1/4 C Old Fashion Oats
1/4 C Skim Milk (or whatever you prefer)
1 container of Greek Yogurt (flavored is delicious also)
1 TBS of Flaxseed or Chia Seeds
Fruit or nuts if desired (I usually wait until the morning to add these ingredients)

Here's a peanut butter, banana, protein powder version. Not a low calorie meal, but it fills you up for quite a while, and it travels pretty easily.
1/2 cup rolled oats (steel cut don't get soft enough for my taste)
1/2 cup almond milk
1 container greek yogurt
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
2 Tbsp sugar-free banana pudding mix
2 Tbsp powdered peanut butter
1 Tbsp chia seeds0 -

Steel Cut oats are heartier, earthier and chewier than the rolled variety. I began eating them after watching an episode of Good Eats with Alton Brown where he explained the nutritional difference. To be short, steel cut are less processed therefore have more fiber. Like the difference between using raw potatoes to make mashed potatoes or using instant mashed. The more processed the easier the body converts the carbs to be stored.
Alton taught me to pan roast in dry fry pan the steel cut before using them. Either are delicious depending on how you dress them. But I now prefer steel cut and only used rolled oats for cookie recipes.

Hi BernadetteChurch,What exactly are steel cut oats? I'd assumed they were the American name for rolled oats, but that doesn't sound right now.
I use jumbo rolled oats, by the way. Can't stand the porridge oats that are just basically oat dust!
Steel cut oats are not rolled oats - as I mentioned above. Rolled oats are flattened so that the grain has been pancaked. Oats that have been 'steel cut' have been cut or sliced across the grain so the oats are cut into pieces about the same size and shape as cous cous.
I tried my first bowl this morning and they have a different texture to porridge made with rolled oats. They're a bit chewier.
I've only been able to find them in a health food shop in Australia.

Hi Ben.... you can order steel cut oats online at places like Amazon. Not sure how much they add to the price.0 -
Here's my go to recipe:
1/2 cup of rolled oats
1/2 cup of almond milk
1/2 cup of greek yogurt
sliced almonds
dried cranberries

Today I had:
1/3 cup Old Fashioned oats
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 cup toasted coconut/vanilla Greek yogurt
1 tbsp low sugar strawberry preserves

There are a load of variations. I just made the Rasberry Vanilla. The recipe from the website is:
•1/4 cup uncooked old fashioned rolled oats
•1/3 cup skim milk
•1/4 cup low-fat Greek yogurt
•1-1/2 teaspoons dried chia seeds
•1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
•1 tablespoon raspberry jam, preserves, or spread
•1/4 to 1/3 cup raspberries (cut each berry in half), or enough to fill jar
I used a Fage greek yogurt with the rasberry side car and frozen rasberries. My chia seeds didn't plump as much as I thought they would so maybe I needed more liquid - BUT, it was awesome.0 -

I make mine vegan.. it's really thick kinda like dough
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup almond milk
1 scoop sunwarrior vanilla protein
1 tbsp chia seeds
cinnamon

I eat 'overnight oatmeal' almost daily for breakfast. I found this site that has many different versions of 'overnight oatmeal'

I never knew. I just assumed people talking about overnight oats were talking about slow cooker oats. I do steel-cut oats in the slow cooker with just oats, water, milk, salt, and spices. It cooks while I'm sleeping, and in the morning I add fruit and/or nuts and/or sweetener to my bowl. I usually make enough fr the week, and warm up in the microwave after the first morning.

3/4-1 cup of 2% milk (depending how thick you like it, i like mine thick)
1 tsp cinnamon
2 packets splenda (i usually add this right before eating)
fruit of choice
i just started using walnuts and i have been experimenting with different fruits but so far have found i prefer peaches or bananas the best...
you can do just about anything with this. just be creative0 -

My current addiction:
60g Quacker Old Fashioned Oats
1 banana
dash of cinnamon and nutmeg
10g almonds or pecan pieces
1 cup Silk unsweetened Organic Milk0 -
They are little oat chunks (squareish). Look for some of the organic brands of cereals, like maybe Bob's Red Mill etc... They come out cooked as more of a porridge than regular oats. I have never tried the overnight way but since I have oats 364 days a year, I'll surely try it.0
