Not counting calories?

I know this may an unusual post on a calorie counting site, but I am wondering if there any people out there who no longer count calories and who have still lost/maintained their weight?
I have been counting calories for a year but have lost and gained the same 8kgs over the past 12 months. When logging, I would religiously count every calorie but become so obsessed I was anxious all the time and freaked out when I was eating out - then I would binge for days or even weeks...
I'm taking a new approach - weighing my food to ensure my portion sizes remain the same but won't be counting my calories and exercising 4-5 times per week (cardio/weights). I have been writing down my food intake for the past few days in a notebook but not tracking the calories.
Any similar stories/suggestions?
Thanks

I'm trying to increase my calories by 100 a week as I near my goal and I do find it scary. But I think you just have to keep telling yourself that its a trial and if it doesn't work then no harm done and try something different. We know how to lose weight now so at the end of the day it sounds like you're doing a healthy thing for you, but it's not a life sentence if it doesn't work out. It's funny how we get emotional about it when it's just logic and common sense at the end of the day.0

I don't count calories as much, but rather my portion sizes when cooking at home. However, when it comes to going out to eat or buying snacks, I still count calories.0

Not an unusual question at all.
In fact, there's a large group of folks who either don't count, or count rarely..
