UK members - contraception and weight gain

Hello everyone, just wondered what you're experiences are with the contraceptive injection
Has it made you gain weight and or/ increase your appetite?
I've lost nearly 4 stone the past 9 months and i'd be so upset if I went on the injection and gained weight.

Also any suggestions to which pill would be good to avoid weight gain?
Not really sure which route to take.
Thank you

My experience with the injection is horrible, basically has ruined my life. I didn't put on weight but i was for over a year without a period and after came off it because my libido disappeared, i was for 5 months with two periods a month. My sexual life hasn't been the same since, low libido, dryness etc.....I know now so many more woman with problems from taking this contraceptive....
I am with the pill now and i haven't put on weight.
    I hope this help you.
  • Avoid depo provera imo.
I came off it in Sept 2012 after being on it on and off for four years. I gained 20lbs - the same 20lbs I am now struggling to lose.

I was fine whilst on it and had no weight gain but as soon as i stopped it then my weight spiralled so fast that I am covered in stretch marks even in intimate areas.

i was on Dianette, and had been for a good five years. when i switched off to Implanon, the implant, i gained about two stone (24lbs) in under nine months. Dianette is NOT a long term pill though, so PLEASE don't go to your GP and ask for it as permanent contraception!

whilst i have been/am on the pill, my weight is easy to control. i'm on a very strong pill due to acne troubles. when i was on the implant, i could NOT STOP EATING at all. and it was always cravings for junk! that might have been because i had my period nearly constantly but still, not fun!

i would recommend you talk to your GP. weight gain / appetite control is not listed as an official side effect of any contraceptive, and everyone's body reacts differently to hormones!

Not a UK member, but thought I'd throw this in anyway since I JUST talked to my OBGYN about this the other day. I was considering contraceptive treatment for terrible cramps and she went through every option and the side effects with me. She told me the only one (out of the shot, pill, ring, patch, IUD) that had a real, noted, potential for weight gain as a side effect was the the shot--so we immediately nixed that one. I don't know if yours are a different makeup over there, but she told me the weight gain effect was due to the types of hormones that it consisted of (which are different than the other options, I guess.)

Went with the pill. No problem so far, but I really watch what I eat, since I have had weight gain in the past with it when I was much less health-conscious. Can't say if it was me or the hormones.

well, I've never known anyone who lost weight on it. not on any, in fact. they can make a drug to get a willy up, but can't really focus on a bc for women that doesn't make them gain weight. or have an orgasm.

I was on Yas (pill) for years and never had an issue with weight gain or loss. I just got a copper IUD yesterday, though, because I wanted to stop artificial hormones. It was unpleasant getting it inserted, but it'll be worth it not to have anything messing with me hormonally.

Oh, Depo was horrible. I was only on it for about 6 months. I gained nearly a stone and I was spotting continuously for the whole 6 months. I was always tired and grumpy too. My side effects when I stopped it wasn't quite as bad as other women seem to have experienced. My spotting finally stopped (thank goodness), but I gained a further 3-4 pounds and had horrible pain and tightness in my muscles and felt exhausted for about a month after.

Never will I go back on it again. Oh no! lol

    Hi there,
Tried Lo estrin 20 for about 6 months. Gained 7lbs and water retention was horrible.
I switched to an IUD (copper) and highly recommend it. No hormones messing with your mood/appetite/energy levels.I'm not nearly as weepy or irritable now.
The insertion procedure was not nearly as bad as anticipated, but talk to you GP or nurse if it would be suitable for you.
    Good luck!
