what bc pill have you NOT gained weight on ?

My daughter has bad acne, her dr put her on bc pills, she gained 15lbs over one summer, went off of them, lost the weight, her face is all broke out again, we need to find a good one to try that won't pack on the lbs. She's a freshman in college, I assured her, with all the walking she does now, (vs. Being very inactive before) she would be fine, but she's still scared. Any suggestions MFPs ?

BC is a very individual thing. I love being on Depo and actually lost weight on it. Others will tell you they gained 40 lbs on it. Sadly, it might just be trial and error. It took me a while to find the birth control that was right for me.

I'm in a similar boat. I'd recommend just calling up for a consultation with a doctor to see what other options might be available to her. It's pretty dependent on each individual body, so it's kind of just a trial and error unfortunately

It all depends on the person. I gained weight from Ortho Evra but not Seasonique. The only reason I went on Ortho Evra was because I read reviews that said it didn't make people gain weight. Lesson learned.

It's not the pill, it's your daughter's reaction to said pill. This is a conversation to have with a doctor, not a message board because everyone reacts differently to different hormone combinations. Personally, I've been on over 10 kinds of hormonal BC trying to control my PMDD, and none of them have caused noticeable weight gain.

The Nuvaring is more local (the absorption), so that might help with side effects if her doc OKs it.

I used that for a long time. The only one that made me gain, though, was that awful Depo shot. I hated it.

Never gained weight from any I have tried. I think it is the side effect of being more tired and increased appetite rather than the actual pill itself.
  • I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen, Nuvaring, Lutera, and Lo lo Estrin. I have not gained weight because of them. I gained weight because I would stuff my face when I wasn't even hungry.

i'm not on any right now but i was on yaz. i wouldnt recommend it though because there are serious side effects. if it's hormonal acne i would ask your derm about "spironolactone," it's the isolated medicine that's in a lot of birth control pills and what makes the acne clear up. i've been on it for two months and it's great.

I never gained weight because of any BC pill. I gained while on the pill at one time, but not because of it. And I lost weight no problem. I was on several different name brand and generic pills over the years.

I gained a ton of weight on Mirena and even a year after having it removed, I can't lose that weight. Other women have no such problem.

My best friend lost weight on the shot and couldn't gain no matter what, while other women gain a lot of weight on it and can't lose.

You need to have this discussion with your daughter's doctor because the experiences of random strangers really aren't going to be helpful.

    I agree with this post!

One advantage of the Nuva Ring is the hormone does not have to go though the stomach. It actually has to go through the system very little. I know many women that have had success with the Nuva Ring.

Personally, I have been on it for almost 8 years now.

I gained weight on Yaz (which I guess is evil anyway) and Depo shots.
I did not gain any weight on Ortho Tricyclen-Lo but that was also 15 years ago so who knows.

Good luck to your daughter. I personally think birth control pills are extremely dangerous and a very bad idea. Way too many hidden risks associated. I think many forms are an example of medicine just being thrust out into public use way before it's truly safe.

When I first started the pill I went low-hormone (Tri-Cyclen Lo) for this very reason, however I put on 10-15lbs in that time. I'm not 100% blaming the pill for this as I was basically finishing puberty when I started and also started working and eating a bit poorly. Some say that the pill does cause cravings though, like a milder version of pregnancy cravings since your body is tricked into thinking it's pregnant, but I'm not calling that a fact.
When my TCL started making me spot like mad after 2 years (I guess your body just decides one day what it doesn't want), I switched to Yasmin (NOT Yaz, which I've heard nothing good about) which I've loved and hasn't inhibit my ability to lose weight too much (like TCL seemed to; I swear I was dieting for 10 women).

TLDR; Yasmin did not make me gain weight.

ETA: On an unrelated note, I'd avoid Alesse. I know she's not using it for BC specifically but I've known several women to get pregnant on Alesse so if she continues to use it for years to come (like I ended up) then this is something I'm gonna call, uh, important.

While I agree that this is between your daughter and her doctor and everyone reacts differently, I have been on Zovia since April. My doctor recommended it because it has been around for awhile. He also said if he were a dermatologist her would recommend it and it has definitely helped cut back on any breakouts on my face. I never had bad acne, but would just get 1-3 spots at a time. Now I only breakout if I don't wash my face soon enough after working out.

I've never gained weight from the pill either and I will add that I'm currently taking Seasonale and it's fabulous.

See, I was on Yaz for years and loved it, until it got too expensive. No cramps, easy periods, minimal mood swings (I have PMDD so the mood swings were not from the pill). Just goes to show everyone is different.

And as far as Alesse, unless there is actual evidence showing it is less effective, I wouldn't put too much stock in anecdotal evidence of "I know people who have gotten pregnant on it". The pill isn't 100% effective even when used correctly, and most women don't use it correctly (myself often included).

When I was on ortho-tricyclen, I didn't gain weight. But my activity level was high. The Nuva Ring made me gain weight very quickly though.

I've been on several pills, and none have caused weight gain. Yas was the last one I was on, and it also really helped clear my skin.

When I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen...I lost 75 lbs.

Currently on Seasonique...have lost 55 lbs.

But that's just my anecdotal experience...

Maybe there's scientifc proof out there that proves that BCP cause weight gain, but that has never been my experience. I gained weight because I ate too much and moved too little.

On the mini pill now (progestin only) and no weight gain. None of my previous bc pills caused weight gain either. I agree it was the excessive eating that caused any weight gain while on (or off) the pill.

Yeah I think it's person to person. I've never reacted in any way to BC. No weight gain, mood changes, nothing.
I have a friend though who is basically psychotic on BC. She's *****y, moody, gains weight, I want to punch her.

So... What the others said; talk to the doctor about it :)

Has she tried other methods of getting her acne cleared up? It could be a food sensitivity that is causing the flare ups. My stepson had terrible acne that didn't respond to medication. We cut back on the HFCS (and sugar in general) and his skin cleared up noticeably. Obviously, he wasn't going to be put on hormonal birth control, but I had my doubts about the effects of antibiotics on the long term control of acne.

Definitely talk with her doctor about other options. Obviously, if she is trying to prevent pregnancy, birth control is going to be necessary. But if this isn't a concern for her, maybe a more natural solution may be available.

Yep...even Depo Provera (shots) are not 100% when used correctly.

I am on Seasonique to help control peri-menopausal symptoms. As a woman in my mid-40s, it would really suck to put on weight because of that. I have been overweight for the last 15 years, but none of it was due to the bc. Good luck!

I have been on many pills, but none of them really made me gain weight (they do give me more cravings, I have noticed they go down when I take the week off). I have had a LOT of side effects other than that though, from yeast infections to insane emotions to non stop bleeding, all of which I would place as worse than gaining 15lbs. Maybe it's because I have been on other medications that did a whole lot more than BC to make me ravenous.

Google for low estrogen pills such as Loestrin. Then bring the list to a health professional and go over, to determine if any of these are good fit in combination with acne problems. This would be my suggestion

Necon ..ive lost weight since on it..I don't think the pill has any impact on my weight it may increase appetite but I just have to fight it..
  • It's not a bc pill, but my daughter (junior in college) and I have had great success with Mirena. It's very, very low hormones and lasts for 5 years. In the past, I had always gained with bc pills.
