Size 6 and 170lbs

I can't tell if I should be losing weight or not... I'm always very upset about my weight, and have had eating disorder issues in the past. I just have a little extra fat, being a size six, but feel down about it... it's confusing to be so heavy, yet small. I don't understand how I CAN lose weight - anything I try doesn't work. I'm also super strong, but don't have an incredibly muscular physique. I have a little bit of belly fat that I would like to lose... I'm just stuck here. I've been here for years.

Because of my past struggle with eating disorders, no one will be honest with me. They tell me I should be happy that I'm healthy. But I want to tone up and look AWESOME ... like fitness model awesome. Not just average or having "enough fat to be healthy." I'd like to be a size four.

It's also hard because my chest is small... so having a little extra fat, and no chest... it's hard.

I think if I tone up and lose a little, I'll be happy with the way my body looks, and can get my confidence where it should be. I'm an avid exerciser (intense and frequent), and eat very healthy. I do partake in drinking alcohol, and should probably cut most of that, but other than that, I don't really have other bad eating habits.

I'm just lost as to if this is normal, if anyone else is going through something similar, and if anyone has REAL advice they can share about how to lose a small amount of body fat (finally! lol). Going out on a limb by posting this, but I'd like the support. I've been self-conscious for years, and I really want to put it behind me. Any kind or helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know what your body fat % is? How tall are you? You seem like you're really muscular! If I were you I would set my goal at a small deficit (.5 or 1lb/week), make sure to get in enough protein to maintain all of that lmm and lift some weights.

Well, first of all.....you will need to calm down and not obsess.

If you want to get some muscle tone, the only way that is gonna happen is if you get in the gym and start throwing around some iron.

    Try going to here: http://iifym.com/iifym-calculator/
(or any other calculator your prefer).

Fill out the info and find out what you need to be hitting daily for calories and macros.
When I look at these calculators, I keep in my mind that they are ball park figures, so they are around where you should be, but will require you to monitor food intake, activity level, and reaching goals.

Woah. You're a size 6 at 170 lbs... that's awesome. You have good muscles on you. I'm sure there's not much fat left on you. I'm 5'7" and 160 lbs and size 8. There's some fat left, but not a lot.

    I'm a wee puny 135# and a size 8, only 5' tall, my bf% is somewhere about 28% and I'm aiming for ~ 25% :ohwell:
I gotta say....yes, that's a lotta muscle :drinker: and that's cool as hell
  • Thank you all.. I meant to repost... I'm 5'6. I do have good muscle tone. I'm just incredibly frustrated with my inability to lose the last bit of fat I'm hanging on to... It's been detrimental to my self-esteem. I am happy to put in the work too! I run just about everyday, I do cross-fit, hiking, turbo fire, you name it. So, MityMax96, you say weight lifting might do that?

I think doing weights will not hurt...especially if you can develop muscle easy.

Sounds like you are pretty active, so add in some weight lifting.
You will get a nice toned look.
The muscle you put on will help burn calories at rest.....

But also, make sure you are where you need to be calorie wise......you may need to drop a few calories a day to lose some of the fat.
Keeping a diary filled and accurate will help with this.

  • Thank you - I'm 5'6 and don't know how much body fat I have. I would love to lose .5 lbs/week, but can't seem to! lol I just am lost as to how to actually make it work.

It's natural and healthy for women to have a little bit of fat. If you'd like to try to lose a little bit of body fat do so in a healthy manner. A small calorie deficit, moderate cardio, and weight lifting. Concentrate on body fat percentage not actual scale weight. Scale weight doesn't matter.

    I'm 5'9" and 163lbs, and a size 8.

I am super active and weights do sound like a good idea! I'll give that a go. My calorie count is set to 1470/day, and I just started it back up. I was hesitant to calorie count because of my past, but being that I want to put it behind me... I think as long as I don't obsess, it would be good to do. A healthy assurance that I'm doing what I'm trying to do correctly.

    1470 cal/day...hmmm.....
What do macros look like for that?

Yes, don't obsess, you will mess yourself up even worse.

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. I was (gained a little back) 163lbs and an 8/10 and SO CHUBBY (though that was the smallest size I'd worn that I could remember).

I started strength training and have put on weight (not only muscle, some fat too because I increased my caloric intake), but am hoping that with the additional metabolic boost, I can get back down to a 6/8, but be less squishy. If you're doing lots of cardio, add in strength training and that will help you slim down :)

hmmm indeed... I eat 2300/day for recomp or about 2600/day for maintenance. 1470 sounds like starvation to me. Where did that goal come from?

I'm 5'8" and 158 159ish. I feel bigger all the time and obsess about it too! So I can totally relate with you OP. I actually looked it up and i'm borderline bulemic. I have worked hard to lose the weight i have and some days feel like i'm going to eat my way back to 220. I just try to make sure i'm working out daily 4-6 days a week!
On that note, the last 5-10lbs is always the slowest to go. I would say this is the time to establish your new life style. I"m trying to learn that eating a candy bar every now and then isnt going to make me fat. Even though I just ate one and kind of want to cry. Lol so yeah, i just feel like i can totally relate to this post!

    That is my thought.....

On IIFYM calc, they show TDEE for you being around 2300

Can't imagine what it'slike to be in such good shape, lol - congratulations! Just looked at your diary, and think lookiing at your macros would help - less sodium, and more protein v. carbs...
  • Yeah I came up with tdee at 2300, but I don't know how to decipher. What to do with that lol

Yup, 1470 is probably too low. I eat 2000 net to lose, TDEE is 2300-2600 for me.

So like no less than 2000... between 2000 and 2100 is probably good to start.

Go to step 2 of the calc.
    Select suggested 15%

Step 3, leave at defaults, unless you want to change your fat or protein intake.
If you do start lifting weights, I would leave protein at 1.00 gr / lb of body weight...

Step 4 gives your macro break down

Do you think maybe I'm just not eating enough, and that's why I can't seem to lose weight? That could be a contributing factor. That's what was recommended by My Fitness Pal.. I've also had a nutritionist in the past recommend it.

5'6" , 170 and a size 6? that is awesome. im 5'6" as well and at 170 I am a solid size 12 (not too big not too small). So I think you are definitely good on the muscle, and probably more strength training will get you the fat loss you are looking for so that you can see your muscle definition.
