I know this is going to sound strange- but I'm almost positive I have an intolerance to bananas. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this or has it?

Yes, absolutely. Banana allergies do happen.
In fact, you may want to be somewhat cautious of latex as well and bring this up with your doctor. Supposedly allergies to latex and banana are closely related, and there's a risk that if you have one you also have (or will develop) the other.
Latex allergies are a big deal because they can be dangerous, and because of things like latex gloves that are sometimes used in the medical profession. You don't want someone handling you with latex gloves if you're allergic to it.0 -
I have heard of it. My son couldn't eat bananas until he was about 2 years old - not an allergy as such, but he would get terribly constipated and be up screaming all night. My daughter also had issues with bananas; they would flare up her reflux as a baby. Both of them are fine with bananas now.
Be aware that banana allergy can also be linked to avocado and latex allergies.0 -
Kiwi is in that grouping too.0
-
Yes...I am allergic to bananas0
-
Banana's, latex, kiwi, passion fruit, avocado, chestnut, melon, tomato and celery all have similar cross reactive proteins so if you do in fact have an allergy proceed with caution.
I have an allergy to the protein in bananas if they are too close to the green stage, but if they are really ripe I do not react, I also have severe reactions to latex, kiwi and chestnuts but no reaction to avocado, melon tomato and celery, go figure.0 -
I can't eat them raw. When I do I get awful stomach cramps for about an hour. Writhing in pain. Ugh.
So... I eat banana bread to ease my woes..0 -
My daughter used to eat bananas, but now, they give her a horrible stomach ache. I thought it was weird, since she ate them since she was a baby(she's 13 now). She won't go near the raw ones. Banana bread and banana chips don't affect her, though. Wonder if something is destroyed in the cooking/drying process? I'll look into the latex, and kiwi allergy. Good to know ahead of time! Thanks!0

Actually I never heard of anyone who had an allergy to bananas until my aunt discovered she was. So I guess it sounds strange, but it happens. My sis has the oddest allergy too... She is allergic to horses! She puffs up like a red tomato! At least we know she's allergic now!:D0
-
Hmm well I'll definitely check in with my doctor and ask about possibly having other allergies like latex. Thanks everybody!0

Just a side note on this blog. I love that you guys call Kiwifriut, Kiwis heehehehe. Just be very careful of calling this fruit "Kiwi" if you are ever in my part of the world. People might think you want to eat our endangered national bird lol0
-
It's absolutely possible. I would ask, though, how do you handle other sugary foods? Having a digestive system that protests to sugary things in general is also not that uncommon....0
-
Haha- I definitely don't want to eat an endangered bird.
Well I've actually been cutting back on sugar for the past 6 weeks, but I've been eating a little bit lately without having adverse side effects. Today, however, I had pineapple and it reacted the same way as eating a banana I'm making a doctor's appt soon so hopefully they can confirm whatever I have and possibly test to see what else I can't eat without getting severely sick.
So far latex, tomatoes, celery, apples and strawberries are safe (from the trial and error method). Bananas and pineapple are not.0 -
Banana's and Pineapple's are from the same family, I was told that I should avoid pineapple since I have an allergy to Banana's. So not surprising you are reacting to both of them.0
-
I think I do - as whenever I have eaten them in the past I get really really bad stomach pains and quite often throw up. I am Ceoliac and so my tummy is quite sensitive and I figured that since bananas are hard to break down it may just be my tummy isn't cut out to digest them.
Luckily they were never exactly my favourite fruit!0 -
bananas are one of the most over rated foods out there. If you can't eat them because of an allergy or think they taste bad, dont think twice about it.0
-
My mom's allergic to bananas - she gets hives, her throat swells up, all the usual allergy stuff.
Honestly... you could have an allergy to any and everything nowadays, lol.... nothing surprises me anymore.0 -
Poor thing, I love bananas they are one of my favorite healthy snacks. Definately get it checked. I think any allergy, especially food allergies, really suck.0

This is me, exactly - I never had a problem with them until about 6 months after I had my son. So annoying, I love bananas! But I'm very happy I can still eat banana bread!0 -

why "poor thing"? it aint no big deal to be allergic to something. feeling sorry for ourselves because of a stupid allergy only makes it worse.0 -
I just wanted to throw this out there... it is possible that it's a reaction to the high amounts of potassium in a banana. That causes the same stomach cramping type symptoms.
I would definitely check with your doctor to rule things out. Allergies are no fun0 -

No joke!!! I'm allergic to pineapple (my favorite fresh fruit!) and latex, but I don't have a reaction to bananas that I know of, I honestly don't eat them often enough or don't pay attention enough (sick all the time anyway) to tell.
My aunt is allergic to them, she is allergic to most things though
My weirdest allergies that I get all kinds of funny looks for are lavender and Aloe Vera!0 -

Like others on the board tonight, I also have a sensitivity to bananas that are not ripe enough ((plenty brown!). My mother would complain of them hurting her stomach, (unless baked in bread) and as I have gotten older, have the same reaction....although I can eat them raw - if overly ripe. When I was allergy-tested some years ago, I mentioned this issue - and did indeed have a sensitivity. I have other weird issues too...love fresh apples and apple juice, but they cause almost immediate pain - and a bowel cleansing (can eat them baked or cooked in sauce - no problems). Again, the testing I had done - showed a sensitivity. I recommend testing - if something makes you violently ill, or if a SO suspects it might be in your head!0 -
I developed a pretty bad intolerance to bananas 3 years ago. Like, I could not eat anything for the remainder of the day if I had a banana. It was most likely because I had a stomach infection that made my gut inflamed (yeast related). I avoided raw bananas for 3 years but could eat cooked banana in something like pudding or bread once in a while.
It got a lot better after I gave up most fruit for a while (the infection) although I still ate a few servings of sugary food a day. I actually have been dying to try eating a banana again, and I just ate one without horrible pain..so it might go away for you if you heal a stomach problem if you have one.
On a related note, I actually had a less severe allergy to bananas for a short period of time 10 years ago despite having eaten bananas since I was a baby (go figure). At that time I just had bad stomach pain but could eat after a couple hours. It is funny it developed at the same time the other blogger stated her family member's developed--around age 14 for me. At that age I actually put myself on a very low fat diet and just ate margarine on bread and vegetable oils on salad and low fat meat... it seemed to go away after I started eating more cheese--so if you don't have enough healthy fats in your diet that make your enzymes to digest food that might do it too.0 -
my friend at school was very allergic to them, like she couldnt even touch one! but then it just kinda went away0

Can't it just suck to be allergic to something that you enjoy?0 -
banana allergic here, too :ohwell:0

For what it's worth, it might not be specifically the bananas--it might be Oral Allergy Syndrome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_allergy_syndrome
Basically, you might be reacting to pollen that gets mixed up with the fruit when it's growing. I always thought I was allergic to bananas because the inside of my mouth would feel all scratched up/sore after eating them. I occasionally experience the same symptoms after eating melon and finally got around to looking fruit allergies up online. It turns out that the reaction I have to melons sometimes falls under the same category as bananas in regards to OAS--I'm allergic to ragweed.0 -

I don't like peaches at all, but I would never be so rude as to tell someone who loved peaches and found out he or she could never eat them again that it's no big deal.0 -

Oh, I would cry if I were allergic to most of those foods
It's scary how the occurrence of allergies seems to be increasing as the years go by... The news had a segment on how everyone should have on hand and know how and when to operate an epi-pen.0 -
Google Oral Allergy Syndrome. That is what I have and I can't eat most fruit... and it sucks...  :sad:0
