Almond milk - how long does it last once opened?

Hi all,

So i opened an almond milk a few weeks ago, left it in the fridge, and now i am not sure whether it is ok to drink or not?! since it's not dairy i am guessing it's ok? there is nothing on the carton about consuming within however many days/weeks once opened. thanku!

I drink it if it doesn't smell or taste funny. I've had a few half gallons get fermented so I threw them out. One didn't smell funny but tasted terrible and slightly like alcohol.
  • Thank you! I will smell and see!! if not...new carton for me :)

The kind I buy (Blue Diamond) expires 5 days after opening, so I would chunk it.

I wish they packaged it smaller. I only use 2-3 cups a week max.

I'd do a smell/taste test and if it seems ok then go for it.

I find soy milk lasts well over a week after opening (I've never tried to leave it more than 10 days).
  • Yeh i can't see how it will be any good to be honest as it has been in there a while! new lot for me i think :) thanks!

This is copied from the Almond Breeze Website 9-4-13:

How soon should I use Almond Breeze® after I open it?
After opening, REFRIGERATED Almond Breeze should be used within 7 days. SHELF STABLE Almond Breeze should be used within 7-10 days of opening. Because Almond Breeze does not contain preservatives, it is susceptible to spoilage after being opened for a prolonged period of time. Do not leave opened Almond Breeze unrefrigerated for an extended period of time. Storage at room temperature will shorten the shelf life and just like regular dairy milk and will spoil if left unrefrigerated too long. Blue Diamond does not recommend trying to extend the Refrigerated “Use By” or Shelf Stable “Best Before” time frame of Almond Breeze and Blue Diamond will not guarantee the quality of the product beyond this recommended time frame.

Can I drink Almond Breeze® beyond the ‘’Use By” or “Best Before” date?
No, for best quality we recommend consuming REFRIGERATED Almond Breeze before the “Use By” date and SHELF STABLE Almond Breeze before the “Best Before” date.

How can I tell if the product turns bad?
Almond Breeze® products have mild and pleasant odors. If your Almond Breeze does not look, smell or taste the way it should, it may be spoiled. Signs of spoilage include:
The carton looks abnormally bloated
When opened, product appears to be moldy, curdled and/or slimy
The color has changed
The product has an off odor or smells like sour milk
The product texture has changed and is not smooth and creamy

I keep mine refrigerated, but it usually lasts one week. For ANY kind of milk, my test is to pour a small amount in the sink and if there's any bits it's no good. Milk always smells off to me so I can't use the smell-test unfortunately. Also, if there are no bits, but when you pour it into a hot drink and it doesn't mix, as in it doesn't separate, I take that as it's off.
I also don't use a lot, just a splash for my coffee and wish they made smaller cartons. I prefer Almond Breeze but I'm fine with any brand they have in store.

I've gone as long as 2 weeks on one carton of almond milk (actually the almond/coconut blend - by Blue Diamond) and it was fine. Any longer than that and it goes down the drain.

I usually pour half of it into a freezer container and freeze it... haven't died yet!

I've had it last a couple weeks after opening.
If it smells fine and isn't chunky, go for it.

    THIS.

The shelf stable versions come in much smaller packaging. In fact you can even purchase them in singles. I buy 3-4 cartons at a time and have enough for about a month and a half, and I rarely have to throw any out.

This! I use blue diamond and it says that it only lasts 5 days after opening but i have used mine for up to 2 weeks without any problems. Maybe that is just me!
  • I drink coconut milk and I love it! Lasts much longer and tastes better to me anyways.

I usually try to use up almond/rice/soy milk stuff up within 7 days. I guess if it doesnt smell/taste/or look funny then its probably okay but I wouldn't drink it passed 2 weeks.

Read the label.... usually 5 to 7 days.

However, your best test is the taste test. Often items will keep longer than the suggested time.

I get Blue Diamond and Silk. They both typically last up to 2 weeks for me once they are opened. However, since I drink a lot more almond milk now...the carton doesn't usually last more than 4 days because I drink it all. Yum!

As a note, Chocolate Almond milk lasts longer for me, followed by Vanilla, then Plain. Plain usually lasts for me only about 1 to 1.5 weeks.

Same here. I have used it within 14 days without an issue.

I've used it past the "use within 7 days of opening" but I've noticed it kind of separates out...
My coffee will be one color when I pour it in and then, as it sits, it gets darker. And if I stir it up again, it gets lighter again. That's when I throw mine out.

I second buying the smaller shelf stable versions!
Once I'm through my next refrig. version, I think I'll stick with the shelf stable version

I've kept my almond milk almost 3 weeks with no sign of spoilage. I guess it depends on what you like.

    DEFINITELY throw it out.

I drink Almond Breeze almond milk and it says right on the carton to "use within 7 days of opening."
