I used to feel guilty for eating a whole banana

Back when I first joined Weight Watchers, I lost weight using their Selections plan.

Selections were units of food in different categories. You consulted your list of selections to see what fit in each, and into your day. For instance, being a woman in weight loss phase, I would have 2 Milks, 2 Fruits, 3 or more Vegetables, 2 Fats, etc etc.

It was calorie counting, but not - each Fruit was equivalent to about 50-60 calories so you could have a cup and half of strawberries, but only 2 T of raisins.

Every time I wanted a banana, I had to figure out what to do with the other half. I remember trying to pawn it off on others or saving it in the freezer for a future smoothie (if I remembered it was there).

Now I just eat the damn banana!

What kind of "food fears" did you develop from dieting??

  • Fruit in general seems to get a bad rap from many fad diets. It's about as natural as it gets, just like vegetables and whole grains! Yes, it has sugar and carbs, but it's NATURAL!!!

Potatoes. They are really good for you if you don't smother them in garbage.

Glucose, fructose, etc., are the same, regardless of whether they come from natural sources or not.

Nuts! Everyone always tells you that nuts are fattening...
At that point in my life I had cut almost all fat out of my diet. I didn't know it then, but it was what kept me so hungry and irritable.

When I started counting calories and recording my meals, I realized that I needed more fat.
It seemed gross at first and I felt so guilty and dirty to eat olive oil, egg yolks, avocados, almond butter...

I'm totally done with that nonsense now though, and I feel so much better!

It is hard to unlearn choosing fat free foods.

Regular food tastes better and is better for you... but that's not what you're taught.

Oh and cheese. Cheese is so good.

What about fiber and water content?

Are you saying corn syrup is the same as a banana?

I also avoided most fats. I'd get fat free cottage cheese, skim milk, reduced fat peanut butter (helllooooooo added sugar and salt)...things that iust don't have to be reduced. The calorie difference is easy to adjust to and I'm no longer cheating myself out of flavor.

    I also avoided bananas. But...yum!
