I do 70% green leaf vegetables and 30% fruits to give it the sweetness. I am strictly no sugar, I soak dates in coconut water (take out pits), It becomes thick like honey and thats my sugar.I blend in my vitamix different veggies including kale, spinach, zuchini, cumcumber, carrots, scoop of my Protein powder and flaxeseed. For sweetness apart from the dates, i get sweetness from my fruits like mangoes, peach, oranges, nectarine etc

Just an FYI, sugar from dates, fruit and honey is still sugar so to say you are stricktly no sugar is very misleading. Your body basically breaks it down and uses all sugars in the same way. This is a really good post to read to clear up the confusion

natural sugar from fruit is way better than white sugar, so when i say strictly no sugar - i am referring to white sugar as I see some will but in their smoothies or icecream blends to add sweetness to it.. I doubt that the Natural Sugar i get from fruit vs white sugar are the same ( i will read the article)

  • have you thought about just juicing daily, and not doing a fast? i juice for breakfast daily and have a salad with chicken for lunch, fresh fruits for snacks and then a sensible dinner. i've lost 20+lbs since November 2012 and have kept it off...i'm still losing weight too. i only say this because you dont have to do a juice fast to juice...you can just decide to juice for a meal a day and still get the benefit from it. between juicing for breakfast, my lunch, and my snacks i'm getting 13+ servings of fruits and veggies in a day without having to do a 'juice fast'.

Ohhh So i guess sugar is sugar no matter what huh? and There is no such thing like healthy sugar whether its white processed or its from fruits. This is like catch 22. Nonetheless, I now prefer the natural sugar from my fruits like dates or orange juice and NOT the grocery store packaged white processed sugar.

Just wanted to correct a misconception posted in this thread that juicers throw fiber away. Juicing will remove the insoluble fiber from food but it will leave the soluble fiber intact. Soluble fiber is associated with lowering LDL cholesterol while insoluble fiber is the roughage that can help maintain gut health.

If you're someone like myself who has gastroparesis, lowering fiber isn't necessarily negative as it can cause digestive complications. While American guidelines (2005) set women's recommended fiber intake around 25g per day, my goal is 15g.

My recommendation, if you decide to incorporate juicing, is to know your target goals for things like fiber and protein, things you're more likely to be lacking while juicing, set them in your custom goals on MFP, show them in your daily targets and then make sure you're hitting them or at least coming close. I also second fitOsaurus' recommendation of one juice and then healthy balance meals the rest of the day. I tried the juice fast as well, and I found the juice + meals moderation much more sustainable, satisfying and healthy (not to mention less expensive). In fact, after cutting out wheat recently (low-FODMAP for IBS-A), I'm don't feel the need to use juices to manage my GP symptoms as much! Still should probably get one in for the veggies since I can't eat the bastages raw and I haven't gotten to the point of being organized enough to bring 'nukable ones to work.

Actually it's nothing like a catch 22. And yes sugar is sugar please read the article.

There is nothing wrong on getting your sugar from fruit and veg, but claiming you are strictly no sugar is nonsense, in fact, depending in the amount of fruits and dates you use you may well consume more sugar than if you just ate a healthy balanced diet of food with a daily juice.

(side eye look) Excuse me???? Don't call what I said as NONSENSE, this is not a forum to be using such rude words, its not necessary. So i said strictly no sugar, Okay i rephrase, STRICTLY NO WHITE SUGAR is what i meant, whats the big deal.

You have an opinion or a suggestion you state it and be done with it, but to refer to it as NONSENSe is RUDE in my opinion- choose your words right and show some respect. What works for one may not work for another. I read the article, like the so many other articles so called experts have written and honestly i am tired of reading them - blah blah blah, we have heard it all what else is new. One day this is good for you, the next day that is not good for you. Damn if you do, damn if you dont.

Like everybody else on this forum, I have started a healthy life style and I may not know it all and all I am saying is I still prefer my 4 dates and a peach or strawberry in my daily diet done many grams of white sugar. I am doing what works for me and thats all there is to it.

Do whatever works for YOU - I will do what works for ME: JUICING VS BLENDING, WHITE SUGAR VS SUGAR FROM FRUITS. To each his own. It is nonsense to assume a no sugar diet while eating sugar. If any of the 'experts' deny sugar that comes straight from a natural source (fruits and veggies) is any less than sugar from the spoon, then that expert should not be listened to for anything.

By the way, someone calling a statement nonsense does not equate to them being rude or calling someone stupid.

    Wow

    ^this

Full disclosure: I own a Vitamix...have for ~15 years...and absolutely love it...probably because I use it for making smoothies and not for meal replacement. Some day, I may have jaw surgery and need to drink my meals, but until then, no thanks. I'll just keep eating an appropriate amount of actual food.

OP, best of luck to you in your 7, 10, or 30 days of an interesting self-experiment...(and then even more luck to you on the other side of it as you presumably begin a healthy approach to eating).

Yes, I am doing one now. I was inspired by the movie "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". I recommend doing what I did. For a week prior to the offical start of the fast I juiced for two meals (Breakfast and Lunch) then ate alot of raw foods for dinner ie) varieties of salads. I did this the make the withdraw minimum when I did juice 100%. I lost weight just doing this and when I did start the fast I felt fine. Including the I've lost 7 pounds in 10 days! I've done this in the past and averaged a pound a day however you can't think once you are off the fast you can eat like you did in the past. I made that mistake and gained back the weight. First you have to ease your body back eating whole foods just like you need to ease yourself into the fast. Then slowly start adding different food to your regular diet ans see how you body handles it. Basically if you for example, come directly off the fast to eat that Thanksgiving meal your going to end up in the hospital. Hope this helps! And good luck!!

Mmm Aliza's post made me realize I mentioned that I'd done a juice fast but never gave the results. Completely agree that it is a jumpstart to a lifestyle change of healthier eating and not a quick fix to then resume what you were doing before (assuming you weren't eating healthily before). Have your markers for "am I healthy while on my juice fast?" and remember that if you do it for more than a few days then you have to use soups and the like to work your way back to "real" food at the end. I saw my doctor while on my juice fast and got his [albeit skeptical] approval after I assured him it was predominantly veggie juice.

I think I lost about 10 or so pounds over my 14 days on a juice fast. Might have been slightly more. I probably regained a couple pounds just from putting solid food back in my stomach, but since I continued eating at a deficit, I didn't regain that weight and have lost even more since. It helped to break me of a 2 - 4 soda a day habit (replaced by coconut water and my filtered water bottle). I still have treats now and then and days when I go over target, but it was a turning point. It also helped me to realize that HFCS has an addictive hold on me and the only way to deal with it is to not feed the addiction. You laugh, but I think about it... even now... Anyway, if you want more info on my experience, check out:

Whatever you decide on... be healthy. :D

Edit: Oh, and in case you want the TL:DR of my Rebooting conclusion post.... at the end I decided that the best thing about juicing was its potential to help people with disorders like gastroparesis and a more balanced approach of juices supplementing real meals was more sustainable and healthier. ;)

You could save everyone in here some time if you would post a list of those individuals so everyone else can ignore them too. I often struggle to differentiate between "self-proclaimed experts who do not know how to communicate" and "people who disagree with my erroneous assertions and who express themselves using a tone of which I do not approve".

    Thanks in advance.
