Muscle Recovery

So, I was always told that the best time to have protein is after a workout because it helps recover your muscles. But yesterday while shopping for protein the "nutritionist" who was also very muscular (so i am inclined to believe he knows a thing or two about muscle training) said:::
"the best thing is Iso to drink while working out but only bodybuilders and people who don't know any better drink that because it acts quick and is gone."
The best thing to eat after a workout is things like dark chocolate or whey/animal protein to help "recover"
So this got me thinking what are some foods/supplements you take pre and post workout and what is your go to food when you are low on protein?
here are some articles I found on the above information:

essentially, if you get enough protein daily, then timing will not be an issue at all. The "window" for getting protein after your workout is more like 24-48 hours. But if you are getting enough daily, or had some earlier in the day before you worked out then doesn't matter0

Me personally, I have my protein with carb combo before my workout and then more protein with carb after my workout. Protein drinks will be good before and after, though after is when you're muscle will need it the most. Chocolate milk will do the work. There's a brand called Darigold, their Chocolate Refuel 2:1 carb/protein ratio is good, 20g protein. Try it.0

I played soccer and coached some soccer. And, for athletes like that, they say that exercise depletes your muscle glycogen stores, and that if you consume something right after exercise it replenishes they and helps them recover better for the next day's workout. The key is that you have to consume something within a window of about 45 minutes because after that amount of time your insulin kicks in and, because of it, your muscles are no longer able to take up what you consume.
they have worked out the optimal ratio of carbs to protein and it turns out that . . . while they sell fancy, expensive, protein drinks, like Tiger's Milk . . . the perfect ratio is in regular, old, chocolate milk.
Try it. You don't need much, and since it is sweet it is not hard to drink just after exercise, when you might not be real hungry.0
