Fainted at the gym =\

Today I had my first personal training session. I did okay with the weight training but when we started cardio I began to feel a little light headed. Durning high knees I started to see black dots and my hearing got muffeled. Then, I collapsed. It took me about 30 minutes to recouperate and my trainer said my heart rate went from 182 to 45 in a matter of seconds. He gave me some powerade and it helped a bit. I went to the doctor right after and everything came back fine except my blood count which showed I have a UTI. Doctor swears the UTI could have caused it, but my trainer said that I started yawning, a sign of decreasing blood sugar.
has this happened to anyone before? I am a little worried about this!

So your trainer figured your sugars were low...but did not bother to intervene?

yea he just sat there and watched me really. I was down for 30mins before the manager came out with some powerade and that seemed to help a bit.

Happens to me all the time. Through high school and right after pregnancy. Would happen now too but I stop myself once I feel the symptoms. I'll wait 15 min if I have to before trying to exercise again. I don't know what it is but realize I can't go as intense as everyone else. Sucks for cardio but I do okay with weights and resistance. and Ironically when I was killing myself with cardio the weight would come back on. Now with a mix and very little cardio the weights flying off.

Bottom line.... I learned my lesson.

Be careful and listen to your body. Not everyone can go from 0 to 90. And it is indeed okay.

Don't give up like I did. Adjust....Let your trainer know that you need to lower the intensity. I mean if you still lose at a lower intensity is it really a problem. Take your time and be patient.

    GOOD LUCK!:drinker:

good to hear im not the only one. I have another training session Monday and if it happens again the doctor said to go to the hospital. I do fine with Zumba or working out along but he really kicked my butt today. I think maybe he just started me off too hard.

low blood sugar would not cause your heart rate to drop that suddenly. However, if you vaso vageled that would cause your heart rate to drop and cause you to faint. A UTI can make you more prone to vaso vageling since it is extra stress on your body.

few years ago i fainted, thankfully not at the gym, landed my face into a dresser though lol

you think maybe it's a breathing issue? never hold breath when doing reps

Seems about right! My blood pressure seems to be low 100s over 50s alot too. I was yawning a lot too before I fainted. =\

and I never hold my breath during reps! I want to but i try to breathe through the strain.
  • Happened to me twice but that is after i haven't done training in a long time. Now if the symptom of blacking out occurs i would just stop for at least 20 minutes before i go on with the training.

Yes, I've passed out a number of times from UTI's and kidney infections. Once it happened as I was signing out of the hospital and they made me stay for IV antibiotics.

i suffer from reactive hypoglycemia ....so when i work out I drink a lot of water, eat a snack...cheese and apple or something small or if I feel funny I carry quick sugar like jelly beans or a lollipop. The minute you feel light headed i would stop whatever you are doing (buy a glucose monitor and check your sugar) and grab a packet of sugar or a piece of candy. If your sugar is low you need to EAT real food not just the candy!! do not continue your workout until after you have eatin.....I suffer often but have learned my warning signs!! Best of luck and good health always

All the women in my family suffer from low BP, anaemia and frequent bouts of low blood sugar, so we faint frequently. I can't do burpees because my BP cannot cope with movement, and I have to keep an eye on both my iron intake and sugar. I even have to carry around honey or barley sugars in case my blood sugar level drops, or I will faint (especially if I'm working out). I'd ask to get your iron levels and BP checked out, as combining these issues can be very problematic.

i had an anorexic friend who was in the habit of fainting at the gym.

Um... the trainer isn't going to assume you're yawning from low blood sugar till you keel over. Prior to that he might think you had a late night.

I've had many UTI's and never once fainted but if that's what your doctor thinks I guess he knows better than I do. How you would have one without knowing is beyond me, when I get them they hurt like hell.

With 430 cals inside you already that day, I don't see you fainting from hunger though.
    A blood pressure spike?
    Are you eating enough salt?

Though doctors have qualifications - not all of them are good, and there are many people who know just as much, if not more than a Dr. and are actually not doctors at all. Never assume your doctor knows all about everything - because a lot of the time, they don't.
(Not discrediting OP's dr specifically, I am speaking of doctors in general).

If I didn't feel like passing out, I wasn't working out hard enough. hee, hee :) Just make sure to eat and drink enough!

And, get some acidophillus, (pro-biotic) for those UTI's and use them every day! Your kidneys will thank you!

    Listen for your doctor.

I think you ought to look for a a new gym and a new trainer. That just is not right.

I got the gym before five. I never eat beforehand because its way too early, and I never have gotten close to fainting. However, before I leave I drink ten ounces of water and I also finish off about 32 ounces during the workout. Make sure you stay hydrated.
  • I hadn't been really drinking nearly as much as I usually do due to the fact that my roommates have been stealing my waters -_-, but i fixed that today! also, the doctor i saw was an urgent care doctor, not my family doctor, i am going to see him monday. I am canceling my training sessions with the trainer and I will work out on my own until I can handle more. Right now though, I have just found out that I have a herniated disc (another one, yay) so I wont be doing anything for a little while.
Thanks everyone for the responses! Everyone was so helpful! Also, about the vasovagel syncope... I was actually diagnosed with that a few years back! I didin't relize it at the time but I was on Midodrine for blood pressure, but it interfered with my anxiety so I stopped taking it. Like I said early, I have made an appointment with my doctor and I will bring up possibly getting back on the bp meds.
