My first 5K...a load of awesome sauce!!!!

Rolled out of bed at 6 am and headed to the park it was being held at. It was flipping cold this morning...45* F. The race started at 7:30 am. My brother (who is a Marine and home on leave) was running it with me, and since I know he can run MUCH faster than I can, I told him I just needed him to start with me and then he could go do his own thing and I'd finish at my pace. Well, they split the guys and girls and started the men 3 mins later. So there went that plan. I wound up in the middle of a pack at the start and was going WAY too fast for the first half mile. Then my brother caught up to me, and I managed to find my pace. He ended up running the entire thing with me, and was pushing me pretty hard. I ran a faster pace than I have ever been able to sustain, and shaved four minutes off my best 5k time. Super excited! I finished in 36 mins, which I feel was pretty respectable for my first 5k and being a newbie runner still.

So if I can do it, you can too! When I first started running I couldn't even make it to our mailbox. Today I only had to walk twice very briefly. And, I felt like a runner today too! Not just someone who was struggling around the block.

I love threads like this one! It is a load of awesome sauce!:)
  • Good for you!!!

I haven't done a 5K yet, I'm still working on the couch to 5 k plan (Zombies, run!) and the most I've done in one session is 4.2 km in 36 minutes.

I hope you are very proud of yourself! I hope to be posting a similar thread when I do the Santa Shuffle in December.
  • YAY!

Also, your brother is a doll.

Mega gratz! I did my first 5k yesterday, you beat my time though (by 1 minute). Like you, I started in a very very bad place, I couldn't even walk 1/2 mile without needing to take a break. So I share your sense of satisfaction!

Congrats! My family (myself, my fiance, my son, his son and daughter) all started the Couch to 5K program last week. Today we completed week 2, day 1. I am always out of breath and wonder if I can even get to a 5K, this gives me hope that I can and will if I just keep up with it!

Congrats, and what a great brother you have to keep with you! I hope someday I can feel like a runner, too!

Thank you everyone! I'm looking forward to my next 5k, although I'm not sure I'll be able to get another one in this year with my schedule. My parents asked me if this was going to start being a regular thing, and I said absolutely!

I've been running for nine months now, and I'm just now at the point that I can do 2 miles regularly without feeling like I want to die. The 3 miles was pushing it a bit, but it was a good push and not to the point of injury (although I am sore today!). Don't get discouraged if at the end of the program you still don't feel like you can handle the 5k...it took me much longer to reach that point than that program would have allowed, but I have the rest of my life to improve!

Congrats! I'm so glad your brother was able to support you. I think 36 mins is an amazing time and as a fellow new runner, I would be more than delighted to make such a time myself. :)

Awesome inspiration. I was touched by your brother's willingness to put your welfare above his own (such a Marine!). So happy that you completed the 5K. Also, please thank your brother for his service to our country. We are forever thankful!!
