Oralistat... Does it really work?

Has anyone had any success stories with the help of Orlistat? I'd love to hear them as I have just been prescribed them today!

Orlistat does and doesn't work. I believe they block about 30% of the fat you eat. The recommended amount of fat is supposed to be around 15g per meal, three meals a day. So out of 45g of fat you can eat each day.... it will block around 13.5g of fat.
Now think about it.... there is 9 calories in one gram of fat, so each day by taking the tablet you are saving around 121 calories. And if it takes 3,500 calories to lose one pound, it is going to take almost a whole month to lose one pound (which is directly associated with taking the pill).
Orlistat works on ALL fats, so you would have to eat very low fat products. If you have something like an egg, it can be too much. And as a lot of vitamins are fat soluble you would have to take a multivitamin at night a couple of hours after your last tablet.
There is little "side effect" from the tablet.... but there are certainly "consequences" lol. If you eat too much fat over what is recommended.... you will crap yourself. Sorry to put it bluntly but you will. I took the pill for a couple of months and was terrified of the "treatment effects" as they like to call them. I did lose weight.... and I never had a single accident. But I was miserable. I was terrified of eating in a restaurant in case they cooked the vegetables in butter. I wouldn't eat at a party or friends house because I was so nervous of fats being in foods.
Apparently the treatment effects are terrible. It isn't like having an upset tummy and running to the loo. It's literally oil that comes out and oozes out, apparently you won't even feel it until you notice the smell and you'll have to bin the underwear (and probably trousers) that you were wearing.
So, I would say that Orlistat does work, but it's more of a deterrant, to make sure you don't eat the wrong kinds of things. The weight loss that is a direct result of taking the pill would be around 1lb a month, assuming you were eating the full 15g of fat per meal. I usually aimed for under 10g as the one time I ate 15g at dinner my belly was all rumbly and I couldn't even sleep at night for worry that I would crap on my husband in my sleep!!!0 -
Oh and apparently the oil is bright orange (think the kind that forms on top of a curry when sat for a while) and smells terrible.
So if you are going to take them, definitely log all your food before you eat them to check fat contents, do not eat more than 15g of fat per meal (and apparently it's best to stick to foods that are less than 5% fat per 100g) and carry a spare change of pants around with you.0 -
I took Alli which is about half the potency of orlistat. I did lose with it (gained most of it back) but I also have had a problem with constipation since that time. I has been about 5 years since I took it and I still have problems. I really would not advise taking it because of that.
