Is my diet affecting my acne?

I'm almost 24 so I would consider this adult acne. The rest of my face is clear and bright but along my jawline and chin I've been getting some painful zits. I looked at a 'chart' on what issues could be happening depending on where your acne is located and It's right where colon and digestive issues are...Likewise I was researching and found that dairy could be a huge cause for adult/adolescent acne.

It just so happens that I've been eating ALOT of plain greek yogurt every day... breakfast and snacks. I just love it! High in protein low in carbs and fat. That's really the only dairy I eat besides a cheese stick or something. I also eat oats frequently for breakfast too, so maybe its the gluten? Anyway, has anyone else had these problems? I love greek yogurt for the digestive enzymes, but should I maybe do a colon cleanse or enema or something to clear up my skin? I rarely eat processed foods, so if diet is playing a part, than it would be from the dairy or gluten (my diary is open if that helps).

I am 32 and suffered from the same thing about a year ago. My dermatologist said that the acne (it was cystic) was mostly caused from hormones and not my diet. I had recently changed BC and once my body got used to the new hormones the acne cleared up. Not sure if that helps but that is my experience.

I am 40 and my breakouts are directly related to my cycle and therefore hormonal.

I do know that in the summer if I am eating a lot of fruit that will cause me to break out, or if I eat a lot of soy I will get skin irritations although that is usually my eye lids. But I read once that soy kind of builds up in your system and can cause a reaction in some people.

Maybe from sweating during workouts. The sweat could be clogging your pores? Do you wear make up? Maybe try removing it before exercising. I would guess though it is hormonal. Those hormones do weird things.

I'm 36 and when I have skin issues it's usually jaw/chin like you mentioned. I've been told it's hormonal.

Instead of considering a colon cleanse or enema, try cutting dairy and gluten out of your diet for a month and see what happens. Then reintroduce one serving of dairy to see how your body responds. Go back to eating neither for a couple of days then reintroduce one serving of a food containing gluten to see how your body response. A friend of mine did this and confirmed that she's lactose intolerant (previously suspected but symptoms mostly ignored as she loves cheese) and has a slight intolerance to gluten.

There are oats on the market that are gluten free. Dairy is a little harder to remove from your diet but there are alternatives for these as well.

ETA: I'm 39 and my acne is also mostly located on my chin/jaw area but mostly only comes in around TOM so it's definitely hormone related.
  • Thanks ladies! Hormones could definitely be the culprit.... so annoying though!

I am 39, and have noticed not only have I broken out aroung my chin and lower face, but they are deep and sore. They also are taking longer to clear up. I attributed it to my body adjusting to the healthier diet, and that might be bogus. I like to think my body is flushing toxins at a greater rate and therefore blocked pores are freaking out on me. I don't know really.I am hoping it clears up. I have been doing this MFP for about 2-3 weeks now. I have been sweating more from exercise so that might be it too. I will check back to see if anyone has a fix.

Chin/jawline acne is usually hormonal. Forehead acne is more diet related iirc. If someone has diet related acne its usually because of soy. It messes with your hormones. Green tea and flax are the other ones you might want to look into. GL!
