Hello!
My name is Carly, and I'm 23 yrs old.
So I've never really done this before, as in forums or things, but I this time I will really need support! :flowerforyou:
I've always been a bit rounder than I should be, and have a big history of family obesity, and now I find myself at 76 kg; which is the heaviest I've ever gotten to.
Yesterday I went to an endocrine thinking that she could help me go back to a healthy weight, and well all I got was a smug look and some papers she had laying around, with the typical eat healthy advice. She told me I had a 29 BMI and shouldn't worry 'cause I only stand at the boarderline of obesity, to start worrying when I get to a BMI of 30 or over.
Appart from that, one of the papers she gave me included a 1200 calorie diet, full of cereal, bread, rice, etc... I've been on diets before and I've never been allowed such pleasures.... Did she give me the right one? Can I really loose while following a diet like this?
I don't know if I'll even be able to pull this off, taking I have a terrible sweet tooth! :frown:

You will get a lot of different ideas on here. For me, I do not and I mean - I do not deprive myself of the foods I want. You just find things to replace with. Example - chocolate chip cookies. Look at the fiber one chocolate chip cookie for 90 calories. When I want a real coke - I pour the mini can - 90 calories. I do eat healthy things too. Just saying do not deprive yourself when you get a sweet tooth. Have a wonderful time becoming the new you!0

Welcome! I'm Jessi and like you I'm about 76kgs. (prior to March this year I was 85kgs - not great since I am only 1.63m tall!)
I personally wouldn't do that diet - here's why: its a diet - you may successfully lose some weight but then you will stop the diet and gain it back!
It would be much more sensible to plug your numbers into MFP (with the aim to lose a pound a week) and stick with that number of calories. I eat between 1600 and 2000 calories a day and am able to lose weight - just for some perspective
Yes you can eat bread, cereal and rice (I do) - some kids on here eat pop tarts and pizza daily - the idea being that as long as you eat less than you burn you will lose weight. In saying that, moderation is key - you may want to increase your vege/fruit/fiber/protein/water intake ect.
You can also fit in a sweet treat here and there too!

Thanks! Yeah we are at the same point! Well MFT told me exactly what the doctor told me 1200 cals and burn 550 a day, I think I find this the hardest part. I'm so not a sporty person!

Pick up any cardio exercise that you like.
u can start with brisk walk or jogging.
and count calories.
and u will be fine.0 -
I don't know how much you weigh or how overweight you are because I'm use to looking at LBS but I can say this....
GOOD JOB for not letting your weight get out of control before you start thinking about it and doing something about it.
Your Doctor didn't do you any favors. In today's world of over- processed foods and such a grab and go society... Doc should have at least taken a little time to talk to you about FUELING your body... Giving it the NUTRITION It needs.
You can eat anything and "lose weight" if that is your only goal. BUT, if you want to Lose weight, Gain Energy, Feel Great, Look Great... Stay Healthy... keep disease away... stay active... Well... in that case... it's more about thinking about what is healthy for your body. What is going to move you in the direction of HEALTH and Long Life. I don't need to give you a food list and I bet you know that lots of crackers, chips, cereals, icecream, candies, sodas... are not moving you towards Health.
Any "Diet" that consumes less than you burn will cause you to lose weight. My goal is to lose weight but also move towards HEALTH. Nothing crazy, cutting back slowly the things I know I should, cut out what I can now... and eat healthier. REAL FOOD the way God made it is Healthiest (Fruits, Lots of Veggies, some lean protein).
Good Luck! You can do this...and feel fabulous. Beat that Sweet Tooth... but remember.. ANYTHING IN MODERATION... CONTROLLED Portions can be ok. We didn't get fat overnight by eating a small amount of sweets or breads. Add me as a friend if you'd like to encourage each other!0 -

I did so once and I have to admit it was a great expirience, she got me down to 59 kg! But I didn't stick with healthy eating and boom here I am again lol:embarassed:0 -

I've only been here 10 days but love how it works. If I want more on a particular day, I "earn it" with a workout or some form of Exercise. Every entry I make tells me how much I have left. I can still have an ocasional treat and like how it seems every food is in the lookup. I even hit Dairy Queen after a workout last week and it was in there at 230 cals.
I also went to a nutritionist on the advice of my GP and what she said was 100% on the money but extremely boring and often bland. Now I just increase my less calorie dense foods (baby carrots, cukes, with Hummis or a light dressing/dip) and am eating much better nutritionally.
If you think you can do it, I'm sure you can.
P.S. Don't knock the shakes. I love them. ;-) A breakfast favorite is Fiber1, Raspberries or Blackberries and a Costco Vanilla Premium shake over top. Filling at around 400 cals but it's great.0 -
I don't really like that your doctor said to not worry about it. When you are borderline it means you are close to crossing that line. For you, a matter of 5 pounds (2.2 kg) could put you OVER that line on the BMI scale. At least you had enough sense to NOT heed her advice to not worry about it.
Eat in moderation. You can have bread, rice, etc as long as it is not all the time and you exercise. You have to find out what works for you. Some people cut those out and have great results. Some people cut them out and don't lose a thing. You pretty much have to tinker with what you eat and how much you exercise to see what works.0 -

I don't think it necessary, but it could be a great tool and a good way to start you off if you feel you need the help.
Its like HeatherScott said above, about nutrition. When you fuel your body well you crave so much less junk food. When I don't eat s good lunch (ie some protein) I get the hugest munchies all afternoon BOOM there goes several hundred calories on crackers. I think you also have to pick and change your diet in a way that will stick - you may have been down to 59kgs, but you didn't keep eating that way so it can't have been sustainable... I've had to change the way I eat, but Its something I can stick with now
don't give up cookies! Plan them into your day ie eat better meals during the day veggie wraps, salads, veggies, some carbs and protein (for lunch today I had salmon, rice and veggies - carrots, zucchini, cauliflower and broccoli and some rice) so that later in the day you can have a cookie or two without eating the entire bag (cheese and crackers for me later with some grapes)
I adore carrot cake (and crackers) - but its nice to have some in the fridge and know I can have a bite or two without eating the entire thing uncontrollably0
