Only lost about 10 lbs but already plateauing?

i've probably been trying to lose weight for 1 month and 1 week but I'm already plateauing? I just started 30DS a week ago but it hasn't helped me lose anything, I've been plateauing for a week now ): I dont expect to lose a ton but even .2 in a week would be okay. Do I need to up my calories or maybe less calories? Please help before I start to get discouraged ):

Ten pounds, 5 weeks - and you'd be happy with 2 pounds per week loss, right. Ok then.

Weight loss is not (always) linear and a week or two of staying the same is not a plateau.

1 week does not make a plateau.. come on back in 3 months at the same weight.

I just started my weight loss, cut out probably almost a liter of soda a day and just started exercising. I am new so I was just wondering if the calories and everything I was eating was okay. Since I started working out, but if this is just going to make ppl chew me out I will delete it. Thanks. I mostly wanted to know if it's something I am or am not doing or if I need to adjust on MFP. If someone could just give me some input.

    This!

ETA: Still, though, you are defiantly not in plateau territory

Without seeing your diary it's hard to say but if you eat the recommended number of calories, you will lose weight, with or without exercise. Are you eating back most of your exercise calories?

I've done 24 days of 30DS and I think it's helped me tone up more than anything. The weight loss is more from calorie control and the workout is more for fitness for me.

I used to think a week was a plateau too, but no, it's not. I've been at this for well over a year now and while I don't always stick to my 1200 a day, as long as I remain below my maintenance number, I still slowly lose. Keep at it, you may be surprised and suddenly the scale may show a 2 or 3 lb loss one day. Your scale may also increase the next day! But over time if you eat within your calories, your clothes should get smaller so just stick with it; it's a process and slower is better than rushing it because you're more apt to keep the weight off.

I work with a guy who lost 40 lbs in 2 months and promptly gained it right back. I've lost more than 30 lbs over a couple years and still going, slow and steady. Remember, you didn't gain that weight overnight and it will take longer to get the weight off than it did to put it on. (Watch the documentary Super Size Me; Morgan Spurlock intentionally eats McDonald's food for 30 days to gain weight and it takes him months to get the weight off.)

    And good luck!

Are your muscles sore? They may be retaining fluid.

Exercise doesn't help with scale loss. It helps with fitness and inch loss. What you eat helps with scale loss.

However I agree with everyone else, one or two weeks isn't a plateau. I've been doing this a few mths now & so far have had 2 weigh ins in a row where my #s were very low, literally .4 both weeks in the most recent. I suspected maybe a plateau was around the corner but then the following week I lost 3.6lbs. Our bodies are constantly adjusting to the new changes so you have to give it time. You also just started 30DS, if you finish it & then are at the same weight then I would say yes, you've hit a plateau. I've managed to avoid it so far but I think its because I keep changing things up every few mths. When I first started I did elliptical few times a week for 20-30mins. I also did a little Wii Fit until I got bored with it & felt like it wasn't enough of a work out. So I dropped the Wii Fit & added in Just Dance 4 workouts. Those were alot more fun. I don't exercise every day, I aim for 4-5 days a week but sometimes I get in more, others none at all, just depends on the week. Once the weather got nice, around May, I started walking. First I did 30mins, then eventually built up to an hour. I had a few routes I use depending on how much time I have. The routes also are different intensities. This got me through the summer just nice, along with the occasional swim if we hit the beach on the weekends. Now that fall is around the corner, I am still going to walk but going to start adding in the elliptical again & will use it throughout the winter.

Give yourself time, you will get there!

Unless you are very obese, look for an average of 1 to 2 pounds per week maximum over the long haul. Dropping 10 pounds in a short period of time means much of it was probably water. Our weight loss is not linear. It bounces up and down during the day and day-by-day. You are looking for a long downward slide with lots of ups and downs. So, you haven't really plateaued yet. And when you do find you have, after a few weeks, hit a steady weight, then it's time to reanalyze what you are doing.

As we weigh less, our TDEE goes down and so does our calorie target. So, for example, right now my target is 1700 calories a day. When I started, it was 1850 a day. I recalculate every ten pounds and adjust accordingly.

So, the question is, what is your present TDEE and how many calories do you need to eat each day to keep losing at the rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week. The recent 10 pound loss in a very short time is unlikely to repeat itself.

