Can't get up Early... HELP!

Hey all!
Need motivation or advise on how to start getting up early so that I can work out in the morning. I've set my alarms and I hear them go off and basically on auto pilot I turn it off and go back to sleep till my work alarm wakes me up.
I work 0830-17:30 and will work out after work... thinking about doing morning and evening workouts.
- Any suggestions to get me out of bed so that I stay up?

Move your alarm clock so you have to get out of bed to shut it off.0

In my experience becoming a "morning person" is a process for some people, it certainly didn't happen overnight for me. It took about a month of progressively getting up a little earlier each day before I could wake up "early" without feeling like death. Another thing that helps when I want to work out in the morning is taking a pre-workout supplement of some sort. Wakes you right up and you feel ready to take on the world.
Other than that, just make sure you're getting to bed early enough, as obvious as that sounds. I also agree with the moving your alarm clock idea. Good luck!0 -
You don't need to do two workouts per day...if you really want to though, I'd just advise you to actually just get up. There is not secret sorcery to getting up early...you just do it. Personally, I prefer working out in the evenings when I'm 100% and can rock it. I don't need to waste my time trying to squeeze in some lame *kitten* workout in the morning when I'm sluggish.0

I second placing your alarm across the room so you have to get up to turn it off. Works for me every time, and I am NOT a morning person0

My husband is awful for this, he has actually seen doctors because he thinks he has a sleeping disorder. Anyways something he does is he sets several alarms, some two minutes apart,some 5. He also puts his alarm on the other side of the bed room, like other's have said. He has to physically get up, walk across the room to turn it off. It works most mornings!0

#1 most important factor is that you're not trying to get LESS sleep, but just move your schedule. If you're trying to go to bed at the same time and get up earlier- it ain't gonna feel good IF you manage to do it.0

I get up and got to the bathroom and weigh myself... Usually enough motivation to put on my running clothes instead of going back to bed.0

just do it, once you get a coffee into you
you will be a ball of energy.0 -
Do you really need to work out twice a day? You'll probably get burned out pretty quick. Once a day is plenty for most people.0

Go to bed early.
Set out your workout clothes and shoes the night before.
Tell yourself that you're just going to get up and get dressed. Once you've done that, you may as well do your workout.
Make it your routine. I get up for my morning workout every weekday--no ifs, ands or buts about it.0 -

Do you have a smart phone? If so, get the free app, Sleepbot. It has a smart alarm feature that will wake you up when you are naturally in a sleep stage that is closest to wakefulness within half an hour of your alarm. You will feel better and not like a zombie when your alarm goes off. It is much easier to start your day this way.
Also, the Jawbone Up activity tracker offers this feature.
Another sleep trick is to set your alarm for 4 hours after you go to sleep. Wake up and get a glass of water (or drink a protein shake if you are trying to add muscle), stay out of bed for about 5 minutes, then go back to sleep for the rest of the night. This is supposed to have two effects: 1) you will get 20-30% more REM sleep, as it happens shortly after you fall asleep. 2) you will feel more refreshed and alert when you wake up in the morning.

My big secret? Get to bed at a decent time! I know that I need 8 hours sleep in order to wake up naturally refreshed, but everyone is different. Find out what you need and get it! Also...your body likes routine, if you start waking up at a given time every day that will become normal.

I am trying to completely fix this issue myself. I have had success so far just by being outside more in the morning hours when the sun is coming up, though I admit I suck at doing this on the mornings I don't cycle to work. Also being outside some after it gets dark and dimming most lights inside after the sun goes down has helped me get to sleep earlier, and subsequently wake up early without as much hair pulling.

What happens when you can't go back to sleep? I do this alot (not intentionally) then I can't go back to sleep for about an hour or 1/2 then when I do go back to sleep I'm even more tired when my alarm goes off. I'm trying to be an early person too because we stay so busy after work its been really hard to work out.0 -

I put my alarm clock in the bathroom. Once I shut it off, I might as well avail myself to the facilities .. at that point you're kinda more or less up ..0

I use my iPhone to wake me up so when I first started getting up early to workout I would put the phone on the dresser across from my bed so I HAD to get up in order to shut it off.
Now I have the phone on my night stand and get up with it every morning. It does take some time to get used to those nice early mornings.0 -

What happens when you can't go back to sleep? I do this alot (not intentionally) then I can't go back to sleep for about an hour or 1/2 then when I do go back to sleep I'm even more tired when my alarm goes off. I'm trying to be an early person too because we stay so busy after work its been really hard to work out.
It may not work for everyone, but when that happens to me I'll do a couple different things to get myself back to sleep:
1. If I'm stressing out about something, I'll write down everything I need to do the next day. Usually getting it out on paper eases my mind enough to fall back to sleep without worrying that I'm going to forget to do something.
2. If I had to engage in exercise in the middle of the night (if the dog has digestive distress and really couldn't wait until morning for her walk), I will do some relaxing yoga stretches to get my body back into sleep mode. I will usually do this next to the dog, so I can assure myself that she is ok for the rest of the night.
3. If I'm in pain, I will take a pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Then I will gently massage the troublesome body part until the pain relievers kick in.
4. If I don't know what is keeping me awake, I will engage in Breath Awareness Meditation. Combined with a relaxing white noise generator, this works like a charm.0 -
I tell myself if I get up and get that work out done then I'll lose weight. Goal for losing weight? A new outfit, a new purse, new shoes, something to motivate myself to losing weight and making me get out of bed in the morning to work out. That's enough motivation for me because I love new things. Also I get up at 6:30 to start my work out but I set my alarms for 6 that way I can hit the snooze for a bit and still feel like I'm getting more sleep. Don't know why but it works for me!! I am not a morning person or a morning workout person, so I don't try to force myself into that. Also, I get up around 5:30 because I start work at 7, so for me to get up any earlier is really pushing it! On weekends, I will work out in the morning after I wake up naturally and get caffeinated so that I can have the day free.0

don't eat a huge heavy dinner right before bed - this will affect the way you feel in the morning AND go to bed earlier !!0

go to sleep earlier. personally, i also avoid alcohol and tv and other electronics to help me go to sleep faster and sleep better. read a book to help your mind shut down.
prepare everything for the morning the night before. set the coffee pot up, lay out your clothes. make your breakfast and lunch and whatever else you need for the day if you're just going to go from the gym to work.
give yourself plenty of time. i don't like to rush. my gym opens at 6am and is a few blocks away. i'll leave my house at 6am, but i'll have my alarm set for 5am. i hit snooze once. my ringtone is "eye of the tiger," which is much more motivating to wake up than some obnoxious beeping. it also used to be on my dresser so i had to get up to shut it off. then i have about 45 minutes to take my time and sip some coffee while getting dressed and watching the news.
the rest of the day i'm running around on someone elses schedule. but not the mornings. the mornings are mine.0 -
I feel your pain!
Due to sporadic work hours, I kind of have a nocturnal sleep cycle, I usually end up getting up at 6pm, then go to bed around 9am!
On times when I do need to sort my sleep cycle out, I usually take a sleeping pill early on to knock me out, so I awake the next day at a normal hour!
Seriously though, unless you have appointments, kids or other places you HAVE to be during the day, being nocturnal has it's advantages!0 -

OP- Just do it. Don't think about what your about to do, just get up and start moving.
You'll get used to it, and you might even grow to love it. It's my favorite time of the day now, and I was never a morning person.0 -
I'm not a morning person so I can relate to the sentiment...I force myself to get up at 3:30 a.m. and start my workout. Two things I have incorporated, an alarm clock and discipline.
