When they said "do you want salt and pepper on that" what did you say? And did you choose low sodium dressing? Otherwise wheres the sodium? In the bread?

Lunch meat notoriously has high sodium.

The sodium is in the bread and the meat. Processed and preserved meat has a lot of sodium.

Meh. It is high, but so is pretty much all restaurant food. Salt and/or salted butter makes food taste freaking good.

Lunch meat is very high in sodium, as it is usually brined as part of the processing.

Lunch meat and bread both have a lot of sodium. So do pickles, banana peppers, black olives, and several of their dressings.

Well, I'm not proud of it, but the only "extra" i had was black olives. I never get salt on anything. I don't cook with salt either, I figure it's easier to add a little when food is on the plate.

Fair amount in the cheese, too. I ate four pickles the other day (and five green olives lol)....plus I had something like canned chili, I don't really remember. But my sodium that day was like 5000 mg. Insane.

Yes, I agree. Even deli/cold cuts that tend to be low in calories, seem to still be high in sodium. It adds up quick!

I love subway and my husband actually works there part time, it's all in the sauce, cheese, meats, and breads!!! My husband even told me did you know the flat bread has the most calories out of all the breads? I was kind of shocked but I still like it

Sodium is okay in moderation but, can cause water retention in excess. Too much sodium is just not good for your health.

I'm glad I wasn't the only shocked by the sodium content in Subway sandwiches! I don't eat them as often anymore because of the sodium. I definitely feel better now that I've cut back on the salt.

So can water, creatine, having your period and a hundred other things. What's wrong with water retention?
Too much sodium is just not good for your health.

    Why? What's wrong with sodium?

er.. water retention makes you feel bloated and awful. its just one of many delightful aspects of getting ones period. Nice to see you don't think theres anything wrong with it, but I think a lot of ladies would disagree.

It can cause problems for people with hypertension if they don't realize how high the sodium content is in a Subway sub?

Some people's bodies are more sensitive to the effects of sodium than are others. If you're sodium sensitive, you retain sodium more easily, leading to fluid retention and increased blood pressure. If this becomes chronic, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and congestive heart failure.

People with hypertension should have a higher awareness than the average person regarding sodium content of the food they eat.

I agree, but what people should do and what they do aren't always the same. *shrugs* Besides, the question was asked at least twice so I was just providing a possible answer.

sodium seems like one of the trickier things to track and for some so important. i think if my life depended on it due to some condition or disease i might consider prelogging whenever faced with eating a meal out at anywhere since it can be high at both fast food and restaurants.

Too little sodium is just horrible for my health. I am hypotensive though.

ETA: I never got the attraction to subway... Overpriced and cheap quality. Although I might be spoiled when it comes to subs. there is a little mom and pop sandwich shop/deli downtown and their food is heaven! Plus they use all fresh produce from local farmers.

A few people have mentioned hypertension. Well...

    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=its-time-to-end-the-war-on-salt

Dietary sodium has a very limited effect on blood pressure for most people (a 1mmHg average drop in both systolic and diastolic pressure after following a low Na diet for months in one of the studies mentioned? Come on...) I stopped caring about my sodium intake after my doctor told me he's never had a hypertensive patient who's lowered his or her BP by eating less salt. Sure enough, I was hypertensive while on a very low sodium diet and eating salt again didn't have any measurable effect in raising my BP. Now that I've lost weight, I still don't care about my sodium intake at all and I'm off my BP meds. Go figure!

As for water retention and feeling bloated, that's just not a problem I experience personally, but I can see how it might affect someone more sensitive. Still, there's a big leap between "sodium makes me feel bloated" and "sodium is bad for your health."

I went WAY over my sodium limit...my sub alone was above my sodium limit

Well, your doctor hasn't treated many heart patients then. :) True, losing weight will affect high blood pressure way more than just eating less sodium will, as you discovered, but if you're in the "dangerously high blood pressure" category, every little bit helps. Also, high blood pressure isn't the only issue associated with sodium. Me, I've got life-threatening arrhythmia and am at high risk of sudden death, enough that they stuck an internal defibrillator in my chest, and it gives me a zap that feels like being kicked hard in the chest when the ticker gets out of line. For me, eating enough sodium is essential to help maintain a proper heart rhythm. If I go below 500mg, things can get hairy. But on the flip side, if I go over about 1200mg consistently, I will retain water like crazy because both sides of my heart are failing, and when such retention happens, the issue isn't just "feeling bloated." I'm a woman, and the monthly bloat is NOTHING compared to what my body will do if I eat too much sodium. The issue with fluid retention, for me, is that it makes my heart work harder to overcome the systemic congestion that the water retention creates, and I have to avoid that at all costs. So for me, sodium is a constant balancing act, and I always have to watch how much or how little I take in. For me, too little is actually worse than too much, but it's far, FAR easier to take in too much than it is to take in too little.

But then, I realize that I'm in a huge minority here. :) For most people, sodium really isn't much of an issue. Yeah, if you overindulge regularly, it'll cause you to retain water, which makes your heart and your kidneys work harder to get rid of the excess fluid, and it might raise your blood pressure a bit. Those things won't kill you unless you make overindulgence a chronic thing. But for those of us for whom sodium IS an issue? Well, for us it's a very big deal, indeed. But like someone else said, those of us who fall into that "very big deal" category pretty much know that lunch meat, cheese, and pretty much everything packaged and highly processed is simply off the menu. And eating at a restaurant? HAHAHAHAHAH!