    Hi,
I've been feeling kind of the same way lately. I was doing well for a while (maybe 5 weeks) but then stopped, and haven't lost for about 3 weeks. I think your body gets used to your new diet and exercise plan.
I was also confused about whether to lower or raise my calories. Some people swear by eating more to loose more, but I think that depends on what you are already eating now. Anyway, that didn't seem logical to me, and I was usually overindulging one weekend day a week, so I am trying to be even more careful with my eating. I got more healthy foods, not just focused on calories. I also upped my workouts. I actually just added 30DS along with Jillian's Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism (aerobic) & No More Trouble Zones (strength), which are 50 min. long.

I think it is pretty natural to loose more at the beginning and then stall as your body adapts. I would say try different things and see what works for you! My scale finally went down a bit this morning. :)

Good luck, and don't listen to the haters.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that, good point! :drinker:

When I first started exercising and had sore muscles, the scale showed an increase. When your muscles are sore, your body will retain water to repair your muscles. I don't know if this happens with everyone, but with me, as the soreness began to go away, I noticed I was urinating a lot and when I weighed myself the next day, bam!, the scale number decreased because my muscles healed and I got rid of that extra water/fluid.

I do understand what you mean. After I lost my first 10 or so pounds, I didn't lose anything for a bit. I was worried I was doing something wrong, but everyone told me just to hold on. After a little over a week, the weight starting coming off again. Then, it slowed again. I haven't lost anything (according to the scale) for the last week. However, I looked at myself in the mirror and I could see that my body is noticeably slimmer. Remember to just hang in there. Weight loss isn't linear and the scale isn't always the best way to measure results.

Okay sorry if I didn't give enough info I'm 19 5'4' starting weight 207.8 and current weight is 199. I do eat back my exercise calories most days because I'm still nursing my daughter and I get hungry and I'm dealing with extremely bad anxiety. I am really sore since I've never really had to work out before. I will just keep trying to keep going and once I finish 30DS I'm still at 199 I'll come back. Thank you guys, I don't know much about fitness stuff so I was just getting worried I was doing something wrong. Like I said I have anxiety about everything. Even weight loss ):

I put the thingy to lose 1lb a week and at first it was 1,720 calories plus 400 calories for breastfeeding. But now it gives me 1,570 calories and my daughter is nursing less so 275 for breastfeeding. Plus the 150 30DS gives me. Is that too much?

    1) Weight loss is not linear.
    2) Don't be in a hurry, the slower you take it off the easier it is to keep it off. Don't start the yo-yo cycle... that just leads to anxiety.

What's your height, Start weight and goal weight?

I noticed your very young and sorry if I generalize a bit here, but often the youngsters tend to shoot for over ambitious or unrealistic goals.

You're nursing? It'll drop off as long as you eat sensibly. Natural liposuction.

If you've noticed a loss, at all, while breastfeeding.. I say stick with it. The goal that you're looking at is realistic, and this isn't a plateau. You're dealing with a lot more in the way of everyday fluctuation because you're breastfeeding..

I shift as much as 8-10 lbs from day to day, and I'm only worrying about poop. I can't imagine what it's like having to go "well, I'm full..." on more than one front.

Stick to the goal that you were given, keep the extra for breastfeeding, and just be patient.

You seem to be on track, especially since you are seeing the weight go down. Keep at it.

Stick with it. Your body is going to change a lot while breastfeeding. I would figure out your BMR and make sure you eat at least that plus whatever MFP tells you for breastfeeding for now. Give 30DS a chance to work and make sure you drink enough water. Drink more than you think you need, it will help your sore muscles recover.

And we can help a lot more if you open your diary. In addition, more protein will help your muscles recover.

    Good luck!

You're making my point (I forgot the decimal) -- if she would have been happy with .2 over 5 weeks, that is one singular pound, she's lost 10x that amount. That's also why I said weight loss isn't linear. If you lose a bigger number in a shorter period of time, you should expect a week or two or three or four of either no loss of slower loss.

Her situation details aside, for the long term, you have to be VERY realistic about what success looks like and have a healthy perspective on losing. Which is to say, you should expect a week (even several) where the is no loss after a substantial loss without worrying that you've stalled out.
