Ladies: satisfy my curiousity

I wear compression shorts everyday when I work out. I know what benefit it gives me. It helps to keep everything pinned down and in place while I run, glide, lift, whatever.
Lately, I have been seeing the ladies in the gym are wearing compresssion shorts more frequently. I was just wondering what benefit it offers to the ladies? I realize it makes them look nice, and if they are benching or laying down, keeps things from acccidentally being revealed. However, the ladies I am seeing wear them are not laying down in their routines. They are on a treadmill, or elliptical.

Well I'm going to share this even though it is something I am completely embarrassed about. My thighs rub together like crazy when running and my shorts tend to ride up and it looks awful. Compression shorts help with the rubbing and when my shorts ride it's not as noticeable if they are the same color. You can imagine what I look like while running and trying to pull shorts down or getting a wider stance trying to let them "fall" back into place. Probably part of the reason I hate cardio and don't do it very often.0

yup, what "inforbacon" said. I am the one you see running and pulling down my shorts or getting a wide step for a sec to let them fall For those interested, what can help w/ the chafing if you don't want to do compression shorts or wear leggins is "Body Glide"! Love that stuff. Can also be used if your arms rub your chest, etc. I'm sure other things like petroleum jelly may work, but body glide is what I have and a lot of runners use0

this exactly. screw chub rub!
edit to add: plus I like having a camle toe when I squat.0 -

This exactly. If it's too hot to wear capris, compression shorts are the way to go for me. I am not messing with them or trying to pull them down constantly. And like the OP said, I am not worried about showing anything when I am squatting or on the bench. Plus some people just look awesome in them and want to rock them out for no reason at all.0 -
Clearly, I need to invest in some compression shorts...0

They probably like the way they look? I don't know.
I wear yoga shorts running.0 -

This is why I wear them too. I have no thigh gap. :blushing:0 -
Nope. NO compression shorts.
EVER.
EVER.
I never wear shorts.
EVA.
I ONLY wear fitted carpis that fall below the knee. (no floppy pants either- that ****s annoying)
Although working out in fitted shorts are great (so I hear)- I won't do it LOL. I think the biggest difference- is they are designed to take a beating- and they tend to be a little longer- so you don't get the booty falling out the bottom and keep in mind not all spandex shorts- are compression shorts. Even though they all look pretty much the same... they might not be actual "compression" shorts- just spandex shorts.0 -
I like to wear the shorts, but honestly I feel self conscience about it. After wearing to they gym once, I decided they weren't for me. Though like many ladies have said it is nice to not.... take the wide step in hopes things will fall down or just get off the trail and give 'em a yank. Maybe in twenty pounds I will be more comfy.0
-
They are really comfy, don't move around and they wick sweat away well.0
-
I wear compression shorts, capris and tights when I run because it helps with soreness, especially from my long runs. I notice a big difference when I wear them compared to my other running gear.0
-
I wear them when I am running outside. They are comfortable and keep things from jiggling too much.0
-
Hmm, now I feel like I should buy some.0

Comfier than shorts because I have fat thighs and get chub rub too. I did run in shorts once - big mistake. Now, I don't particularly care what my *kitten* looks like to others, I'd rather be comfortable and have a decent workout as a result. I could wear loose shorts over the top, but that just seems pointless.0

While not a lady, I have an answer.
There are many reasons for compression. It helps get blood out of worked areas and back towards the heart. Many athletes wear compression and swear that this increases performance.
As a lifter and a runner I find that it does two things for me. When I run I wear compression sleeves on my calves and the results are noticeable. My calves and shins get less tired and I'm able to run for longer periods at higher speeds with better form.
I don't regularly wear compression when I lift but I have worn compression shirts for that same purpose. It provides stability as well which helps enable form for better and longer workouts.
I researched this well before I tried it and while studies vary, my experience was positive and it's not really about looks when athletes use them... although the above mentioned points about comfort are very valid.0 -

This, and they keep my butt and thighs from jiggling excessively.0 -
A friend if mine insists wearing compression shorts is helping her lose weight. She wears them every workout and thinks she sweats more so she is burning more cals... I personally do not agree, but it is motivating her to workout so I support her efforts.0

I don't do cardio or run so the other comments aren't relevant to me. I will say that I wear compression shorts while lifting.
1.) why shorts instead of capris or yoga pants? I hate when you're lifting and bending down and fabric is restricting/covering your knees. Dead lifts/squats with constricted knees? No thanks!
2.) when deadlifting, squatting, benching, planking, etc. I want to make absolutely certain that my *kitten* is covered. I think the women who wear those wind-breaker looking running shorts to lift and constantly flash an *kitten* cheek are gross. No one wants to see that!
3.) they keep my waist area feeling tight and don't ride up/give camel toe.
In all honesty if I could workout in the gym with a leotard without being judged I would. Love clothing that makes me feel free!0 -
Thigh rubbing, and it holds our wiggle in a bit better. When we jog we are jogging in place, not all over the room.0

I only wear them when running/cardio to help with the thigh rubbing. I don't wear them for weight days because all my athletic shorts have those built in "underwear" to prevent anything from being seen.0

Keeps everything still!0

^^^This. for running, I perfer a running skirt with compression shorts. It's super comfy, no rubbing or creeping, and everything is covered. For the gym, I wear shorts with a compression liner. I like to know that everything is covered, from every angle.0 -
for me compression shorts wouldnt have any benefits at all. i mainly wear compression because i find it helps with recovery when my muscles and joints are kept snug. shorts cant compress, quads, hamstrings and calves.0
-
Compression clothes are not for keeping your jiggly bits in place, although they do do that, they're actually designed to aid recovery.0
-
Simple answer: Thigh Rub.0
-
Different answer here: Air flow. Mine wick so they're cooler than looser clothing that builds up a pocket of steam around me. But thigh rub is valid too.0
-
I just feel more aerodynamic in them. *shrug*0
