was rehabbing my shoulder, I had to do this, because some "skank" as you put it, was hoarding the 5 pound dumbbells...for a half an hour!0 -
I believe it is wrong to hog the weights. IF you are using them constantly then that is one thing but if you have several sizes put aside for just you and you don't let anyone else use them during that time that is wrong. It's hard enough to find weights as it is in some gyms because so many people want to use them but then to have someone hog it that is different. I do super sets. bicep curls with lunges, lat raises with side lunges ect. IF I am doing squats or lunges and can go with a single weight I double what I would use for each hand and only use one so that someone else doing the same can use the other.
Also, just keep in mind that its WRONG to steal someone else's weights if they are still using it. Even if they put it down for 5 minutes to do lunges or squats without that weight. ASK first don't just assume they are done.0 -

Nope. You're not alone. One station at a time, people.0 -
i normally take what im going to us right away and the one i want to use after that and thats it. hogging all the weights is rude. you can also use alternative to weights.0

Please don't be a hoarder.
There's a woman I used to call "Farrah" at the gym (due to her seriously outdated fluffy, curly mullet-esque 'do) who used to have at least 2 sets of weights plus an additional barbell, plus a yoga mat, yoga ball and weighted ball or kettle bell, then would keep them all in a corner tucked away while she was ACROSS THE FREAKING FLOOR ON A MACHINE! I once politely asked her if I could use one of the 10 pieces of equipment she obviously was not using, and she replied "I'm using it".
Do NOT be Farrah. Thank god she moved gyms. 'Cause I was about to erupt all over her.0 -

Yep, hogging weights or machines while doing circuits in a crowded gym is rude.0 -

I wouldve taken them as well.

Since the weights are there for everyone and you were not using them sounds like she did nothing wrong. Especially, if you were not even in the same room and taking a cardio class.
So, doesn't that make you the skank? :laugh:0 -

My class returned to the same room to finish up....with me minus my dumbbells. The two rooms are separate classes and her room holds about 35 pairs of same weights. So she came into my class to swipe my dumbbells and returned to her own class. She is the skank. I am no skank. In future, I shall then have to carry my dumbbells with me when the class leaves the room to go into open gym so I know I will have them to use when our class returns from open gym to finish up in the cardio room.
edited to add: And my class is a cardio class but we use weights. (IE Tabata-type athletic classes). Her class is a Yoga class that also uses weights. The rooms are called "cardio" because they are enclosed. Get it?0 -

Not obnoxious at all. There are 35+ pairs of same weights. The pair I use are the Barbie weights as I have an injury. Not being able to use my light-weight set to finish up my class did not put me in the best of spirits. I still maintain that the chick who came out of HER class, to get UNDER my stinky towel & bag, to STEAL my set of weights to use in her yoga class is a skank.0 -

Barbie weights are cheap enough. If you have special needs you may want to invest a few bucks in your own. Buy a different color than what the gym has and make sure you prominently label them. That way you don't have to horde and "skanks" don't dig under your towel for your carefully hidden weights.0 -

That is an excellent idea. I may have to check into that. Tho I would not call it "hoarding". If it were "hoarding", then the 30+ people in my class would be weight-hoarders also. Since we all have hand-weights we are using. Mine just happens to be a smaller size of weight. I never saw anyone else in my class lose their weights to the other class.0 -
Now that I've been going to the gym pretty regularly, I've noticed something. I'm literally the only woman who stays in the weights section, at least at during the time I'm there. For the most part the guys just go about their daily routines but I notice that some of them kinda laugh in my direction, giving off a vibe that I shouldn't be there. Those a-holes.
But whatever I usually just concentrate on my own stuff. I think though on a number of occasions guys have mistakenly thought I've been checking them out because I'm looking at them as they lift to try to help me with my own lifting form. There are two men who never fail to re-rack their weights though, and leave them lying around everywhere, its so annoying! RAWR0 -
I am fairly new to the gym. I plan to be very flexible when it comes to my routine. So lets say the leg curl is being occupied, and the gym junkies are floating around it - then I will do squats instead or leg press. Substitute/being flexible with your routine will help0

My sincere advice is that you spend more time lifting and less time mind reading while you're at the gym. Your lifting will improve over time but your mind reading abilities will remain tainted by your own insecurities0 -
I have a max 2 pair of dumbells at any time, but only when it queit, I use 1 pair for 2 sets for warm up then the 2nd set for my lifts. If its busy I will use my warm up set put them back and pick up my lift set. I once had a run in with a guy who was hoarding 4 sets of dumb bells, all in series i.e he had the 20kg, 22, 24 and 26 kg bells. I needed to use the 22 that he currently wasnt using, the other 22s we're in people hands being used, I asked if I could use it, only for 3 sets but said nope using them so i had to settle for the 20. then procedded to keep an eye on him during set, and at no point during my set did he even touch the 22.
So moral of the story don't horde weight that you are not currently using or may use in 15 minutes time, people pay their membership just the same as you do so they have every right to use unused equipment.0 -

I highly doubt anyone is "kinda laughing in your direction". If anything, women garner more respect than men in the weights section since so few of them are brave enough to do so. Unless you are doing something overtly stupid or dangerous I doubt anyone cares even in the slightest.0 -
I just avoid the drama of the gym and do my workouts at home. I bought some really great DVD's that offer challenging workouts and I use my own resistance bands and weights at home. Plus it's easier on my wallet. Don't have to waste the gas, no travel time, and I can do it whenever I want. And I don't have to deal with rude people. LOVE my home workouts!0

I think it's fairly rude to do circuits in a busy gym in of itself.0

Just saw this yesterday: dude deadlifts on the rack at the busiest time of day at our gym (there's an oly platform behind you and only two squat racks, man, come on!) then runs to the leg press without unloading his plates off the bar, then he'd get lost somewhere in the machines room for five minutes, then come back and do a couple more DL reps, leg press, leave the weight room... This went on for a few rounds before I took over the rack and started squatting while he was away. Dude comes back and stares at me with this confused look in his face like "Hey, I was using that!"
Some people... :grumble:0
