Bad knees

I recently ended up with runner's knees after over-exercising for a month. Now, going down stairs hurts (much less running, or weight-lifting).
Does anyone have tips on how to stay fit and continue to exercise with bad knees? I've been resting them for a couple of months, but they don't seem to be getting better (though my waistline is certainly getting larger).

Hi! I had very sores knees when I first started running that just turned out to be a very tight ITB. A visit to the physio and using a foam roller when I exercise fixed me right up! Have you been to a physio yet? )

Firstly, visit someone (doctor/physio) to find out what's going on. I had patella tendonitis in both my knees caused by trying to run too much too soon. My exercises for rehab consisted of incline/fitball squats.
To stay fit I lifted weights (avoiding soreness), did boxing and cycled. Swimming is a great low-impact option also0 -
Seek medical attention and follow your doctor's advice as best you can. Work to strengthen your knees. Then choose exercises that are knee friendly, such as walking, riding a bike, yoga, & swimming if your doctor thinks it is okay. Avoid exercises that pound your knees. If you work out at a gym use the elliptical trainer instead of the treadmill. It is a matter of rest and sensible exercise. Good luck.0
